The hypodermic needle model is a communications theory where mass media aims to directly inject ideas and beliefs into the minds of the audience. It assumes the audience will passively accept the intended message from the sender. Within music, this model suggests music videos can communicate certain values to a target audience. For example, depicting sexualization of women in R&B videos may convey that these artists have negative values towards females. Portraying drug use can also communicate artists are criminals to older audiences.
