• Anorexia is an eating
disorder characterized
by excessive weight
loss, irrational fear of
gaining weight and a
distorted body self-
perception.
3. HISTORY OF THE TERM
• The term anorexia nervosa was
established in 1873 by Sir William Gull,
one of Queen Victoria's personal
physicians. The term is of Greek
origin: an- (ἀν-, prefix denoting negation)
and orexis (ὄρεξις, "appetite"), thus
meaning a lack of desire to eat

7. TREATMENT
• Treatment for anorexia nervosa tries to
address three main areas.
• 1) Restoring the person to a healthy
weight;
• 2) Treating the psychological disorders
related to the illness;
• 3) Reducing or eliminating behaviours or
thoughts that originally led to the
disordered eating.
8. HOW TO PREVENT EATING
DISORDER
• Parents emphasise on health and not on
weight
• Approach food and exercise with a
positive attitude
• Be supportive
• Increase your self-esteem
9. INCREASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM
• Try to understand yourself and accept the way you are.
• Stop comparing yourself with other people.
• Stop putting yourself down.
• Be true to yourself.
10. STATISTICS
• 50% of girls between the ages of 13 and 15
believe they are overweight
• 40-60% of high school girls diet
• 30-40% of junior high girls are concerned about
their weight
• 80% of 13 year old girls have dieted
• 40% of 9-year-old girls have dieted
• 85% of patients develop this disorder between
the ages of 13 and 18
