Why Is Affordable Housing Important
Affordable housing is housing which is deemed affordable to those with a median household income as rated by the national government or a local
government by a recognized housing affordability index. The New York City Housing Authority was created in 1935 to provide affordable housing for
New Yorkers with low and moderate income. TheNew York CityHousing Authority is one of the largest public housing authorities in North
America and are homes to 400,000 New Yorkers who reside across the City's five boroughs. The NYCHA provides homes to 1 in 14 New Yorkers who
provide services which are essential to our city, including those who are employed as teachers, police officers, and nurses. Being able to have affordable

Affordable housing is a key issue in New York City because affordable housing doesn't address the needs of lower and middle–income households. The
people who do need affordable housing don't qualify for it based on governmental standards and majority of the population aren't able to buy houses at
the market price. Affordable housing programs are an essential need to many hard–working New Yorkers. Affordable housing aids adults, children, and
seniors in feeling secure and stable and contributes to the mental and physical well–being of New Yorkers. Something I can do to aid in the fight for
affordable housing is spread the word about it and the issues surrounding it. By spreading information about affordable housing I'd be educating my
fellow New Yorkers on the housing crisis in our state. I'd also inform individuals who want to fix it how to do so through word of mouth, social

Gentrification is the process of taking distressed inner city neighborhoods and upgrading them to be more attractive to upscale skilled workers, and
major corporations; where the neighborhood is converted to more affluent residential use. Studies profile most gentrifiers to be affluent, young, single,
urban professionals and young, married couples who are both wage earners and have no children or small families. Housing improvements, city
service upgrades and expansion of the local economy is often attributed to these gentrifiers. There are many New York City neighborhoods in recent

Gentrification can be positive for all involved if the government is able to employ successful provisions where the negatives turn into positives and
existing members of the community won't become unable to afford to continue to live in their residences due to rising housing costs and thus be forced
out to live elsewhere. Support mechanisms must be in place for the current community to be able to reside and blend into the newly redeveloped

provide a temporary solution; on average a person is allowed to stay in a shelter for a maximum of 180 days. How can that individual/family regain
their "self–sufficiency" in a city where the rent is amongst the highest in the country, and affordable housing is limited. Nearly half of all New York City
residents pay more than 30 percent of their income on housing. Median rents have risen 75 percent since 2000, at the same time, that median incomes
have declined, and between 1994 and 2012, the city lost 105,242 of rent regulated housing. To address this problem, and restore these people sense of
citizenship, we need a citywide reform of the housing system.

The problem is there is inevitably a lack of housing, due to homelessness and influx of people. Without enough housing, the prices of the homes will
