7.) Looking back at your Preliminary Task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to full product?
I feel like I and my group have learnt a lot during in-between the Preliminary Final and Aura, some
directly with media and others not. One of the keys things we learnt was that progression and
planning was vital in making a watchable film, as when it came down to our preliminary we had
ideas of shots and storyline we wanted to use but not a storyboard and schedule making us not
entirely sure of what we were doing. Our lack of communication was also lacking when shooting our
preliminary film, as when we were working together we would be very good as working in a whole
group but when it came down to us not being together the information we wanted to tell each other
would sum not get lost. We weren’t as careful with our Prelim Task with continuity and editing, as in
a coup of shots we moved props around so it looked like they had jumped.
I believe my whole group has developed techniques and understandings of filming a horror film
since the creation of our preliminary task. The crucial thing we learnt during this process was that
organisation skills are crucial, due to us of not thinking about many aspects of our preliminary task
the main one of these being the lighting. As the result of this our Preliminary Task decreased in
quality due to the natural low key lighting as it was filmed at night, this helped our awareness of the
importance of the lighting when we were filming our final project. So we used natural lighting still
but this time have our film set in day light therefore having high key lighting instead of low. The
Prelim also helped showed us running through each
scene with your actors is also very crucial by
directing them in the way you want your film to
turn out, as our script throughout the Prelim task
kept changing therefore making us to re-film some
of the shots we actually used. This helped us with
our actual filming as our group saw the location
before it was filmed and so did our actors which we
then ran through the whole process so when we
did shot we would have flaws with our schedule
and no time reduction. Which helped arose our
scripting issues as we told the actors how to adapt
it if they did forget; I also feel our group have learnt
about each other and what skills we were best
suited for as in our preliminary we didn’t know

what jobs to take within the process of making it so by the time of creating our final film opening we
realised our best results came from sharing roles of
directing, camera work and editing.
From making our Prelim and Final Film Aura, I’ve
felt like we had various similarities and differences
which contrasted between the two. The Prelim Task
helped us to see which of our shots worked well,
we soon then realised the medium shots we took in
both films were our best shots as we thought in
both tasks they portrayed the characters and
meaning in the way we wanted them to be
portrayed.
In the Preliminary task we used the editing techniques, match on action and shot reverse shot, and
the 180 degree rule. I thought this helped gave us a better understanding of making a successfully
accomplishing editing technique, we decided when making the Prelim Task to make it a horror genre
based film opening as we thought this would help us more in understanding what shot types work
and don’t. By making both films have the same genre we also learnt how to make different
atmospheres in the audience such as drone tension, scared, anxious and many more which is what
we wanted to create. However when it came to making our final film we decided to do our genre
horror but a different style to our Preliminary Task, this time making us still learn and develop on
what shot types and movements help contribute to the audiences emotion. The type of horror genre
we done was a psychological horror.
