6. THIS NEW MARKET HAS A HUGE GROWTH POTENTIAL
CASE STUDY
Connecting Riders with Drivers in a Click of a button
By launching a mobile application that allows people to request a driver with just a click of a button,
Uber has basically created an API between cars and users, through their smartphones. Using
their API, a new niche market was opened and a $3.5 billion company was born. Now Uber is thought
to make ~$1 billion in gross bookings1. After the 80% cut to drivers, this is about $200 million in
revenue each year.
Currently 23 million cars on the road are connected to the Internet in some manner, by
2020 its expected that 152 million cars will be connected.2
In the next 5 years, this industry is projected to grow at a rate of 35% to $132 billion.3
How much economic impact would be created by a company that creates an API for
paying gas? Tolls?
