“Rhythmix’d with soul” – (ElizaGray (singer), Jordan Smith (singer) Marques aka Marz(singer/rapper)

The return of rhythm and blues in the form of Rhythmix is on the come up. One of the greatest
internet sensations, after going viral 3 months ago have gotten signed to Island records and
planned to begin working on their new album immediately!

Floating quote – “2013 is our year”

After sitting down in the warm natured, feel good vibe studio with the group it was evident that they
appreciated a wide variety of music and knew what type of music they fundamentally aspired to
create. The essence of playful banter was in the air and I was excited for the interview myself.

“For us man, it was all about going back to the music we grew up with and was so popular
throughout our school lives, if you didn’t know about these types of tunes and expected to have fun
at a party then you would find out the hard way” said Marques aka Marz

The group all grew in similar areas close by and attended the same high school in Wembley as well
as sixth form but only started making music when they were 16 although from the sounds of their
exclusive songs off the upcoming album they have the maturity of an established R&B sound with
their own twist on it. I proceeded to ask the group the questions we all wanted the answers to.

What is your upcoming albums’ release date?

“Ermmm… I knew this question would come up. We actually haven’t decided. All the songs on the
album need to be polished first before we think about a release date but hopefully soon” Eliza said.

Jordan then proceeded to say “You can’t rush perfection. We really want to take our time with this
and show people who we are as artists. 2013 is our year I can feel it”

Do you have any ideas on what you will call the album?

“Another tricky question” Eliza chuckled “We have a few names in mind, it’s funny we were
brainstorming a couple of names yesterday and was gonna let our fans decide by voting on Twitter &
Facebook or something”

Marques added “We know what we’re definitely not calling it, isn’t that right Eliza?” Hinting at
ridiculous suggestion“I was coming up with all these old school 90’s soul and saucy names but my
partners completely dismissed it.”

What inspired you to start making music and posting it on youtube as well as other social
networks?

“I think it was fate… na I’m just playing. I think this is all started in our last year of high school we all
signed up to do a play coincidentally, I had no idea the other two were interested I just saw it and
thought what the hell! We used to rehearse (mostly mess about) in the studios and music rooms
after rehearsal’s and we’d mash up songs and do our own remix’s together. We were friends before
but to have that type of chemistry when it comes to music instantly – maybe it was fate.” Jordan
replied
“HA. You make it sound like some sorta movie. After we performed and even during the rehearsal
process our other friends found out what we were doing in the play and how we incorporated one of
our mash-ups into it, suddenly we were word of mouth, before the show dates, people asked us to
perform to them. Then after all that was done we all felt lost in the world. Didn’t know what to do
anymore so we just started making more music after school every day until real late and one time
somebody recorded us and put it up on the net, before we knew it the views on that one low quality
video went through the roof, like it was only a few thousand but that’s more than we expected then
it became a weekly thing.” Marz added.

When did you first get contacted by Island records?

“That’s a crazy story, we were sitting in nandos and Eliza noticed she got an email, at first I thought
she was joking around so Marz and I didn’t pay attention, the next week I find that we have a
scheduled meeting with one of their executives to discuss a potential deal, although that was an
overwhelming day apart of me is still upset that I didn’t get to do my initial plans on that day… I was
gonna go skydiving for a friend’s birthday but because I cancelled they thought I was scared to do it,
I blame Eliza for always messing with us and not telling me about the meeting, it’s so hard to believe
her.” Jordan

Are there any other artists currently out that you would like to work with?

“There are so many to choose from but if I had to pick two standouts it would definitely be Beyonce
obviously, and Ed Sheeran. I don’t know how that would work we make different styles of music but
he is versatile and is an incredible artist. If you know how I can get in touch with him Backstage help
a sister out!” Eliza chuckled

R&B isn’t as big in the UK compared to US in terms of the amount that gets produced; do you feel
as though the British publicwon’t appreciate the type of music you’re trying to create?

“That’s a tough one, according to twitter we have a decent amount of British followers but on a
whole I don’t think it will affect it too much as British people tend to like R&B and the genre itself is
merging with Pop music. I think people will appreciate us as we aren’t so generic. Music is music,
people are people, no matter where you’re from if the music is good or you relate to it then it’s not
an issue.” Marz replied

Any last words for the Backstage readers?

“Keep your head up, follow your dreams and we hope to see you very soon” Eliza nicely added
