1. COMPONENTS OF A LESSON
SKILL:
Specific Skill from VSC
• Skill to be developed such as details, phonetic analysis, fact/opinion, context
clues, main idea, sequence, etc. In Math, Adding one digit numbers, adding
fractions with like denominators etc.
OBJECTIVE:
Specific Instructional Objective from VSC
• The behavior expected after specific instruction
• What observable performance is the student to demonstrate?
• Use verbs when writing objectives such as:
Identify – name – describe – select – list – demonstrate – order – state – label
– write – tell, etc.
MOTIVATION:
Setting the Stage
• Create interest in the skill/topic to be taught involving the students.
• Use concrete or semi-concrete materials when possible. Magic Box, treasure
chest, magic wand, recordings, manipulatives, computer presentations, etc,
can be used as motivator (film clips, poetry, questioning, etc.)
INTRO TO NEW MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE:
Sequential Development of Lesson
• Use more than one activity (method) for teaching the objective.
• Start with concrete moving to abstract.
• Make sure each activity focuses on the objective/skill being developed.
• Charts, overhead projector, taped recordings, games, language master,
flashcards, etc. can be used in developing the skill.
GUIDED PRACTICE
Practice with Teacher Support
• A chance for students to work SOME of the time on their own with slow
hand off of responsibility.
2. • Teacher should monitor and correct individually or the entire class based on
student work
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION
Students Move on Independently or Continue with Support
• The follow-up assignment always provides practice and reinforcement of
the skill taught.
• Students who show good to excellent understanding of the skill move on to
work independently or with more advanced work.
• Students who are still struggling work with teacher for corrective instruction.
SUMMARY/EVALUATION:
Review the Objective
• Summarize with a game or some type of an activity related to the skill (e.g.
exit ticket). The summary should clearly indicate if the students achieved
the objective for the lesson. The evaluation of the lesson results in mastery of
the objective.
