1. Ace Coote
Why I have picked this photographerI have picked Ace to look at in specific
detail because I found that he wasnot specifically a close-up/nature photographer like
most other close-up photographers are. I like how he uses macro photography to shoot
objects and then he adds his own unique style to them. I especially was drawn to his
pictures of the wine glasses; I thought these were very effective as they contained
different colours and styles, which made them more interesting. Another reason I
picked Ace was because I discovered that he wasn’t actually a professional
photographer, he just takes images for the fun of it as he states he would hate the
pressure that would come with trying to take photos to earn a living.
This is an image from Coote’s close up portfolio, this fits in with my project as it is
showing the apple in detail and the water splashing on it which is close
up. I like how the background colour is black because this emphasises
the apple and the water more. I also like how he has managed to
capture the apple in mid air, as it looks better the apple being in the
middle rather than the bottom. This is something I would like to try
myself as I think the splash would look very effective in my portfolio.
Coot would have used a macro lens in order to capture this image as he
would have had to caught in quick in order for it not to blur.
This is another image from Coote’sportfolio; this is probably one of
my favourite images from his work as I like the contrasting colours
red and green. I like the fact that he has photographed something as
simple as wine glasses but he has made them look really effective and
interesting, for example he has turned one of the glasses upside down
which has made a reflection along side the other glasses making the
image more appealing. I also like how because the objects are glasses
they have made the background mix about so the green and red look
on different side within the glasses. This is something I would like to
try myself and I think I would be able to do it with the right lighting
and props.
This image is from Coote’s close-up portfolio, now I know it may not
look close-up but its because the angle the image has been taken on
makes it look like its been taken from far away because it’s a bird’s eye
view. I like how the shadow takes up most of the image as this
emphasises the close up. I also like how the image is quite plain yet it
still looks effective. I could easily try to take an image like this misled a
it wouldn’t be too challenging, however I would have to rely on the
natural lighting of the sun in order to get the correct shadow.
2. This is the final picture I have picked from Coote’s portfolio,
again this image is very basic however I still think its
effective and I still like it. I like how he has only captured
the corner part of the image as this makes the photo look
more interesting. I like the fact that you can see the little
amounts of detail such as the rust on the wire. I like the
different colours you can also see as makes the image more
attractive.
How this photographer has influenced me
This photographer has influenced me in a way to try new experiments with objects, for
example my images that I took of the wine glasses were partly inspired by Ace, even
though they are not that similar because I wanted to add my own unique twist to them.
I found his work very inspiring as I found it different to look at, this is because I am used
to seeing macro photographers who have usually take images of nature and wild life,
however I liked the fact that Ace was different and said that he has a passion for taking
images because he was supported by his family. I am know keen to try new ideas which
involve me using the macro lens, for example I would like to try and achieve the splash
effect that Ace did as I think this would look very interesting in my portfolio.
Summary
Originally I really liked Ace’s work as I found it different and I was especially draw to his
work to do with the wine glasses. However after looking further into his work I was
surprised to see that a lot of his work was repetitive, this I found quite boring as I was
expecting new ideas. However this may be because he actually enjoys doing sporting
photography rather than close-up photography. I am however still impressed with his
close-up portfolio as I like how he has managed to capture the fruit in a way that make it
look more appealing, this type of photography could be used in advertising which I
found Ace was considering.
