The Mongol Empire conquered much of Eurasia in the 13th century, posing little threat from Western powers. After the fall of the Mongol empire, the Ottoman Turks rose to power and built an empire that lasted into the 20th century, controlling much of Eastern Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
