3. What is the history of the
settlement?
• We believe that Rocinha developed after the Second World War, with
Portuguese, French and Italian farmers arriving there who settled in small
farms on the hillside. Around 1930, it became the supplier to the city’s
Zona Sul. At the end of the 1950s, more immigrants arrived in rocinha ,
this time from other parts of Brazil, like the agricultural regions in Minas
and the Northeast.
• During the 60’s and 70’s the population in Rocinha increased, with a huge
expansion after the opening of the Rebouças and Dois Irmãos tunnels,
which led to increased job offerings in the region.
• This slum suffered with the power of criminal gangs and armed drug
trafficking, but this reality began to change in November 2011 when police
retook the territory to provide security to residents. The police operation
was peaceful, and the main dealer was arrested. Little by little security will
be established and a UPP will also be installed at this community.
4. What are the opportunities of
living in Rocinha?
• Its close to the city so is more privileged
than other shanty towns further away from
jobs and services.
• Recent reports suggest 65% of favela
inhabitants are a part of Brazil's new middle
classes. And in spite of these people's
somewhat low incomes, many of these
communities are a long way from being "slums"
as they are regularly shown.
5. Challenges of living in Rocinha
• Sanitation is often a big issue- in Rocinha
sewage flows down a large channel in the
middle of houses.
• The settlements are usually very
overcrowded.
• Some house at the very top are only
assessable by foot.
6. What effect, if any, did the
world cup have on Rocinha.
• Residents of Rio's favelas are renting out their
homes to visiting fans from around the globe,
offering comparative bargains to modest hostels in
short supply, which are charging as much as $450 per
bed during the tournament. Which will positively
effect the community.
• Before the world cup the Brazilian government was
said to of clean up the favelas before everyone
arrived in Rio.
