History of punk
1.
2. Punk music came into place in the mid- 70’s, which was a reaction to
the ‘disco’ music of that time. It was originally shaped by wellknown bands, such as the Ramones.
It is said to have been started by individuals who didn’t know very
much about the rules of music, so in effect was able to break them
easily.
England adopted this genre and used it to fit the issues within the
country, such as high unemployment rate. The youth of this time
were rebellious and angry. And as they had no work to occupy
them, they had surplus time to adopt the genre.
This is when punk fashion began. It was first stocked in a shop called
‘SEX’, which was owned by Malcolm McClaren, who had shortly
prior been to New York and wanted to reinvent the fashion of that
area, as it was highly successful. However, he failed and then drew
his attention to the youths within New York. He then started a
project, which is widely known as; ‘The Sex Pistols’.
3. Here is an screenshot extracted from
the track ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ by The
Ramones. It can be noticed from this
screenshot alone that the expected
stereotypes of the individuals within
the audience would fit. For example,
in this video, every person seems to
be rather young, eccentric, individual
and the ones who appear to be
artists seem rather sluggish.
This demonstrates very clear foundations that the punk genre would have based
itself on.
4. By the late 70’s, punk was regarded as a solid
genre and fashion. After which, sub- genres
began to form, as the very ‘punk’ rule of
breaking the rules was what many aspiring
punk artists strived to achieve.
5. By understanding the roots of a genre, I may better
grasp the significance of certain features of the
punk genre. Popular names such as ‘The Ramones’
and ‘The Sex Pistols’ may display to me the
strongest conventions, and help me to construct a
piece connoting the genre most effectively.
