2. Main Lyric themes:
- Self-referential, exude a sense of
cockiness/confidence
- They mainly sing about the difficulty
that comes with becoming successful in
the industry.
- The lyrics also present the bands love
for the music as they talk of feeling it in
“your lungs, heart and even your
capillaries”. Also adding to the positive
vibe of the song.
- When combining these two themes the
audience get a sense of their impending
success, the song seems like a
celebration for the near future.
- As the song is upbeat, we are under the
impression that the band are doing so
to support the idea of them having a
façade of “everything is good” when in
reality they are undergoing struggles of
“mixed abilities”.
- We will play on these elements in our
video.
3. Genre & Conventions
• Indie Rock/Alternative Rock
- We want to play on the indie genre and and twist some of the conventions so
we have an unconventional music video that doesn’t contain a narrative.
However we intend to have some performance in the video which is
conventional to indie rock/alternative rock music videos.
- Traditionally low budget.
- Usually have interesting, fast paced editing. We want to play around with the
editing to create a fun video (slow motion, green screen, different colour filters
etc.)
Camera:
Not a defined rubric for different shot sequences.
Generally contains a mix of shots to keep the audience hooked (wide, close-ups,
panning etc.)
5. Lighting Natural studio lighting
Backlighting/Silhouettes We want our lighting to look natural for most of our shots.
Although, we also want to experiment with chiaroscuro
(light/dark contrast) through silhouettes and we will also
experiment with using coloured gels over our lights to create
different effects and moods.
Essential equipment:
Lighting:
- Interfit Stellar Extreme
- Dedo light kit or similar
- Coloured Gels
- Softboxes for natural
tones
6. Colour
We want our video to maintain the upbeat, light-hearted themes by containing
lots of primary colours.
Visually, its important we don’t overexpose the audience to too much colour in a
single shot as it could become overwhelming and spoil the light-hearted, easy
going nature. To ensure that we don’t do this we will juxtapose the majorly
colourful shots with perhaps a black and white atmosphere with more relaxed
lighting. The Apple commercials inspired us greatly when also thinking about not
only colourful lighting, but also colourful backdrops and backgrounds.
7. Editing
We are leaving room to experiment with our editing, working with different stuff
such as graphic matching of performance scenes, green screen, split screen, slow
motion etc. We will need to leave some extra time to work on our video in post.
• Fast paced, synchronous to the music.
• Compelling, experimental, interesting, unique.
Possibilities for kinetic typography.
We will be using Final Cut Pro X to
edit our music video. We have all
individually used this software before
and all feel confident in operating it.
8. Cast
Both performance cast & for the rest of video.
• Same cast gives relax, feel good vibe.
• We chose our cast with the intent to find
actors who looked like they had character
about them in the hope this would come
across in the video. Adding to the fun,
feel good vibe of the video.
Plus maybe Alfie and Ryan. As well as
perhaps some female cast members –
still to be decided.
9. Costume
• In terms of finding a look that suits our vision
as a relaxed but upbeat music video we
thought that we would just keep it simple. By
having everyone in something like jeans and a
t-shirt (white or coloured) or simple suits, gives
us a neat and easy canvas to work off of. By not
having overpowering and vibrant costumes, it
means that we can experiment more with
lighting, props, special effects, backgrounds etc.
It also keep in compass with inspirations such
as 1950’s fashion and bands like the Arctic
Monkeys and The Specials.
