Screen. The course has been developed by the

10. Introduction to the course
Welcome to Explore Filmmaking: from
Script to Screen. The course has been
developed by the National Film and
Television School (NFTS), with support
from the British Film Institute (BFI),
through the Film Academy
programme.
WEEK 1
11. What will you learn?
This course takes you behind the scenes
to talk with filmmakers about what they do.
We’ll discuss different types of film -
Hollywood/independent, low/high budget,
short and feature length - and the ways
films tell stories. You’ll learn about the
language of film and the different roles in
the industry.
12. This week, we are going to focus on
the work of the writer in particular, in
combination with the director,
considering the difference between
plot and theme, as well as some of the
different sources for film stories and
the challenges of finding a market for
those ideas.
WEEK 02
13. This task has three parts - you may complete this step by
doing just the first part, the first and the second, or all
three.
PLANNING A SCENE
1. Write the short script.
2.Block out your scene (decide where the
camera will be placed in relation to the
actors)
3.Film the scene! (just use your smartphone’s video function
if you haven’t got a video camera).

14. This week, our host, Mike Figgis,
takes us through the range of
factors that a filmmaker needs to
take account of before making a
film, including budget, time
management, location, and
equipment.
WEEK 03
15. This week, our host, Corin Hardy
takes us through the process of
breaking down a scene, with a
detailed case study of one of his
music videos.
We will also be looking at the role
of the Director of Photography
WEEK 04
16. On the shoot
This week introduces the work of
a director on the set or on
location. You will gain insight into
the processes of detailed planning
of a shoot.
17. This week, our host, Justine Wright, takes us
through the process of editing that
material.
Justine looks at how time and space can be
manipulated to help tell the story and at
some of the different ways in which
feature films are structured. Our short film
of the week, Echo (2013),
WEEK 05
18. Capturing sound
How sound is used to provide a sense of
realism in a range of films.
This week, our host, Danny Hambrook
focuses on the role of the audio track in
film.
Danny takes us through some different ways
in which sound can be used.
