Background :
In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, women were only viewed as mothers and
housewives, within development policies and programs .
Their economic activities and contributions were ignored and not valued.
Development theorists and planners saw men as the agents and actors of
development.
Men were seen to be the breadwinners of their families. Women were in
visible. Women were an under-utilized resource for development.

in various fields of life such as
politics, education , economy,
services, health and many more.
◦ 25% of Pakistani women were
"economically active
◦ In NWFP (89.54%) Sindh (74,36%).
Punjab (55.6%) and in Baluchistan
82.84 percent of female workers are
part-time

Role of rural
women
Rural -women are major contributors in four sub-sectors
of the rural economy:
 crop production
 livestock production
 cottage industry,
 household and family maintenance activities

ROLE OF urban
women
◦ In urban areas, females find their way to
schools, colleges, universities or scholarships
abroad .
◦ Medicine , engineering, architecture,
communications and IT.
◦ Women can now be seen encouraging
cricket teams and participating all kinds of
sports from cricket to athletics and even
marathon recently held in Lahore.

Women in armed forces
Women have been taking part in Pakistani military since
1947, after the establishment of Pakistan.
In 2006, the first women fighter pilot batch joined the
combat aerial mission command of PAF.
The Pakistan Navy prohibits women from serving in the
combat branch.
Total 4,000 women have served the armed forces till 2017.

Lieutenant General Nigar Johar is
the first woman three-star general
in Pakistan’s history.
She was promoted to the rank of
lieutenant general in 2020.
The officer has also been
appointed as the first female
surgeon general of the Pakistan
Army

preventing lives of thousands of
women and with their proper cure
preventing them from fatal disease.

  • 19. Role of women in Pakistan’s economy Background : In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, women were only viewed as mothers and housewives, within development policies and programs . Their economic activities and contributions were ignored and not valued. Development theorists and planners saw men as the agents and actors of development. Men were seen to be the breadwinners of their families. Women were in visible. Women were an under-utilized resource for development. 19

  • 28. Women in armed forces Women have been taking part in Pakistani military since 1947, after the establishment of Pakistan. In 2006, the first women fighter pilot batch joined the combat aerial mission command of PAF. The Pakistan Navy prohibits women from serving in the combat branch. Total 4,000 women have served the armed forces till 2017. 28
  • 29. Lieutenant General Nigar Johar is the first woman three-star general in Pakistan’s history. She was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in 2020. The officer has also been appointed as the first female surgeon general of the Pakistan Army 29
