In November 2013 Brooklynn (19) released her debut single “State Of the Art”. Her newest single
“Discover” created a massive discussion within the indie scene. We sat down with Brooklynn to see
how she’s coped with finding her talent and making her first live performance last week in
Manchester.
Here’s what she had to say about getting signed:
“Since being signed to Cooking Vinyl my phone literally hasn’t stopped ringing. Phone calls from
festivals, venues, record labels and people wanting to interview me is just so much to take in. I’m so
greatful to have been found by Jake Bugg and on my new up and coming album State of the Art he
even features in one of my tracks.”
Brooklynn is one of the first ever indie artists to be found by another and have a record deal within
the space of just 6 Months.
I then asked her how her first live gig was at the Manchester Academy last week on Tuesday:
“Performing at the Academy last week was fucking insane! I know the venue is only small and holds
only a smaller audience but that’s the type of thing I want to do. The thought of playing at
somewhere big like the Phones 4 U Arena makes me feel like I don’t know, Kind of sick. I like how a
smaller venue allows you to connect with the audience”.Whilst sat in the studio interviewing
Brooklynnthe temptation to ask about the feud between her and her parents grew storng.
Brooklynns parents both disagreed with Brooklynns career path and told her she will never become
famous. The question slipped.
Are the rumours about your parents going against your record signing true?
“Julie, you shouldn’t always believe what you read. I mean it depends on what you’ve heard.
Basically my parents didn’t agree with me going into the music industry as they thought I wouldn’t
become successfull and it’d be a waste of mine and their own time but i mean who are they to say I
can’t make it? At the end of the day I’m 19 now, I’m old enough and wise enough to make my own
decisions.”
Honestly, this answer surprised me I think Brooklynn is very confident and strongly opinionated but I
guess that’s how you have to be to maintain your music career. The star currently is living on her
own with her boyfriend Callum in a house in Salford, Manchester home to other indie artists such as
The Smiths and The Stone Roses. The excitement began to build and I could help but ask about
Brooklynn collaborating with artists such as Jake Bugg, Disclosure, Oh Land and Foster The People.
How was is colabing with some of the biggest starts in the indie genre and when do we get to hear
the tracks?
“I’ve got to say from all of my favourite colabs, my favourite has to be teaming up with disclosure.
I’m a big fan of the house/indie music genre and would like to colab with them again. As for now all
of the tracks will be released on an album and I’m currently in the making of one of another music
video.”
