2. Where is Rochina?
Rochina is in Rio de Janeiro where 100,000 residents live. Rio is in Brazil, which is a
LEDC. It is said to be Rio de Janeiro’s largest, most populated and urbanised slum.
Rochina is located in Rio’s south zone between the districts of Gávea and São Conrado.
It overlooks Rio, as it is built on a steep hillside. It is located near a beach, about 1
kilometre away.
3. Brief history of Rochina
• It is a mystery where the name ‘Rocinha’ came
from, but it is most likely called that because
in the 1920s there was a famous open air
market in what is today the Santos Dumont
Plaza in Gávea
4. Benefits/ oppurtunites of living in
Rochina Favela.
• 99% have electricity.
• Most houses made from brick and cement – very stable and
safe.
• 65% of favela residents are a part of Brazil's new middle
classes.
• A majority have running water.
• Secure police security
• Lots of jobs such as barbers, tour guide, domestic maids,
police commander, daycare helper, moto-taxi drivers etc..
5. What are the challenges of living
there?
• Overcrowded settlements
• Sanitation, sewage flows down a large
channel, so it really smells.
• This can cause disease and illnesses and
because everyone lives so close together
people can catch it more quickly.
6. Effect of the world cup on Rochina
• Local residents rented their houses out to get
money.
• Tourists came so small businesses got a lot of
money.
