First of all, there are many problems presented in the scene (IV.i) in which the Duke and Isabella first approach Mariana with their proposition. The
Duke and Isabella walk in on Mariana while she is listening to a love song. When she sees that guests have arrived, she stops the song and says:
"Here comes a man of comfort, whose advice/ Hath often still'd my brawling discontent" (IV.i.8–9). This line appears odd because it sounds almost as if

complex that one wouldn't know where to start when trying to solve them. Though Measure for Measure is categorized as a comedy, some of its
elements lean more toward a tragedy. The closest substitute for a green world is Mistress Overdone's brothel. The tone of the play is dark, and
some of the situations feel like they have no resolve. In a true comedy, Isabella would have a third option that would save her brother and her virtue,

It seems she is right when she speaks with him in III.i.; at first, he tells her that she won't do it. However, he's so desperate that he tells her, "Sweet

all of them. The fate of the brothels in Vienna is unknown, and whether or not Pompey Bum is punished remains a mystery. Though the other
problems are seemingly resolved, some of those resolutions don't provide a sense of closure. The Duke asks Isabella to marry him, but she never
responds; the reader is left to assume that either she declines, or that she agrees and they get married. And even if she does marry him, is that what
she really wants? At the beginning of the play, Isabella was preparing to become a nun; if she marries the Duke, she can never return to the convent.

While the Duke is in a position of authority, he has not been using his authority to enforce the laws prohibiting his citizens from engaging in
prostitution and having sex out of wedlock. The Duke is aware of this when he points out: "We have strict statutes and most biting laws,/ The needful
bits and curbs to headstrong weeds/ Which for this fourteen years we have let slip" (1.3.19–21). In Measure for Measure, sex outside of marriage is

Comparing the characters of Angelo and Isabella, one could argue that Isabella is 'the symbol of goodness and mercy set against a background of
moral decay'. Alternatively, one could see her character as self–righteous and hypocritical, as we later discover when she values her chastity higher than
her brother's life. Isabella continues arguing with Angelo until he finally relents and tells her to come back the next day to hear his judgement.
Everyone leaves, and Angelo speaks a rather striking soliloquy, apparently talking to himself '...what art thou Angelo? Dost thou desire her foully for
