Nazi Oppression Of Sports In The 1936 Summer Olympics
The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany was a key moment whereby African American and
Jews used sports to politically challenge the Nazi ideology of Aryan supremacy and non–Aryan
inferiority. Paul Taylor argues that sports is one of the most powerful weapons in the hands of those
suffering under racial prejudice or political oppression. During the 1936 Olympics, Hitler dialed
down the anti–Semitic propaganda due to international pressures, but in official Nazi sporting hand
books it specifically targeted Jews and African American's as being physically inferior to the Aryan
race as they lacked athletic ability. Also, Nazi theorists like Kurt Munch claimed that Jews and
Blacks were feeble athletes and had never achieved any success in athletics. The creator of the
Olympic games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, believed that the Olympic games encouraged people to
look beyond the interests they had in common by bringing the best athletes from every country,
culture, and race, and giving them a platform where they could earn respect and admiration based on
skill and not race, creed, or nationality. Although, African Americans and Jews did not voice their
political beliefs they used their athletic skill and would have acquired praise from Coubertin because

Díaz Ordaz successfully created a peaceful image of Mexico internationally throughout the Olympic
Games, in reality Mexico's domestic political situation became much more shaky as his
administration lost support throughout many sectors of society after the events in Tlatelolco. The
loss of support was clear after Octavio Paz, Mexico's ambassador to India, resigned in protest of the
government's repressive actions in Tlatelolco. The government's actions as well as Paz's resignation
served as a setback to the legitimacy of the ruling regime. Paz was also an advisor to Ordaz's
administration as he worked closely with the government on the investigation of student movements
throughout Mexico. Paz had always advised the President that rather than use force against the

The Salute Seen Around the World For nearly as long as humans have been around, some form of
athletic competition has also existed. Dating back to the ancient Romans, people would travel from
all around to see their men compete. Since 1894, the International Olympic Committee has
organized the worldwide event we know as the modern Olympic Games. The games have for a long
time been a center point of many protests, revolving around the current events and arguments of the
time. American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos created one of the most iconic and socially
important Olympic protests at the 1968 Summer Games, when they raised their fists up while giving
the Black Panther salute on the podium. A gesture that has been celebrated, criticized, and discussed
to this day.

Before the 1968 Olympics, the world was in chaos. Countries had internal and external problems
that were carried on to the Olympic stage. Issues like the Cold War, South Africa apartheid, and the
Civil Rights movement took part in forming the games and taking the stage. However, the host of
the Olympics, Mexico, was in for a rude awakening. First, they had to prove to the world that they
were capable of hosting the games. Second, they had to handle the worlds issues and their own too.
Mexico's problems consisted of the effect of high altitude on athlete's performance and student
protests. These concerns are all discussed in Kevin Witherspoon's book, Before the Eyes of the
World: Mexico and the 1968 Olympic Games. Witherspoon argues how global and internal disputes
were able to impact Mexico in how they handled the most watched event. Witherspoon organized
his book into six chapters. Within the chapters, he provides different subtitles that correlate with the

At as young as four years old she dealt with double pneumonia and scarlet fever left her with no use
of her left leg. Despite an illness that might have prevented her from even walking, Wilma Rudolph

The article from The Atlantic that I chose, given the Olympics that are currently occurring, is Conor
Friedersdorf's article Peggy Fleming and the 1968 Winter Olympics. In it, Friedersdorf describes
how the United States won its only Gold Medal in Grenoble, by Peggy Fleming finishing first in
figure skating (Friedersdorf). Fleming's performance in the games was striking, as a major reason
why she was there was because her coach died in a plane accident seven years prior, and Fleming

Jessie Owens, who was a famous African American sprinter, fought back against Hitler's racial
stereotypes of Blacks by winning four gold medals and becoming one of the worlds most successful
athletes. Owens challenged Nazi ideology that African Americans were inferior because he used his
skill to win four gold medals, which disproved the idea that African Americans were unsuccessful
athletes. The biggest blow to Nazi ideology about African Americans was that the German crowd
treated Jessie Owens as a hero whereby they chanted and cheered his name whenever he entered the
arena, which was reported to embarrass Hitler. In addition, Andre Kabos who was a Jewish–
Hungarian fencer almost gave up his fencing career due to anti–Jewish propaganda in Hungary and
was pressured by Jewish organizations to boycott the German games. However, Kabos chose to

and used his Jewish pride to strengthen his motivation to beat a German fencer and won a Gold

Mexico City's history contains many different identities experienced by both the people and
government. The city's sheer size poses many challenges when it comes to governing and
representation of each individual. Often, government officials are not elected but appointed to
represent the citizens of Mexico, causing many conflicts of interest (Perlman and Guadarrama 144–
145). Mexico's history is one of constant identity shifts. According to Mexican anthropologist
Guillermo Bonfil Batalla, Mexico has often been in opposition between two groups, those of
"Mesoamerican origin" and those groups with their own visions of "Western civilization" (Batalla
28). Opposing views of national identity contributed to the narrative around modernization in
Mexico City. The view of modernization is one of looking to the future while holding onto the past;
being technologically innovative yet holding on to cultural roots. In the 1960's, Mexico's desire to
become a modern nation in the eyes of the world was therefore a stitching together of standards set
by the rest of the modern world with Mexico's always–present heritage. When Mexico was awarded

Teamwork is an extraordinary characteristic for any organizations or groups to strive to its fullest
potential. According to the Greenberg text "An organization is a structured social system consisting
of groups and individuals working together to meet upon some agreed–upon objectives." In the
movie Miracle, the theme of teamwork is portrayed through the Men's Hockey Team's head coach
Herb Brooks leadership in training recent college graduates to play hockey in one of the most
challenging competition in the world, which were the 1980s Olympics.
The theme of teamwork plays a vital role in this movie because coach Brooks did not want all–star
players during the tryout sessions. He wanted to build a team based on individuals who were
hardworking and loyal to their own team. Even though Brooks faced criticisms from the advisory
hockey board but at the end he succeeded to lead the team by his own means and was given
permission to take the team to the Olympics and towards the dream of getting a gold medal. In the
movie Miracle, there was a splendid portrayal of the team's journey of formation to performance for
the gold medal. According to the Greenberg text, there is a five–stage model of group formation,
which includes: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. In the movie the ice
hockey team goes through the five stage of group formation within six months. The forming stage
