Lip syncing
1. Lip syncing
In a music video, lip syncing plays a big role in order to show the watcher that it is in fact a music
video. I know it plays an important role, but I wasn’t entirely sure on how much to include in my music
video. So I had a look at a couple of music videos which immediately gave me an idea on how much I
need to include.
The One Direction video, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ includes a lot of lip syncing especially the
chorus where the whole band was lip syncing. Because they are a band, the video can focus on other
things like them having a good time as well as the lip syncing.
Considering the song I have chosen to do a music video to, is by Two Door Cinema Club I decided to
have a look at some previous videos of theirs. ‘What You Know’, includes a lot of lip syncing, but not
as much as ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, unlike One Direction, Two Door Cinema Club have included
instruments which is another focus rather than the lip syncing. The chorus was lip synced by the
whole band; the main focus was on the instruments and the dancers in the video, but around 50/60%
of the video was lip synced.
I decided to look at a single singer as well as bands. Eliza Doolittle’s video to the song ‘Skinny Genes’
was mainly lip synced and mainly focused on her because she was the main focus and the video was
around 80/85% lip synced.
So, this has helped me a lot to understand how much of my music video needs to be lip synced. I will
need most of the video to be lip synced, but because the music act is a band, I can have other
focuses such as the skating in my video because that is the basis of the story line.
I have noticed that single music acts such as Eliza Doolittle include more lip syncing in their music
videos and focus on them with close ups etc. where as bands include instruments and other focuses.
