1. Use this presentation template to summarise your
Place in Question assignment 2015
The template also introduces most of the units you’ll cover this year through selected criteria.
Up-load the finished PowerPoint to your block via SlideShare.
Each page asks you to reflect upon and evaluate your work since the beginning of
term, for each stage in the project.
Write careful explanations for each outcome (text between 14 & 20 points), and show
how you have covered the parts of the units listed on the page.
Include photos of each outcome to help this process.
Do not describe what you’ve done. Explain it, justify it and make links between
research, experiment and final outcomes.
2. Location studies
Unit 12 (Fine Art)
a. recording of experiences or
information to develop intentions
To start to understand the area I was
given, I made some quick pencil
sketches from various view points trying
to capture different perspectives and
combinations of materials. I also
measured the different structures in my
area and recorded them onto a sketch I
had done for further reference.
b use of materials, processes and
technology or a combination of
materials, processes and
technology to develop ideas
I took lots of photos of my area from
various angles thinking about lighting
and scale and how they affect an image
as a whole. I did some photo collage
and a bit of material experiment which
helped me think about ways to
represent the different structures in my
area creating a contrast between
materials.
3. Location studies
SketchUp and Movie
Multimedia
b) Developing multimedia ideas
by combining the use of
technology processes.
Using the measurements I had recorded
whilst doing my initial sketches, I created a
replication of my area using Google Sketch
up. From that I made a short animation
creating a focus on each different aspect
of my area. This helped me to come up
with ideas for my 3D model which I then
incorporated into another short animation
using Adobe After Effects. I think this
benefitted my project because I gained
skills using software and I also created
some interesting shapes and forms from
the animations, which influenced my work
further on in the project.
This is a screenshot from my After Effects animation which I found interesting. I like how there
was a combination of graphic design, 2D design, and an actual photograph. It creates some
interesting contrasts between the different ways of recording my area.
4. Making and developmental work
- (Large drawing, 3D, print)
Unit 12 (Fine Art)
b use of materials, processes and technology
or a combination of materials, processes and
technology to develop ideas
I experimented using different materials and
techniques to create a 3D model which
represented my area. I initially wanted to
create a structure which had representation of
each different structure/material in my area,
creating some interesting contrast. I found that
this was too much so I had to simplify my ideas
and focus on a certain point of my area.
a. recording of experiences or
information to develop intentions
I did lots of drawing of some of the
Marquette's I had made trying to develop my
ideas and push them forward. I started to
focus on the tree structure because I thought it
had the most potential for a 3D model. I made
a little scene with two trees and a building
form and photographed it using light and
camera angles to represent different moods
and scale.
5. Using historical and
contemporary
research
Unit 9
Contextual References
a research into historical and contemporary
work, showing understanding of the contexts
which influenced the work .
I did some research into a designer/artist called Le
Corbusier. Many of his Artworks had similar simplistic
qualities to his designs- mainly his architecture. I found
that this simplistic style was relevant to the time which
they were done, which was the post war time so there
was lots of shortages in materials and resources.
B recording and presenting information
explaining the use of visual language in others’
work.
I looked into a piece my Matisse called The Red studio.
The whole piece was a very similar tone so the visual
elements like line played a very important part in
representing the depth of the room.
c use of contextual references in own work
after developing my personal brief I looked into some
lighting designers. I wanted to try and combine my
influence from two designers to create one design idea
with both aspects of an open structured design and an
illustrated surface design.
6. Unit 13 (Design)
a) Resolve the needs of the brief to
develop intentions
Because the focal point of my area was
the tree I thought that the location of my
final piece would have to be relevant to
this kind of natural structure. I also
wanted it to be a kind of abstract modern
looking piece with recognisable natural
inspiration so I think the location was a
perfect one for this certain design idea
b) Develop a range of ideas in
response to the brief.
I first came up with four ideas of
furnishings that could be found in the
location my brief stated. I then focused on
my favourite design which was the light
shade and I did four more drawings to
explore some more ideas. Then using
these drawings I made some prototype
models to help me visualise the 3D side.
Developing your
personal brief
7. Unit 11 Develop & Produce Own Ideas
a) Create and develop ideas in response to the
brief.
After deciding on the shape of my final lamp I had to
come up with a surface design and a material to do
this in. again I did lots of little drawings with different
surface designs on. I decided which ones I liked best
and combined them both to create a final pattern
which I would use for my designs
b) Plan and produce final
outcome using specialist working methods and
processes.
I knew from previous trials that doing a spherical
structure would be quite hard to produce and make
look good. After adding the design to my first light I
realised that using a mould can be a quick technique
so I looked into some different materials with
flexibility and saw that porcelain and clay are very
good for this kind of structures. I then planned out
making some similar styled lights using different
techniques which could be easily reproduced with a
simple mould.

personal brief
8. Applying Professional;
practice in your work
Unit 10
Professional Practice
a investigate and analyse professional practice
I did a study on a craftsman/fine artist earlier in this project
which helped me to understand the commercial side of
designs/artworks.
b apply and develop professional practice in own
work
I was inspired by this profession practice study to experiment
with new materials which would be beneficial to the brief that I
had.
c investigate and apply health and safety and legal
requirements.
One health and safety requirement I took was when using the
wheel to make on of my lights I had to make sure that my hands
were quite wet to prevent friction burns from happening.
d appropriate standards of professional working
approach
I went over several ideas before finalising my ideas to make sure
they are as developed as they could be. I presented each phot
clearly on a spate page. I also put a few of my designs into the
room that they were designed for to shoe them as finished
products.
9. Unit 8
Personal, Portfolio
Development &
Progression
a personal presentation
and communication skills
b portfolio presentation
techniques
When doing artist research and
presenting my own work I have
used coloured backgrounds and
different coloured text boxes to
try and make the text more
clear and the photos stand out
to the viewer.
c identifying and
pursuing progression goals
I've looked into several art
foundation courses at different
institutions and I have also
booked several open days for
these universities which is all
recorded on my blog.

14. Evaluation
At first I was slightly hesitant about the place in question theme. But I was then allocated a space which I think had a lot of possibilities which made
me think more positively. There was a good range of different materials and scales both man made and natural forms. I started the project by
making lots of quick sketches of my are from different angles. I also measured the main structures in the area. I looked into lots of different artists
that use different types of perspective to represent spaces. I particularly liked the work of MC Escher who used lots of geometric shapes to create
perspective. The tree became the focal point of my area and I wanted to approach it in a similar way to Eschers work – using geometric styled
shapes. After making my model of the trees and photographing it I began to think about developing my ideas and I began to think about developing
it into some kind of household furnishing, bringing some of the outside atmosphere inside. I started by trying to make the tree formation look less
like a tree and a more abstract unusual form. I looked into a couple of artists that make lights and I was interested in the shadows that were created
with some of the designs and how they change the atmosphere of the room. I needed to think of a location for my lights to be designed for and I
found this room with a very natural formed room in a nightclub called Sketch in London. The first of my prototypes were made simply from tissue
stuck round balloons. I imaged I could make many and hang them at different heights with different surface designs based on the tree in my area
and some of the geometric forms like from Eschers works. I then developed the shape and surface design a bit so it wasn’t limited. I used a bowl for
a mould and collaged the tree design on using newspaper after trialling with some other materials. I liked the result but I thought that I could make
a more professional design by using another more substantial material. I then tried stoneware clay and porcelain. I laid the porcelain in sections
overlapping it but leaving gaps in places for the light to come through. Also using the same mould I used for the first light I produced a stoneware
lampshade using coils of clay. I just about managed to make a lampshade shape using the wheel out of porcelain and I painted on a similar pattern. I
really like all the pieces that I have produced and think I have learnt a lot during this project about different software, materials and processes. If I
had more time I would probably think about making a series of hanging lights and wall lights that actually work.
