In A Single Shard, Tree–ear has to realize it is time to let go of Crane–man's death if he wants to go
anywhere in life. The text says, "No. Not the same at all. Crane–man was gone,". This short

The three Newberry books I chose to read were, The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman, A Single
Shard by Linda Sue Park, and Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. All three of these books were
appropriate for the age group I desire to teach. That age group consists of ages 11–13 year old's. I
believe that these three books will not only be interesting to children ages 11–13, but fun and
educational as well. In the following, I am going to share a brief synopsis of each book. I will also
include why I selected each book, how I will use them as a teacher and evaluate them as well. The
first book I chose is titled, The Whipping Boy. It is about a young Prince, who ran away from the
royal palace with his whipping boy, who isn't too fond of him. Their running away turned into an
