1. 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. RESEARCH
Through research of the sci-fi
genre, I found techniques and
themes that were common in sci-fi
films and tried to incorporate them
into a film concept and storyboard.
3. TROPES USED
• Mad scientist
• Isolated setting/ only human
• Mutants
• Omniscient guide
• Futuristic weaponry & clothing
• Artificial intelligence
4. TAKING INSPIRATION FROM OTHER
FILMS
After creating a story line, I took aspects of a film
that was successful and used them in my film. I
chose Alien, and added in aspects of that film that I
thought fitted my film:
• The female protagonist
• Slow camera movements (for the opening)
• Implications of the Monster before you meet it
5. APPLICATION OF “ALIEN TROPES”
For example, I used a female actress to play the A.I., and
started of the scene with a voice over from a Dictaphone,
like the text on the screen from the start of Alien. I also put
shots with notes about the mutants in the opening. I also
looked up low budget sci-fi films and found that using a
small room with lots of props in is a good way of creating a
sci-fi setting.
6. CHALLENGING THE GENRE
In my film, I used an everyday shed, rather than something
that looked high tech like in most sci-fi films. I also went for
a more organic theme rather than a technological feel, so
it has an air of a combination of post apocalyptic and sci-fi.
