1. Dear Kate Harwood
After listening to what you thought on about youth drama, and
what a younger audience wants to watch, I agree with you.
Of cause younger audience don’t watch as much drama as older
ones, most people around my age spend more time on the
internet, which we can use to watch programs and keep up to
date.
I enjoy most programs shown on the BBC, you mentioned that
BBC three is aimed at a younger audience, I enjoy some of the
programs shown on BBC three, but BBC 1and BBC 2 still attracts
me. BBC three shows programs before being shown on the main
channels, giving them some publicity such as, Gavin and Stacey,
and Torchwood.
You commented on Heroes and Skins, I am a fan of heroes, but
haven’t watch skins. I prefer Heroes over Skins as I find that Skins
stereotype us, I don’t feel that people around my age that I know
are like the characters shown in Skins, so I don’t connect to the
characters personally. I also think Skins attracts an older audience,
as I know much older people watch Skins.
I like Heroes for its characters and story lines, it has a mixture of
ages, with Claire the high school cheerleader, Hiro the comic book
fan, and matt Parkman the policemen. I like the individual story
lines and how it links together. Some of the storylines deal with
family problems, relationship break ups, and being different; Claire
has trouble coming to terms with her healing power, Hiro’s
relationship with his farther, and Matt Parkman’s marriage break
up. This also links to your comment about younger audiences like
and feel comfortable with older characters, and that the two
favourite characters off Eastenders are Stacey and Dot. I do also
prefer Dot I feel she is the more interesting character and
sometimes humorous, I can imagine living next door to her.
I do think younger audiences want good storylines, but not
necessarily want it to centre on they age group. I like watching
youth drama like Heroes and Being Human, but I also like slightly
older drama such as spooks, casualty 1909, and paradox. I think
that producers underestimate what younger audiences want to
watch, that they don’t mind some slightly older programs.
2. I agree with that younger audiences want good stories that go
through the eyes of a younger character e.g. Claire from heroes,
companions in Doctor who, that also younger audiences have a
direct attitude and that we can deal with dark subjects when it’s
told in a different way; being human deals with death, social
alienation, friendships, and relationships with the use of humour
and fantasy horror.
