The word essay is derived from the Latin word ‘exigere’, which means ‘to examine’. Therefore, the modern form of an academic essay requires a thorough examination of students’ ideas about a particular topic. There is no hard and fast rule about the number of paragraphs in an essay, but generally, it is widely accepted that an essay must contain at least three paragraphs. Unlike blog articles, an essay has a paragraph of about 100-200 words. So if one has to write an essay of 1000 words, then there will be on average between 5 to 10 paragraphs with limited sentences in an essay. However, this is not a strict rule to follow, but these are minimum requirements acceptable for an essay globally. Following this rule, you need to write the three main parts of an essay. The first paragraph would be an introduction to your topic followed by the body text, which is the detail of the topic and in the last, a conclusion will be written.
