Student X M267 Summary: The Cluster on “Health and the Environment focuses on important ecological stories that are either untold or misrepresented in the mainstream media. Summary: The Cluster on “Iceland, the Power of Peaceful Revolution and the Commons” describes exciting democratic legislation and steps taken against corporate crime in Iceland that get systematically ignored in American media. “Corporate media ignore or manipulate these stories to serve the interest of those in power, often by attempting o sway public opinion in favor of those corporations and their interests.” (Rahman and Valdez-Madera 130) There is a decrease in the world’s food supply that is believed to be linked to the climate changes in the environment. (Rahman and Valdez-Madera 133) “Vandana Shiva and other critics have concluded that Monsanto’s profit-driven policies have led to a “suicide economy” in India.” (Rahman and Valdez-Madera 136) The technological advances in the world are negatively impacting the environment, especially the natural processes that are supposed to occur. (Rahman and Valdez-Madera 139) “At the time, the Economist declared Iceland’s banking collapse “the biggest, relative to the size of an economy, that any country has ever suffered.”” (Roth 145) In Iceland the government wanted everyone to have equal rights in the society; however, the corporate media reported about an election, but ignored the earlier declaration by the country. (Roth 146-148) Creative Commons is a group that has been around for over a decade now and they are a cultural group that wants the community to know a difference between self-interest and false choices. (Roth 150) I think that this quote depicts a common theme scene throughout history and the world. People in power are essentially controlling the media in order to persuade the public to follow and support their decisions. The public for some reason does not seem to realize that this occurring, which startles me. How can someone not tell that there is clearly biased in our media in order to better someone or something else? Many people are not aware at the fact that world’s food supply is decreasing and faster than we may think. Climate change is a huge reason for this issue, but other reasons that involve industry and pollution are affecting not only life on land, but also sea life. I find it odd that the media would not share a topic so important as this one, but I actually understand why they wouldn’t. If they were to share this with the public the public would be scared to death and the issue would be blown out of proportion so I believe some things are better kept a secret. This quote was very compelling to me and it was clearly used here to support more evidence to prove a point of the effects that the Monsanto has on Indian farmers. Many farmers commit suicide because they do not have the sufficient amount of money and are going into debt. Monsanto is a thing w.
