Editor's Notes

  • #4 Largest extent of territory under the Zhou dynasty
  • #6 Warring States Period. At the beginning of the warring States period in 481BCE, there were 7 large states. A century later there were 3. By 221, Qin had conquered its rivals.
  • #9 Revision – concept came from myth – China’s first ruler thought to be son of sky god and earthly mother. His children were sons of heaven. Became important theory about right of ruler to rule. Developed during Zhou Dynasty. Emperor has right to rule given by the gods As long as he rules well, he will keep mandate of heaven When he is evil, he will loose mandate of heaven.
  • #11 In Chinese Ancient History, over time, we see “Dynastic Cycles”. So Mandate of heaven is an important concept
  • #12 So how did mandate of heaven become an established concept? Last 2 kings of Shang dynasty were evil rulers. Wen was king of small province of Zhou at the end of the Shang period. He was imprisoned by the Shang King because of his growing popularity. Eventually Wen was released. The Shang king planned to kill Wen, but died before he could do this. King Wen is considered the founder of the Zhou dynasty.
  • #13 Wen’s second son, Wu, defeated the Shang at the Battle of Muye in about 1046BCE. Argued right to attack Shang rulers because they were evil and therefore no longer had the mandate of heaven. Wu died 2 years later.
  • #14 Duke of Zhou (King Wen’s 4th son) stepped in.
