2. PRELIMINARY TASK
At the beginning of the year, in September, our media teacher
assigned us into create a 60 second sequence in random
allocated groups of 3. We had 30 minutes to plan, film as well as
edit our sequence. Our main use of equipment was also only an
iPad.
However, our task had specific things we had to include when
filming such as: a character moving through a door and across a
room and then sit across someone and talk to each other. With
all this in mind we also had to incorporate things such as the 180
degree rule, include a match on action and a shot reverse shot.
This task proved difficult and tested our abilities and creativity.
3. EDITING
• There was very little editing in m preliminary task as we such a
short space of time and had very little resources in just an iPad
and iMovie.
• However I have made huge strides in editing especially in editing
text. I had some previous experience with Adobe Premiere Pro
when editing my suspense sequence and I learnt how to edit
sound as well as order and time the shots the way you want. But
my main progress was in the use of Adobe After Effects, I spent
most of my editing time using After Effects I learnt how to make
3D titles, motion track the titles so it followed the camera
movement as well as key frame the titles to allow them to
animate. Furthermore I also learnt how to use certain effects to
make the titles come in and out of shot, however I did not
incorporate this in our final piece but in our drafts.
4. CINEMATOGRAPHY
• From our Preliminary task we used mainly basic shots.
However we had some good low angle shots, over the
shoulder shots as well as mid two shots and these were
effective in our piece but overall most of our shots were
of basic quality.
• In the Final piece however, we had much more
opportunities to be creative with our shots as we could
choose our own location. My main progression in terms
of Cinematography was simply camera placement and
shot angles, coming into media in the beginning of the
year I would of not been as creative with different type
of shot angles and would of most likely used basic still
camera shots, but now I am more confident in moving
the camera to follow a character for example, to give
the shot more effect. I have also learnt how to
Incorporate the focus of the camera into our filming
making our shots more technical and advanced.
5. MISS – EN – SCENE
• In regards of miss en scene in our preliminary task we didn’t
have much opportunity to take into account costume, makeup or
location as we were give the school as our main location and we
did not have any resources to use for makeup or costumes.
• In our final piece miss en scene was very important as we our
chosen genre was zombie makeup was a significant factor, I
watched a few tutorials on YouTube on how to use things such as
latex, fake blood and foundation to make zombie looking scars
and I think this was a very successful part of our piece as it gave
our piece more of a scare factor. Our location was also very
important, in our drafts (Outbreak) our main location was
abandoned house that we came across and we thought that this
was perfect for our film as It gave a eery atmosphere to our play.
However in our final piece (Survival Instinct) we decided to use a
suburban household as it made more sense in regards of our
plot and story.
6. CONCLUSION
• In conclusion, since my preliminary task I have made big
strides into many practical areas in media, especially in
editing, cinematography as well as miss en scene. I believe
that my progress is evident in my preliminary task in
comparison to my final piece with my main progress being
in editing.
