Barriers for effective communication:
Filtering
Emotions
Language
Organizational structure
Overload of information

Filtering?




             NFMF
It happens due to
manipulation of information.

 The information will appear
   more favorable to the
          receiver.
    The information is being
    communicated through
   many organizational levels.

                    means there
                      are more
                   opportunities
                   for filtering to
Floor Manager           occur.

1. Memo from CEO to Manager:

Today at 11 o’ clock there will be a total eclipse of the
sun. This is when the sun disappears behind the moon
for two minutes. As this is something that cannot be
seen every day, time will be allowed for employees to
view the eclipse in the parking lot. Staff should meet in
the lot at ten to eleven, when I will deliver a short
speech introducing the eclipse, and giving some
background information. Safety goggles will be made
available at a small cost.

2. Memo from Manager to Department Head:



Today at ten to eleven, all staff should meet in the car park.
This will be followed by a total eclipse of the sun, which will
appear for two minutes. For a moderate cost, this will be made
safe with goggles. The CEO will deliver a short speech
beforehand to give us all some information. This is not
something that can be seen every day.

3. Memo from Department Head to Floor Manager:


The CEO will today deliver a short speech to make the sun
disappear for two minutes in the form of an eclipse. This is
something that cannot be seen every day, so staff will meet in
the car park at ten or eleven. This will be safe, if you pay a
moderate cost.

4. Memo from Floor Manager to Supervisor:

Ten or eleven staff are to go to the car park, where the CEO
will make the sun disappear for two minutes. This doesn’t
happen every day. It will be safe and as usual, it will cost you.

5. Memo from Supervisor to Staff:

Some staff will go to the car park today to see the
CEO disappear. It is a pity this doesn’t happen
everyday!

The way people interpret the information will
      be different because they were
        influenced by their emotion.

 A person in anger might not able to think
 rationally and it also caused complexity on
      what are they trying to express in
               communication.

   are hard to be understood by his
             subordinates.



      JARGON

Jargon extremely frustrating
Jargon
for a newcomer who has
no idea what the jargon means.

You must learn to talk clearly. The jargon of
scientific terminology which rolls off your tongues
is mental garbage. --Martin H. Fischer

Organizational
structure?

Too complex on organizational
structures and too many hierarchical
 levels are not good sometimes.



Greater chances to loss or
tendency to misinterpret the massages.

It is happen when the manager is

delivering   too much of
information or instructions to his
subordinates.

What are the results?

• subordinates got confuse
• perform their task in a wrong way
• Ignore, pass over, forget, or selectively
  choose information

• stop communicating

            to promote an effective
                communication


•   By using feedback
•   By effective listening
•   By simplifying the language
•   By controlling emotions
•   By creating trust

Ask for
Feedback!
the manager should ask his subordinates
whether they understand or not.
If not, make a clarification.
Be flexible!

Other methods to ask for feedback:


Ask them to   restate
the information.
Ask them personally.
Eg : Through e-mail.

Effective listening

           How to become


   “a good listener”?

when someone talks,
we must put our

attention
to hear what is he or she
trying to say.

Be   empathy


          NFMF
Do not   interrupt            when
a person is talking.

Simplify your language!

Make the things simpler or easier or reduce
          in complexity or extent.

      Your idea only can be delivered
 if both parties understood with the gist of
                communication.

Illustration:
The hospital administrator should use
understandable words when giving an
instruction because they are working
with different group of employee.

Again, jargon words should

be carefully used
by the manager.

control your emotions!

Ones should know how to control the
situation.

Calm down and get the emotions
under control before communicating.

Create   TRUST!
Trust can create a good relationship.
And it also
can solve problem

harmoniously!

  • 15. It happens due to manipulation of information. The information will appear more favorable to the receiver. The information is being communicated through many organizational levels. NFMF
  • 16. CEO Manager More levels means there are more opportunities for filtering to Floor Manager occur. NFMF
  • 17. 1. Memo from CEO to Manager: Today at 11 o’ clock there will be a total eclipse of the sun. This is when the sun disappears behind the moon for two minutes. As this is something that cannot be seen every day, time will be allowed for employees to view the eclipse in the parking lot. Staff should meet in the lot at ten to eleven, when I will deliver a short speech introducing the eclipse, and giving some background information. Safety goggles will be made available at a small cost. NFMF

For a moderate cost, this will be made safe with goggles. The CEO will deliver a short speech beforehand to give us all some information. This is not something that can be seen every day. NFMF

This is something that cannot be seen every day, so staff will meet in the car park at ten or eleven. This will be safe, if you pay a moderate cost. NFMF

  • 23. The way people interpret the information will be different because they were influenced by their emotion. A person in anger might not able to think rationally and it also caused complexity on what are they trying to express in communication. NFMF

  • 26. Jargon extremely frustrating Jargon for a newcomer who has no idea what the jargon means. NFMF

  • 37. Ask for Feedback! the manager should ask his subordinates whether they understand or not. If not, make a clarification. Be flexible! NFMF
  • 38. Other methods to ask for feedback: Ask them to restate the information. Ask them personally. Eg : Through e-mail. NFMF
  • 39. Effective listening How to become “a good listener”? NFMF
  • 40. when someone talks, we must put our attention to hear what is he or she trying to say. NFMF

  • 42. Do not interrupt when a person is talking. NFMF
  • 43. Simplify your language! Make the things simpler or easier or reduce in complexity or extent. Your idea only can be delivered if both parties understood with the gist of communication. NFMF
  • 44. Illustration: The hospital administrator should use understandable words when giving an instruction because they are working with different group of employee. Again, jargon words should be carefully used by the manager. NFMF
