Symbian was an operating system initially developed for PDAs in the 1980s. It became popular as an OS for smartphones between 2001-2008, being used in devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and others. In 2008, Nokia acquired Symbian completely and later announced it would make the OS open source in 2009. The OS was written in C++ and emphasized personal information management and connectivity features.
