13. Mitigation
• Mitigation refers to all actions taken before a disaster to reduce its impacts, including
preparedness and long-term risk reduction measures
• Two types
1. Structural mitigation
Use technological solutions like flood levees
Housing animals away from flood plains
Managing grazing
2. Non-structural activities
Legislation, land-use planning likes parks in flood zone,
advising owners about the risks of disasters
Strengthening veterinary services (herd health management, vaccination,
epidemiology)

may be needed to cope with the effects of a disaster can be rapidly mobilised and deployed,

• National warning systems
• Vaccination programmes
• Animal shelters
