C: Hi kuya Gerald!
G: Hi Charmaine, how can I help you?
C: I just finished making my research paper. Can you check if there’s still lacking in it?
G: Sure, can I have the paper?
C: Here it is.
G: Alright…give me a moment to scan this. Hmm, everything’s well construct, Charm. But there’s still
one part that you missed.
C: What was it?
G: You forgot to put citations for your reference.
C: What is citation? Is it important?
G: A citation should contain all the necessary information to identify your source and lead your readers
to it. It’s basically a reference page in your research paper.
C: What will happen if I don’t put a citation?
G: Well, putting citations means that you are giving credit to the ones who actually quote a statement
made the material. If you don’t cite, it means you own the statement and because of that you will be
accused of plagiarism.
C: Oh, now I understand. So how do make a citation?
G: Before you make a citation, you must list down all the quotations, material, websites or article
sources which contain your research. Then, in writing a citation, you must follow a certain format
depending on the kind of sources you have. Among the most commonly used format is the APA style.
C: APA?
G: Yes. It stands for American Psychological Association, Charm. Meanwhile, let’s look at your list of
resources. Where was the first source taken?
C: The statement was taken from a Book “College Psychology”

2. G: Ah, I see. As I was saying earlier, there are varying formats for different kinds of sources. So with the
book as your reference, we need to follow the format: First, write the author/s then the publication date
of the book in parenthesis, next is the title of the book, following the place of publication and ends with
the name of the publisher.
C: Okay, kuya. How about my second source? It was taken from an article in a magazine.
G: For journals, news or magazine articles. We use the format by writing first the Author, the date
published, then the title of the article, followed by the name of journal, volume number, issue number,
and the pages.
C: I see. One more kuya, I have a resource material taken from the Internet. How do it make citation out
of it?
G: It’s simple. Just write the title of the article, the author and the date published then followed by the
URL or the universal resource locator. However, many webpages do not include author information or
the date of publication. If there is no author, the title of the page is listed first, followed by the date, in
parentheses. If there is no date, then use n.d. (no date). Do not include the date the webpage was
visited unless the information is likely to change, as a blog or a wiki.
