The importance of preventing children from drug usage starts at early ages. Education and school
facilities can only occupy children for 7–8 hours a day. The rest of the afternoon leaves children
vulnerable to negative influences. Most children use after–school programs as a way to stay out of

Due to after school programs receiving public funding, questions arose as to if after school programs
were effective. Effectiveness of after school programs, and funding is now measured by academic
improvement of students who attend after school programs. Data on the effectiveness of after school
programs have conflicting outcomes. Some studies found a significant increase in student's
academics who attended after school programs (Durlak, Weissberg & Pachan 2010; Durlak &,
Weissber, 2007). Others studies showed no significant gains in academic outcomes for students who
attended after school programs (U.S. Department of Education, 2004; Dynarski, 2015). The
methodology of studies on the effectiveness of after school programs has come into question. There
are several types of after school programs, and the attendance of students varies. Some students
attend five days a week, others once a month. Few of these studies factor varying attendance and

I often think about going to school for orthodontics after I graduate from dental school. I decided

Introduction The nonprofit organization that I chose to conduct research on is called the Lighthouse.
The Lighthouse is an after school program for middle and high school students. I decided to
research this organization because I have had a few friends volunteer there and I have heard nothing

During my high school's years, I wondered on a daily basis what I was aiming to after I finished
school. I dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, an archeologist or even a philosopher–certainly, I
didn't have a real idea of what I wanted. During my senior year of high school, all these dreams
were truncated after I was kicked out of my house at the middle of the year. When the time to
choose a career came, I had fewer options due to the lack of economical support from my parents

Take this as an example a student is a player for a football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or any other
sports team and their a starter, but the student stays after school a lot to catch up on work and now

The most significant challenge that I had to overcome was what was I going to do after high school,

One of my hardest decisions was to come to school at Mideast. I almost considered going back to
