This website plays on the irrational fear of the dark shared by most people to create a sense of fear within the viewer. Before the website opens fully, a video of a street with the street lights slowly going out until it is dark plays. We fear what lies within the dark and expect something to jump out at us. This is very conventional in horror films and works well as subtle way of creating fear right from when you first load the page.
They have used the effect on neon lights in the title to relate to the already established theme of darkness. By using this contrast, the designer is able to emphasise the presence of the darkness and the sense of danger and foreboding it connotates, especially when compared to its antithesis. The designer has continued with a block, sans serif font for the navigation buttons and has integrated the social media buttons into the page, meaning they are not, as with many websites, drawing focus from the rest of the page. They have also just used the two most popular social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter, knowing these are where the audience will be largest. The whole menu is subtle and allows the powerful image of the deserted street, and embedded teaser to be the focus of the page.
Again, this website is trying not to distract from the powerful imagery it has created with too much elaborate text. The actor credits are unusually small but this probably because the actors are not very well known and unlikely to sell the film based purely on their names. This is why the storyline and imagery are so fundamental to the design. The teaser is positioned so that it appears from nowhere to hover in the middle of the street. This relates to the title of the film as its power to appear can surely also be used to “vanish”. It also allows it to become part of the scene as apposed to something just pasted on top of an image.
