Pitch
The Break Of Faith
By Crystal Bukenya
Synopsis
The genre I have chosen to do is a Drama/Thriller, as I will be able to incorporate
unexpected fragments within scenes, which will deliver my shock factor. The 5
minute sequence is about a young woman, who is also a writer called Faith, and
meets a young man called Luke as she observes him reading an interesting book.
After he offers her a seat next to him on a bench, they exchange numbers and
begin a relationship.
Messages and values
The sequence will present to the audience both the highs and lows of their
relationship, which unexpectedly turns dark when he begins to abuse her. My aim
was to demonstrate how things can develop over time and circumstances may
change at any point in anyone’s life. This is my way of relating to viewing audiences
as they can think deeper about decisions they make. Furthermore this is my main
intention as a director to, The Break Of Faith.
To accompany this moral of the story, I will incorporate a voiceover from the
beginning of the sequence until the end, which will be the voice of Faith exposing
her thoughts and questioning whether she would remove all of their memories
and make a different decision if she had a choice.
Target audience
My target audience will be both male and females aged 15 to 35. This is
because I do not think the certification 12A or below are ages mature
enough to fully understand the serious themes of abuse that I will input
into my sequence, and they will also not have as big an audience that can
relate to abusive relationships as they are still young to be in serious
commitments. The average age teens tend to begin dating is from aged
16, however most serious relationships begin at the age of 20+. This is
another reason why my target audience will reach up to age 35 as many
grown adults will have experienced a lot of things in their lives up to that
point.
I also believe the drama thriller will interest both genders as it is not a
typical romance film, so men will not feel that it is completely feminine
themed. However, women may be more likely to watch my sequence as
the protagonist is a female victim, and so they may feel more sympathy
towards Faith as she also has a miscarriage at a stage after she is first
abused, which is a sensitive topic for many women.
Character profiles
Name: Faith
Age: 19
Occupation: Faith works
as a coffee lady for a
newspaper company.
She then gets a
promotion as a writer
for the company.
Role: She is the main
protagonist that
becomes abused by
her partner.
Name: Luke
Age: 20
Occupation: Works
in an office selling
new products on the
phone
Role: Faith’s partner
who becomes
violently abusive
towards her
Influences
My drama thriller is inspired by the BBC Three Drama, Murdered by My Boyfriend. This film is about
a girl who meets a guy, in which they also begin to date, which turns into a serious relationship
when they move in together. Within a year the relationship becomes abusive when he hits her
unexpectedly during an argument, however, she takes him back and in result , a few years down the
line he murders her in front of their daughter.
My sequence follows a similar theme in terms of an abusive relationship that is difficult to get away
from, however, the audience are left unaware of whether she does survive, and whether she would
do it all over again just to relive the happy moments. She also questions herself about whether she
would erase the memories she shared with Luke, from the moment they first met, if she had the
choice. This is the main mystery element of the drama thriller, and the storyline that takes an
upside down turn and change in direction when a relationship that seems happy in the start
becomes a worst woman’s nightmare.
