Welcome to April, Autism Awareness Month
By: Michele Matz, Special Feature Writer
Welcome to April, Autism Awareness Month! It is always an
exciting time of year when April comes around as the light for
Autism shines even brighter! There are so many people that touch
Autism, whether you know it or not.
The CDC just recently came out with updated figures for Autism
now stating that the ratio is 1:68 people. According to CNN Health,
people with autism continue to be overwhelmingly male. According
to the new report, the CDC estimates 1 in 42 males has autism,
4.5 times as many as females (1 in 189).*
Based on these figures, you know someone with autism whether
you realize it or not. Autism Awareness Month provides a
reminder to be considerate when working with others as you may
not realize how others process thinking. April also gives us the
opportunity to focus on providing those with Autism the opportunity
to obtain the highest quality of life with full dignity, value and
respect by all.
This can mean different things to different people. For children, it
includes providing the best opportunity for maximum educational
opportunities. For adults, this includes being understanding and
respectful. Here are a few things you can do to work with an adult
with autism:
• Be patient. Give me time to share. It may take me a moment to
compose my thoughts.
• Be clear in your communications. I am a visual thinker.
If you say “I am over the moon today!” I may picture you in outer
space rather than feeling happy.
• Be understanding if I do things that seem illogical to you. I may
prefer to eat certain foods, or where certain types of clothes. We
all have unique personalities, appreciate me for mine.
• Realize that just because I may act differently, this does
not mean that I am not as intelligent as others. Some of the
smartest people in the world are recognized as being on the Autism Spectrum. Some people we recognize on the
Autism spectrum includes Satoshi Tajiri (Pokémon creator) and Temple Grandon (animal and autism advocate). We
believe Albert Einstein and Charles Schultz (Peanuts artist) were as well.
Here in Wisconsin, the Autism Society of Wisconsin is dedicated to supporting A Better World for Autism. A large part if
this process is supported by the ASW Annual Conference. This is happening April 24-26, 2014, at the Kalahari Resort
in Wisconsin Dells. The information available at the various break-out sessions now spans across the many sections of
life. There are learning opportunities ranging from childhood, to college bound, and on into adult opportunities. Visit www.
ASW4Autism.org for more information.
We have also seen nice growth around the state in various local group activities. There are opportunities for individuals
of all ages to connect with others. The local chapter of the Autism Society of the Fox Valley has activity groups for many
ages. These groups include: Monkey Joe’s Play Dates (children up to 12), Hangin’ Til Ten Social Group (ages 7-10),
Teen Social Group, and Twenty Something Social Group. They also have a Parent Support Group as well as educational
activities. Visit www.focol.org/asfv and click on the calendar for more information.
There are many ways you could support Autism throughout the month of April and beyond. No matter what your role
is, you are connected. By doing little things like wearing an Autism Awareness pin, sharing Autism information (big or
small, in person or on social media), attending a local event, or even attending the ASW Annual Conference, you will be
expanding the world for Autism. The more awareness we can build, the further we will get for a better world.
Michele Matz
President
Autism Society of Wisconsin
*Michele was asked by the staff of the Fox Times to submit a piece so that the Fox Times could bring awareness of autism to the FVTC community.

What is Poetry?
By: Rich Weber
In honor of April being National Poetry Month, I ask all of
you a question. What is poetry? I will give you my answer,
and look forward to reading your answers. Do submit them
to the Fox Times Facebook page, or email them in.
I have thought long and hard about this question for a while
now. I believe I have an answer.
Poetry has different meanings to different people at
different times. So my definition of what poetry is, will be
completely different than what it means to you. Why is
that? Poetry is a fluid animal, picture a Tiger in the jungle.
Muscles rippling, it’s movements lithe and light, with all
the beauty and grace of its species yet with unmistakable
power. To see one is poetic in and of itself. To ponder one
is also an exercise in poetry.
Another example of poetry is that of water. It takes the form
of whatever contains it, yet if it is powerful enough, it can
sweep even the strongest person away. Throughout history
there are many examples of poetry doing just that. Each
one of you have a favorite poem. Why is it your favorite?
What about it drew you in? The tone? Rhythm? Structure or
form? Does it also speak to others as it speaks to you, or is
it yours alone?
Making love to a beautiful woman is poetry. An eagle in
flight, soaring high above the landscape is poetic. Nature
as a whole is poetry in motion, from the gently swaying
trees to the sheer raw power of the grandest storm. A falling
tree can lend itself to a poem, a blade of grass with a bead
of morning dew can give immense inspiration. The buzzing
flight of the busy bumble bee can cause the spark of an
idea.
Poetry can make you laugh, cry, despair and feel
tremendous pride. All within a few stanzas or lines. The
very design of poetry is to elicit a base response. Whether
good or ill, its intentions are to inflame the passions of the
populace. When done correctly it can do and be all of these
things. Again, the correctness of a poem is in the eye/ear/
voice of the beholder. One person’s Poe may be another
person’s trash. Subjective, completely reliant upon point of
view and simply you cannot please everyone.
That, to me, is what poetry is.

produce more than 90 million
chocolate Easter bunnies for Easter.
Meanwhile, research shows that
solid chocolate bunnies are the

Poetry Review: To Travel Without A Map, by KA Brace
By Rich Weber
For those who are unfamiliar with my review style, I do not
do spoilers. Spoilers are the tools of Satan and should be
banished from our realm
From To Travel’s Amazon page:
“...Life for us takes place in a world and whirl full of knowns
and unknowns, answers and mysteries, beliefs and doubts,
myths and rumors, the mundane and the days of storm.
Each of us experiences in our way the same things –we
love, we fear, we hope, we dream, we face tragedy and
personal defeat, we discover joy and fulfillment. Through
it all we find that life is a dance. It is, the author believes,
what living is all about—trying to learn the steps to the
dance. In this, K.A. Brace’s first collection of poetry, To
Travel Without a Map, he has tried to make some sense of
those steps we must learn and to the dance...”
Rich’s Take: Poetry is very difficult for me to judge.
As I have been getting older I find myself reading more
and more poetry. Some I enjoy immensely, others that
are “world favorites” I despise just as much. With that
disclaimer, I will continue with my review.
There are numerous poems within this collection that I
loved, too many to list. A couple of them I had to flip a coin
to see which ones I would include here. Here are six of
them that I personally felt were the best within
the collection.
The Rose Trees
A Death In The Family
What Whispers
To Travel Without A Map
That Day
Things Left Behind
Each one of them exhibited the best of KA’s poetry in
my opinion. Mind you, the rest of the collection is not too
shabby either. I liked the above six more than the rest.
Why? I don’t know. I grade on feeling. I don’t care about
technique, form and all of that pretentious nonsense. To
me, did the poem make me feel? For these six, among
many others that lost a bitter coin flipping battle, they did.
I will be reading and repeating this collection well into old
age. A couple of times reading it through is not enough
to get the full of breadth of each poem. A novel or story
you can read once or twice and understand it completely.
Poetry is something you can read a thousand times and
understand something different each time.
This collection is no different. 5 out of 5 stars for this
fantastic collection. If you wish to see more of KA Brace’s
poetry, check out his website, http://themirrorobscura.com/.
With April being a month for poetry, I thought highlighting a great collection was in order. I chose Dreams Are The Wisdom
Of Kings, by poet Sreejit Poole.
From Dreams Are The Wisdom Of Kings Amazon Page:
“...Dreams are the Wisdom of Kings is a collection of short stories that will make you laugh, cry and think. Whether
philosophical, emotional, or simply lyrical, there is a universal calling within that resonates with all….”
Rich’s Take: This one, while short is a thought provoking masterpiece. Technically sound throughout and written in a
poetic manner. No characters or story to really propel. To me this is more of a poetry collection, or a poetic short collection
if you will. Easily something that people can and will read repeatedly and learn something new each time.
It is difficult to pick just three favorites, since each “story” stands out in its own right. I shall try though.
• All The Coolest Parts
• What Does It Mean To Be A Man
• Living Between The Cracks
Many meanings within each of those “stories” for someone to discover. Since the stories are done in a poetic manner
each time I read it I find something new. I have already read it a half dozen times. Sreejit’s poetry connects with people,
and it connected with me. This collection of poetically written shorts will connect with you as well.
Easily 5 out of 5 stars for this collection. If you want to read more of Mr. Poole’s poetry, check out his Amazon page, or his
website, http://theseekersdungeon.com/.
Book Review: Dreams Are The Wisdom Of Kings, by Sreejit Poole

8. 8 | FVTC STUDENT PUBLICATION | APRIL 2014
Hello everyone, my name is Rich
Weber and I thought an exciting
feature would be Author Chat, where I
will interview authors from around the
globe. I selected Long Island’s own
Charles Yallowitz, an Independent
author in the Epic Fantasy category
for this first chat. Let’s see what Mr.
Yallowitz has to say.
Rich — Thank you for taking the
time to do this interview Charles, I
appreciate it.
Charles — No problem, thank you for
asking me.
Rich — Tell us about yourself Charles.
Who are you, and why did you choose
to be an Independent Author?
Charles — I’m an Indie Author out
of New York who has published four
fantasy novels and has yet to figure
out an easy way to answer the ‘who
are you’ question in interviews. I
submitted to agents and publishers
for years with no success. In 2013, I
talked to several authors who went
Indie and loved the freedom that came
with it.
Sure it’s more difficult and scarier
because everything is on my
shoulders, but I get a lot of satisfaction
from seeing my books selling and
hearing from readers. Of course,
I have that hope that I make a big
enough splash that I gain the interest
of a traditional publisher, but that’s
not as prevalent as it once was. If it
happens then it happens.
Rich — The Legends of Windemere
series is your signature work. What is
the series about? How many books do
you anticipate writing in the series?
Charles — Legends of Windemere
is a fantasy adventure series that
follows a group of heroes who have
been chosen to face ‘the coming
darkness’. I can’t say any more about
the enemy, but the series starts with
Luke Callindor setting off to prove
he can be a hero like his ancestors.
Along the way, Luke gets involved in
this prophecy and makes friends with
the other champions such as Nyx the
sorceress and Sari the gypsy.
A lot of what I write in the
series involves how these
characters handle their
roles and grow into heroes.
So it’s a very character
driven story where the
main conflict actually
takes a backseat to their
development at times. The
series is 15 books long
and all of them have been
outlined, so there shouldn’t
be any delays.
Rich — In your opinion,
what is the biggest obstacle
facing Indie Authors in
2014?
Charles — I don’t think
2014 has any new
obstacles for Indie Authors.
The same challenges
exist such as marketing
alone, time management,
and being able to handle
the highs and lows of the
market. Currently, I think
the biggest obstacle is also the oldest.
There is a stigma on the Indie Author
as the one who failed and has no real
skill. Many people will read an Indie
book expecting it to be terrible and
hunting for typos because many Indie
Authors don’t have the same level of
editing as the Traditional Authors do.
We make due with beta readers,
repeated edits, and work really hard,
but we’re only human, so mistakes
happen. This idea that all Indie
Authors are hacks is supported by
those who churn out cheap books
with no editing in order to make ‘easy
money’, but they’re not as common as
people think.
The majority of us put in the heart and
time to create the best product we’re
able to, but we get put into the ‘hack’
category if we slip up even once.
So, this image is one that is hard to
break and may forever be the biggest
obstacle for any Indie Author.
Rich — 2014 looks to be a big year for
many writers/poets. Do you have any
projects in the works, and what can we
expect from those?
Charles — I’m still working on the
Legends of Windemere series. I’m
aiming to publish the next three
volumes by the end of the year while
writing the ones that will be published
next year.
Another project is that I’m looking
into ways to combine the first three
volumes into a collection, which is a
slight challenge for an Indie Author.
Beyond this series, I’m outlining
and preparing the series that will be
coming next. My goal is to never be
without a project even if I take a break.
Rich — Someone is looking to
purchase a new book. They happen
upon one of yours. Which one do you
hope they find first, and what would
make them buy it?
Charles — I tend to want people
to start with Beginning of a Hero
since that’s the start of the series.
Yet, I’m probably prouder of Prodigy
of Rainbow Tower, which is the
second. There’s a lot more action
and world exploration in the second
book because the story is out of the
‘introductory’ phase.
It also has one of my favorite
characters to write, Nyx the caster.

Volunteer Today and Get the Benefits from Volunteering
By: Patty Jacob
With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are helpful to you, your
family, and your community. You can meet new friends, learn new things, and it can even help with your career. The
biggest advantage of volunteering and helping others is that it can boost and protect your mental and physical health.
Benefits of volunteering #1: Volunteering connects you to others
Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Dedicating your time as a volunteer
helps you make new friends, develop your social skills, find new interests. Also volunteering as a family can bring you
closer to each other and in return you are teaching your children to give back to others.
Benefits of volunteering #2: Volunteering is good for your mind and body
Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. It increases your self-confidence knowing that
you are helping others and it will give you a sense of accomplishment when you see the smiles on the faces you are
helping or the thank you that they say to you. By helping also it can help with depression because you are not alone,
you are with others and helping others and you begin to feel good about yourself. Volunteering can also help you stay
physically healthy because you are moving around and doing something.
Benefits of volunteering #3: Volunteering can advance your career
If you’re thinking of a new career, volunteering can help you get experience in your area of interest and meet people in the
field. Even if you’re not planning on changing careers, volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice important skills
used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, and organization. Another way it can help
your career, it can give you a chance to try out a career that you are not sure about. Not all of the skills that you will learn
will be easy ones, some volunteering jobs require training; they will provide training for you to do the job. In return this
training may help you to advance in your job. The best part of volunteering is that you gain leadership and communication
skills. It also brings the most valuable skills of all; compassion and a positive attitude.
Benefits of volunteering #4: Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life
Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore your interests and passions. Doing volunteer work you find meaningful
and interesting and can be a relaxing, an energizing escape from your day-to-day routine of work, school, or family
commitments. Along the way you can learn new things that you never thought you could. What really comes from
volunteering is the happiness effect and what you do passes along to others creating this effect to keep growing and
growing.
Volunteer today and learn a new skill, make someone smile, make your neighborhood a better place, and most of all do
what you want to do to make yourself happy while making others happy.
She’s a very powerful sorceress with a short fuse, but
there’s a great vulnerability to her that makes her a
versatile character for me to use. Family of the Tri-Rune
came out in March and it focuses a lot on her coming to
terms with some mistakes. She makes an amazing cover
too with all the fire.
Rich — I have heard that you have received some hate
mail regarding the Legends of Windemere series. Why that,
and what is it they are complaining about?
Charles — This is an awkward question because I don’t
like stirring the pot. One issue early on came about
because I write in present tense, which can be jarring to
people. The incident I believe you’re talking about involves
Allure of the Gypsies, third book of the series. There is a
romance that includes a woman who comes from a culture
where dating multiple people is encouraged to find the right
person.
Divorce is punished by exile in this society, so you have
to be sure you’re with the right person. The woman is
a supporting character, so she isn’t always around and
doesn’t even appear in the third book. The eruption
happened when a character shows up and claims to have
slept with her in an attempt to goad the boyfriend.
Some people exploded about this and sent me messages
saying that the boyfriend should have revenge sex, I should
kill the woman off, they’re not going on with the series,
and other statements along with expected insults at the
characters.
This really threw me off since I rarely hear about anything
else in regards to the third book and it was a side story.
Amusingly, I’m about to start writing the book where this
plotline comes to a head and the entire dynamic changes.
Rich — Where can we find more about you and your books
Charles?
Charles — Legendsofwindemere.com is my website, and
you can always search Amazon for Charles Yallowitz, and
that will take you to my Author Page.
Rich — Thank you again Charles, have a great day.
Charles — You too.

The McGuinness’s of Appleton
By: Tatiana Herazo
John McGuinness was born and raised half way between
Dublin and Belfast Ireland, married to Anna McGuinness
and the proud father of three adult children. Mr.
McGuinness and his family arrived in the United States
in 1998, wanting to make a new start and to further their
prospects as a citizen of Appleton Wisconsin.
Upon entering his place of business, The Mystic Ireland
Gift Shop, located at 201 S. Walnut St. I heard the sounds
of bag pipes playing on his CD player and there he sat, a
middle aged man of average height, behind the counter
surrounded by imported Celtic clothing, Irish logo apparel,
jewelry, home décor, several Irish drums called Bodhrans
(Behrens) and many keepsakes.
As I was speaking to Mr. McGuinness I could not help but
wonder about the upcoming holiday, St. Patrick’s Day and
how the Appleton Community has treated him throughout
the past twenty years. Was the transition difficult for the
McGuinness family and if so in what way?
When asked about his family’s arrival he simply stated
“There was no problem at all. We were made very welcome
and felt very much at home”. We continued to speak of his
family and his other places of business in which another
was located, a jointed to The Mystic Ireland, McGuinness
Irish Pub and another pub location in Milwaukee off of
Elm Grove.
Furthering our conversation my curiosity continued to get
the best of me. I asked about the celebration of St. Patricks’
Day in Ireland and how it differs from how it is celebrated
here in the United States.
To my surprise, Mr. McGuiness informed me that there
is not that much of a difference in celebrations between
the major cities here in the United States and in Ireland.
“It is the biggest parade. It’s a week-long affair, it attracts
800,000 people and the shops close”.
Many tourist are now attracted to Ireland during this major
holiday and Mr. McGuinness agrees that many things have
changed within the last twenty years in his native country.
There was no diversity within the communities and despite
the challenges of a changing economy, it now strives. It
was a big change. “Tourism is a big deal”
When asked about him missing Ireland, “I don’t miss home,
cause there is so much to see here in the United States.
After twenty years, we are at home.”

This semester brings new ideas, new members, and different directions for the
Electronics club. The Electronics club is looking to resurrect and combine with
the previous disbanded AMS (Automated Manufacturing Systems) club to further
the group’s scope of interests. Anyone who has an interest in meeting other
people interested in any facet of electronics is more than welcome to visit or join
at any time.
While there are no set events yet for this semester many ideas have been proposed. The club is looking towards holding
an electronics swap meet this semester. Many members presented ideas for tours of several facilities that rely heavily on
electronics and automation. Along with providing interesting information regarding modern technology integrated into the
work place, these tours are great opportunities to begin networking with prospective employers. The Electronics club is
also looking to put together a group of students from differing areas of study to compete in the Skills USA competitions
throughout the year. Beyond set events the club is also a great place to meet students with a common interest in all things
electrical. If anyone is looking for help in putting together an intricate personal project it’s a great place to meet people with
a plethora of skills.
The Electronics club meets twice a month currently at 11:30pm in the electronics core lab. Once a month we feed our
members, too! There is a $5 payment for club dues for the members; but this is a problem talk to us and something can
be worked out. Due to a large showing for our first meeting the room may be moved shortly to accommodate the growth in
interested students. Any changes and all meeting times will be listed on the club’s facebook page at https://www.facebook.
com/FVTCelectronicsclub. Students can also stop in at F144 with any questions. Ken Holmes is the advisor for the group
and can direct students to club members willing to answer any questions. Have a great semester.

Your Fox Valley Tech Phi Theta Kappa
By: Janice Kaat, Treasurer
Phi Theta Kappa is more than just an honor society for those who have worked hard to reach their goal of getting a 3.5
GPA or higher. It is a group of people who not only care about their grades, but they care about the community around
them.
On March 4th Restaurant. One helped the host by seating people, one greeted people as they came through the door,
and others bussed tables and filled up water bottles. They not only helped the staff at Hu Hot, but they had a great time
and good fellowship in the process.
The proceeds from that event (10% of their total sales) went to help with sending a group from Phi Theta Kappa to the
regional conference. They learned a lot and have some great ideas for expanding your Phi Theta Kappa’s endeavors in
the community, the school, and the lives of those around us.
On April 5th who would like to go to the prom but have no means of acquiring the apparel needed. If there is any way you
can help, please feel free to stop anyone wearing a Phi Theta Kappa top or email kaat4431@fvtc.edu.
Keep your eyes open for any posters on the bulletin boards for your various Phi Theta Kappa projects. These go to fund
scholarships and other events that help others. If you are a member of Phi Theta Kappa, come to one of the member
meetings. If you are not a member but would like to be, talk to a Phi Theta Kappa member to find out more or check up on
Facebook, FVTC Phi Theta Kappa. Until next time, gain knowledge.

Edible Input
By: Dana Schueler
Before I get started with my Edible Input for this month I feel I should introduce myself. My name is Dana Schueler. I am a
second semester student studying Culinary Arts and Hotel & Restaurant Management. I guess I am a non-typical student
being that I am a bit older than just out of high school!
I am in the program to gain the education and experience I need to succeed in this industry. So far so good. I strongly feel
that by immersing myself in my education and this college, the more I will take away from it. I hope that each of you can
take a bit of knowledge away from this column each month. I love feedback and suggestions so feel free to get in touch.
I recently had the good fortune to catch the last fish boil of the day at Pelletier’s in Fish Creek. I will be honest, I have not
liked most fish for the majority of my life. My education made me realize I would need to broaden my horizons and I have
enjoyed it for the most part. So I went into this knowing I was going to try the fish!
I had attended a couple fish boils in the past. I always enjoy the boil but inevitably I would proceed inside to order from the
menu. I was thrilled to stumble upon the boil and found a close seat right away. There were two large pots atop fire pits,
only one was cooking due to the late hour. I listened closely as other guest asked questions and I learned the kettle has
35 gallons of water inside. There are ten pounds of salt, baby red potatoes, sweet yellow onions and fresh Lake Michigan
Whitefish caught earlier that day; quantities vary depending on the crowd,. The potatoes go into the kettle first, they need
to cook about 30 minutes, next is the onions that cook for 15 minutes and last is the fish which will cook for about ten
minutes. Once ready the “Master Boiler” adds fuel to the fire, the flames rise to the sky and the kettle boils over removing
all the impurities and oil from the fish. The bell rings indicating it is time to eat. I heard him say this authentic Door County
fish boil has been known to transform people like me.
I had a good feeling I was in for a treat! Our plates arrived, and I appreciated the simplicity. I had a nice whitefish steak,
several red potatoes, a yellow onion, some coleslaw and rye bread. I was unsure about the fish. I took a few bites and
found it to be delicious. The texture of the fish was so tender it almost melted in my mouth. I did have to figure out the
bones, this was a bit of a challenge for a fish novice but I did ok. The sides were equally good. The onion retained its
sweetness and went really well with the fish and the potato. The portions were perfect. I could not quite eat it all and then
I learned we had pie coming, Door County cherry pie! They talked me into it. The pie was a perfect ending to a really
delicious dinner. It was fresh baked, just the right amount of sweet and tart.
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the fish just as much as I enjoy the boil. If you have not yet experienced a fish
boil I would recommend that you do. The entire experience is both interesting and enjoyable~

Heroin. It’s all over the news. Whether
you’re reading the obituaries, reading
about State Representative John
Nygren’s introduced legislation to
combat heroin use, or simply watching
about this widespread epidemic in
our state, it’s safe to say that it is
everywhere we look.
In 2012, Winnebago County and
Brown County each had more than 30
heroin cases processed by the state
crime lab and Outagamie County had
between 10 and 19. Only 16 counties
in Wisconsin (out of 72) did not have
any heroin cases processed by the
state crime lab in that year.
Heroin, which is usually used
intravenously with a hypodermic
needle, by smoking, or by snorting,
is a chemical that binds onto opioid
receptors in the brain, which generally
involved the perception of pain and
pleasure. When a person uses heroin
(specifically through intravenous
use) they generally feel a rush of
euphoria,and might feel heaviness
or relaxation throughout the body
and “cloudiness” or “fuzziness” in the
brain. Once a person has experienced
this initial state, they might go into a
state where they go back and forth
between feeling drowsy or sleepy
and awake. When a person goes
through heroin withdrawal, he or she
might experience physical pain, flu-
like symptoms, extreme discomfort,
uncontrollable bowel movements,
cramps, and irregular body
temperature. With heroin being such
a relevant problem right now, a lot of
people find themselves questioning
why someone would even choose to
use this drug in the first place.
What’s going on? Why has heroin use
become such a widespread issue in
the past few years? Looking back to
as recent as 2008, there was hardly
any media coverage or concern
regarding heroin and now it seems
that we can’t escape it. The fact of the
matter is that heroin is inexpensive
(only about $10 per bindle), it’s easily
obtainable, and it’s very potent and
very addictive (according to NIDA,
about 23% of persons that try heroin
become addicted to it). It’s believed
that heroin is being targeted towards
adolescents and quickly evolving
from experimental use to a deep
battle with the disease of addiction
and a significant downward spiral.
Heroin is used as an escape, a coping
mechanism, and a stress reliever.
Adolescents are targeted because
many are so often looking for a
method to feel relief quicker and faster
– and heroin is marketed as a means
for that.
So what can we do about this? The
Fox Valley Technical College Alcohol
and Other Drug Abuse Club aims
to raise awareness throughout the
campus and community regarding
substance use issues. We’ve decided
that we’re taking a stand against
heroin…by educating ourselves and
as many of you as we can. We’ll be
hosting a roundtable discussion this
April regarding the impact of heroin on
each of us, both directly and indirectly.
We invite all of you to come and join
us so that we can work together to
take preventative action against this
heinous epidemic.
Heroin wants your money, your job,
your family, your health, and ultimately
it wants your life. If you or someone
you know is struggling with heroin use
(or use from any other mood-altering
chemical) please seek help. The Fox
Valley area has numerous treatment
options that are available and ready to
provide help!

Each year Harbor House Domestic Abuse Programs
puts on an event to bring awareness and support to help
end domestic abuse in our communities. I volunteered in
2013 (which I enclosed a poem I wrote) and I volunteered
this year on Friday February 14 and hope to continue
volunteering so that we all can help stop domestic abuse
all around us. This year was a great turn out with 1 Billion
Rising for Justice as well as collaborating with the Fox
Cities Sexual Assault Crisis Center. Please ask for help if
your being abused and/or if you know someone is being
abuse.

I’m One More Survivor in the 1 Billion Rising
I’m going to be a survivor in the 1 Billion Rising
Got to escape and run away free
For another day can’t be about you but, me
Another strike, another blow
Beaten so much my life seems so cold
What’s my heart and souls worth I ask
You keep making me feel as if I’m nothing but dirt in your task
The pain and fear goes way too deep, I wish I could die here in my
sleep
I’m a collection of your evil knifes on a shelf
Tears in my eyes swell up
Silence is a hurtful pain to hold
Been told to just close my words within my mouth and shut up
No one needs to know what has happened to me I’ve been told
I often find myself shivering in disbelief out in the cold
I wish I could just die and stop living in fear
I fill my nose wrinkling up as my eyes being to tear
My heart aches and I feel it fighting for another beat
Just way too close to my heart I continue to be told I am nothing
Scars leave me breathless in pain that doesn’t go away
How can I possibly continue on as being told I am not a person but
a something
My mind is scarred with visions of the painful agony you put me
through
Life often seems so lonely, so terribly dark
Hiding within my heart is a cut from your evil knifes so deep that I
can’t see
You’ve beaten me so badly; you’ve left your mark
My body aches as another blow to the head explodes
Bruises come and go these scars last a lifetime
Pretending nothing is wrong or that I did it to myself I feel like a
mime
I’ve often had to tell stories to exclude seeing eyes of others upon
me
My heart aches in pain and nothing could possibly ever be the same
One too many dark and lonely days
Turn into nights of harboring pain
I often have to pretend in order to simply explain and make it
another day
I cry these many blackened tears
From the eyes of my soul I’m living in fear
I’m often told by you that I’m horrible and that no one else will have
nor want me
I’m ugly, stupid, selfish, and worthless you’ve told me that I’m the
one to blame
How can you destroy me with bruises shinning purple and blue
For I breathe in the danger that has wiped my soul of living where
there’s shame
I believe that I am nothing for you have told me so
I’m unsure if I am able to find the strength to let go
Planning and hiding from you isn’t the life I dreamt
For you’ve taken my life and tossed it on the ground
I’m often turning in more directions then I can handle in circles so
round
My heart won’t stop hurting with depths of pain I keep hiding
The nights often turn into days with horrible sounds
I can’t sleep or take a moment’s step towards freedom it’s binding
For you’ve taken my life and tossed it on the ground
Been told to just close my words within my mouth and shut up
No one needs to know what has happened to me I’ve been told
I find myself always shivering in disbelief
Silence is a hurtful pain to hold
Will I ever see tomorrow with relief
You’ve taken my dignity and threw it all away
Dug into the dirt and lost what seems like forever
I’m unsure that my heart and soul will never be found
The pain of a fist and a punching bag
Leaves me feeling so alone and sad
I can fill the tears in my eyes as the swell up with fear
I fill my nose wrinkling up as my eyes being to tear
My gut hurts and is sour from the fear that you have put into me
I wish at times I was dead for no one to look upon my body with
bruises to see
Another strike, another blow what’s my heart and souls worth
You keeping making me feel as if I’m nothing but dirt
I’m often told by you how horrible I am
I’m ugly, stupid, selfish, and worthless I’m told that I’m the one to
blame
The fear and terrier in my soul is nothing but a terrible feeling of
shame
I hate you for hurting me; I hate myself for being so afraid of walking
away
I have done all that I could to ask for a way out, I’d often pray
I can fill the tears in my eyes as they swell up
I fill my nose wrinkling up as my eyes being to tear
At times think I’m always living in fear
No one needs to know what has happened to me I’ve been told
Silence is a hurtful pain to hold
I believe that I am nothing for you have told me so
I’m unsure if I am able to find the strength to let go
Planning and hiding from you isn’t the life I dreamt
Another strike, another blow what’s my heart and souls worth
You keeping making me feel as if I’m nothing but dirt
Pretending that I’m alright
You’ve kept beating me as your punching bag
This isn’t what I planned for my life in sight
My life with you has been nothing but a drag
Let me go and I won’t say a word
I just want to leave without your hurting hands covering me
My visions been destroyed and blurred
Let me go, so I can once again see
Silence is a hurtful pain to hold
I cry in so much agony and pain with these many tears
From the eyes of my soul I’m living in fear
Let me go, so I can once again see
My visions been destroyed and blurred
I can’t live in silence any longer you’ve taken my life but, I am
stronger
To finally leave you and your damaging words, fists, and hands
I’m going to finally be within peace, free, and shining
For I am One More Survivor in the 1 Billion Rising
I’m going to finally be within peace, free, and shining
