1. Introducing the International Baccalaureate
The History of the IB
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation, motivated by its mission,
focused on the student. Founded in 1968, it started as a pre-university curriculum and a common set of
external examinations for students in schools throughout the world that evolved into the IB Diploma
Programme (DP). In 1994 the IB added the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16, and
in 1997 it adopted the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3 to 11. The IB currently works
with 3,698 schools in 147 countries to develop and offer four challenging programmes to over 1,151,000
students aged 3 to 19 years. Its programmes aim to help students develop the intellectual, personal, emotional
and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
Lyceum-School 6 is an IB world school with authorization to deliver the IB DP, aiming to deliver
programmes across the IB Continuum.

Our Vision
Lyceum-School 6 is a state school. The international section aims to produce students who are creative,
international-minded, and active agents of change in society; students who are centred in their own culture,
but whose minds are opened to the world through mutual understanding, trust and respect. We aim to attract
international students who wish to study side-by side with Azerbaijani students in a community in which
they feel cared for, trusted, understood, valued and safe. We want our students to be active learners who are
challenged by expectations that are high, but realistic, in lessons which are driven by shared objectives. We
would like our students to develop critical thinking skills and have the ability to use the technologies of the
future. Parents will be welcome partners in our project. We expect that the majority of our students will gain
bilingual diplomas.

The International Baccalaureate Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people
who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to
develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These
programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong
learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
