La Mesa Dam
History of
La Mesa Dam
LA MESA DAM WAS constructed in 1929 during
the United States administration of the Philippines
Sometime between 1920 and 1926, the Metropolitan
Water District decided to build a replacement for
the old Wawa Dam in Montalban, Rizal
It was built in Novaliches, which was then still
part of the Municipality of Caloocan due to the
sloping topography of the watershed area from
Bulacan.
La Mesa Dam turns 90 years old this year, it
becomes the oldest among the three dams
comprising the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa water system.
The La Mesa dam later became part of a larger dam
s y s t e m w i t h t h e o p e n i n g o f t h e I p o
Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan in 1936, the Angat
Dam in the same locale in 1967. The three dams
formed part of the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa water
system.
The La Mesa Dam was raised in 1959 to increase the
reservoir's maximum capacity to its current level.

both Angat Dam and Ipo Dam are at normal
levels. Only La Mesa Dam was experiencing
the critical water level.

it was not pushed through because the
kaliwa dam will destroy 291 hectares of
the sierra madre

Rehabilitation of the deteriorated section of Aqueduct No. 5.
Once commissioned, the project will allow more efficient
conveyance of raw water from Angat Dam to the La Mesa Dam
and Balara water treatment plants.
An estimated 394 million liters per day (MLD) of water lost
daily due to leakages will be recovered which can be used to
augment supply for improved water availability and for
expansion areas in Rizal and Cavite Provinces.
The project is a critical component of Metropolitan
Waterworks & Sewerage System's (MWSS) Water Security
Legacy Program (WSLP) that aims to ensure adequate and
uninterrupted water supply for Mega Metro Manila.
Project objective
The project is a concrete manifestation of MWSS's
firm commitment to ensure water supply security to
Metro Manila. As such, its primary goal is to
safeguard the integrity of raw water conveyance
from Ipo Dam to the La Mesa portals.
beneficiaries
Once completed, the project is expected to serve the needs
of an additional 6 million people. By the first quarter of 2013,
AQ-6 is envisioned to drastically reduce the risk of water
shortage, 50% of its total output being intended for Metro
Manila.
Additional beneficiaries are the people of Caloocan City and
San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan. The project is expected to
spur development and ensure continuous supply of water in
these areas.

LA MESA DAM WAS constructed in 1929 during the United States administration of the Philippines Sometime between 1920 and 1926, the Metropolitan Water District decided to build a replacement for the old Wawa Dam in Montalban, Rizal It was built in Novaliches, which was then still part of the Municipality of Caloocan due to the sloping topography of the watershed area from Bulacan.
  • 5. La Mesa Dam turns 90 years old this year, it becomes the oldest among the three dams comprising the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa water system. The La Mesa dam later became part of a larger dam s y s t e m w i t h t h e o p e n i n g o f t h e I p o Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan in 1936, the Angat Dam in the same locale in 1967. The three dams formed part of the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa water system. The La Mesa Dam was raised in 1959 to increase the reservoir's maximum capacity to its current level.

(1780 MILLION CU.FT.) storage capacity equivalent to 19 days of Manila Water’s supply requirements Its reservoir occupies an area of 27 sq. km. (10 sq.mi.)   • 16. If it was El Nino, then all of our water reservoirs would dry up as well. However, both Angat Dam and Ipo Dam are at normal levels. Only La Mesa Dam was experiencing the critical water level. Construction of kaliwa dam to avoid recurrence of water shortage supply. But it was not pushed through because the kaliwa dam will destroy 291 hectares of the sierra madre

  • 18. Rehabilitation of the deteriorated section of Aqueduct No. 5. Once commissioned, the project will allow more efficient conveyance of raw water from Angat Dam to the La Mesa Dam and Balara water treatment plants. An estimated 394 million liters per day (MLD) of water lost daily due to leakages will be recovered which can be used to augment supply for improved water availability and for expansion areas in Rizal and Cavite Provinces. The project is a critical component of Metropolitan Waterworks & Sewerage System's (MWSS) Water Security Legacy Program (WSLP) that aims to ensure adequate and uninterrupted water supply for Mega Metro Manila.
  • 19. Project objective The project is a concrete manifestation of MWSS's firm commitment to ensure water supply security to Metro Manila. As such, its primary goal is to safeguard the integrity of raw water conveyance from Ipo Dam to the La Mesa portals.
  • 20. beneficiaries Once completed, the project is expected to serve the needs of an additional 6 million people. By the first quarter of 2013, AQ-6 is envisioned to drastically reduce the risk of water shortage, 50% of its total output being intended for Metro Manila. Additional beneficiaries are the people of Caloocan City and San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan. The project is expected to spur development and ensure continuous supply of water in these areas.
