1. Hypothesis
I predict that the results of my investigation will allude that female participants
show more ‘flowery’/metaphorical language whereas male participants
describe the images in a more literal sense. For instance, one of the images I
have prepared is of a woman wearing a red dress, I predict that the male
participants will give words about the literal appearance of the dress (eg. ‘red’)
whereas female participants will focus more on the connotations suggested by
the image (eg. sexy). Similarly, this ties in with the presumption I have that
female participants will use more abstract noun’s to describe the images than
male participants. What’s more, I have intentionally made sure that a couple
of the images behold a sense of ambiguity in terms of what it is the participant
is describing; there is an image of a bearded man taken from a clothing
website, I expect that female participants will be more likely to describe the
model in the photo whereas male participants will describe his clothing. In
terms of pragmatics, modern day society is very concerned about the way we
look, this is a factor that I feel will have an impact on the language used. I
personally believe women in particular take an interest in appearances; this
spurs on my prediction that when presented with the images of people, it will
be the female participants who focus on the models physical appearance as
opposed to the clothing they are wearing.
