This document provides questions to guide the analysis of magazine contents pages for a school assignment. Students are asked to analyze a contents page from a magazine related to their front cover analysis, comparing it to another contents page. They should examine the use of images, colors, fonts, information organization, promotional features, logo placement, and any franchise promotions. They are also asked to compare this contents page to one from a magazine aimed at an older, more sophisticated audience, describing the layout and how it differs.

2. Questions for content’s
page analysis

For section A you should analyse a magazine contents page that
relates to one of your front cover analysis e.g. NME cover and
contents page and compare it to one other content’s page.
Does the magazine use images? How have these images been
constructed? How do they support your initial findings about the
style of the magazine and its intended audience?

What colours and fonts are used? Does this support the style of the
front cover?

How is the information organised so that it is accessible to the
audience? What are the different sections? What does this tell you
about the magazine?

Are there any promotional features?
•
Is the magazine logo placed anywhere on the page? How dominant
is it?
•
Does the brand have any other franchises? Are these promoted on
the contents page?
For section B you should compare this magazine contents page to
another contents page. For example, Clash magazine is a bi-monthly
magazine which is aimed at 18-26 year old city slickers who enjoy
live alternative music from a range of genre (e.g. rock, dance, hiphop). How does this magazine, aimed at an older more
sophisticated audience compare with Kerrang or NME?!
How would you describe the layout of the contents page? Does it
remind you of anything? What does this say about the audience?
How is this different to another content’s page?
