Yossel: Novel Analysis
Graphic novels have been seen as a controversial topic. Are they literature or are they part of a
separate category of art? Many authors have stepped out of the stereotypical superhero graphic
novel box and into a new world of using graphic novels for autobiographies, fiction stories, and
historical accounts. The graphic novel Yossel tells the story of a young Jewish boy named Yossel
who grew up in Poland in the early 1940's. He spends most of his days drawing superheroes and
aspiring to become the illustrator for a comic book company in the future. However, one day in

Although many of the stories are valuable and even edifying, most do not contain the same literary
content as the "classics." Many of the sentences are short, simple, and made primarily of dialogue.
The story lacks in depth of written description, instead using pictures to relay the author's idea; The
pictures are the primary method of telling a story in a graphic novel with words as the secondary
force. Illustrators draw enough pictures that the reader is able to get an idea of the plot without
reading a single word. Literature uses words as the primary force to convey the idea. The literary
canon is made up of novels which essentially use the twists and turns of diction and syntax to
communicate the depth of themes and purpose, not pictures. Although both of these types of books
have to potential to be reinterpreted for generations and pulled apart to find themes and teachings

Movie Review : ' The Last Man '
Television is quickly replacing film as the go to form of media when adapting a comic book or
novel. Sure, you can write a film based on a book or comic and have it be great, but if it 's a lengthy
property, that means that a lot of stuff will get cut out. Do you know how fantastic it would be if
Harry Potter was adapted for a television series? The books are huge, and although the movies are
great, I think that if they adapted the books into a television format, it could have been even better.
There are still a lot of comic books and novels that could be adapted for television. These are just a
few I thought that should be adapted for television.
Y: THE LAST MAN

This graphic novel series has been in development hell for years. At one point, Shia Lebeouf was
attached to star as Yorick in a film adaptation, but thankfully that disastrous idea fell through. With
60 issues, a movie would have to cut out a lot of stuff to fit in such a rich story, so the film route
would feel like a let down if you 're a fan of the comic.
What would make this television worth is the fact that each comic feels like an episode of television.
The series has a satisfying beginning, middle and end to work with. It 's not The Walking Dead
where the characters go through the same plot over and over and over again. With Y: The Last Man,

Kapow Coffee
KaPow coffee is a unique coffee shop that combines coffee and comic books into one experience.
The shop is owned by Laura Davidson and her brother Martin. Both found the idea of opening their
own business exciting, and the response they have gotten so far has been very positive. "Customers
can order themed drinks, like The Dark Side Mocha, as a tribute to their favorite "Star Wars"
characters and the late actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the iconic film series"
(Harvey para 16). Their main customer base is lots of college students because the location is near
UCCS, but also families and many people who are comic book fans. They have a huge selection of
comic books and even take specific requests. To get their name out into the community they use

Manga Shakespeare is able to properly convey Shakespeare's original story and language through its
use of images, original text, and speech bubbles. The manga's use of different speech bubbles
conveys the intended language and emotions of Othello, as if it is being preformed rather than if it is
simply read, thus putting forth a product that accurately depicts Othello in a similar fashion to which
the play originally was intended to be viewed. One of the ways Shakespeare's language is conveyed
in the manga is through the use of normal speech bubbles. Throughout the manga speech bubbles
are the main way that Shakespeare's language is presented. These speech bubbles are simply round
text blocks, which may or may not contain a line pointing in the direction of the character that is
speaking. The speech bubbles are quite effective in conveying Shakespeare's language, as they are
easy to read and clearly indicate which character is speaking. In comparison, the text makes it clear
who is speaking by the name of a character being mentioned before their lines. This is also an
effective way of ensuring the audience is aware of what is being said, although based on the reader

For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of
this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a comic, a video game, and a TV series. The focus of

When describing an intellectual, the term "Brainiac" may be used. What is little known about this

their image with words. Even if I have a perfect visual of my character in mind and very descriptive
choice of words, my readers will never see my character the same way I do. I might be able to

Capturing Invisibility I came to Montclair to have the opportunity to study fine art. As an aspiring
artist, I am always searching for means of inspiration. When I read a book, I have a lot of trouble
remaining focused after the first ten pages. In affect, it typically takes me several different days and
time blocks to complete the book. Because Invisible People is a graphic novel, I was able to not only
easily keep my attention on the story, but also genuinely enjoy the plot. I sat down during a rainy
day and read the whole novel in under an hour. Being provided pictures and drawings while I read a
novel helps me connect with what is going on and allows me to metaphorically put myself in the
story. The main problem with The Things They Carried is that it is just like every other book I have
ever read. Before reading Invisible People, I had never even thought about picking up a comic book,
or any form of graphic novel. To my surprise, I had a lot of fun interpreting the story line while I
analyzed the well–thought out illustrations. The Things They Carried is an in–depth novel depicting
life, love, death and war. Although it contains a compelling message, there is no spark that entices
me to continue reading more of it than I was assigned. Fortunately, because of the expressive

Comics, since their conception, have been seen as an immature media that is strictly pop culture
without the ability to pass substantive messages. However, the quantities of people who read and
share comic books provide open pathway to idea sharing. The Legend of Chun Hyang I is an
example of this cultural messaging through this medium. Written in 1992, as Asian cultures were
joining the globalizing world, this manga represented cultural hybridity as a Korean folktale being
represented by a Japanese company. The storyline is relatable for young girls who want to be

Books change with readers as they age from a child into an adult. Children start off with simple
picture books or short stories that hold many images and grabs their attention. Picture books that

Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the
Holocaust. He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the
animals the full potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being

writer automatically begins with a personal experience. He or she in beginning is sharing how they
were fearful and alone. Also, how he or she did not enjoy going to school and meeting people. By
doing this, Jones is using dialogue to grasp the reader's attention. He is using a personal experience

Introducing the mansion, a long distance shot is used. This gives a clear view of the front of the
mansion and its immediate surroundings giving the audience a full picture of where the film is set.
The effect of lifeless immobility created by the camera's stillness makes the audience relaxed adding
shock to the effect of the scream that quickly proceeds in shot 2.
Unnatural silence creates a bizarre atmosphere that puts the audience in an uncomfortable position
from the infinite background sound in everyday life. The effect prepares the audience for something
to happen and builds up tension. Creepy silence continues in shot 2 until Grace traumatically

First, shot 2 opens with a close up shot on Graces face with several seconds' silence to add tension
for the scream later on. The close up shot does not allow us to see where the action is taking place

To my knowledge, I have never read or seen that many horror comics that involve women taking the
lead over the typical male. Just like in Vampirella, it had some horror in it, but was more focused on
being sexual and outlandish. One particular comic book series I was quite fond of was The Sandman
by award–winning writer Neil Gaiman. What really got my attention was the character Death; the
sister of the main protagonist Sandman. Death is both the lord and personification of all death and
life, but she is the complete opposite of what people see her image as, an image of a skeleton with
scythe and a scary black robe. We do not know the true image of death, but why depict a woman?
Why not just a figure of a skeleton? Is it too complicated to show Death as a skeleton figure or a
mere shadow, like in the film The Frighteners? It is not scary and I find it sexist to have an image of
a dark and strange figure be a woman. This is similar to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline published by
Marvel where Thanos, the main antagonist, is on a quest to please Death herself in order to win over

feelings, and while for a period, the combination of both image and written word remained
underutilized, the core idea behind 'comics' or 'graphic novels' continued to develop. The subject of

Many people associate colorful pages full of images with childishness, and therefore to be taken less

this in his interview by Julia Tindell. He says, "I know that the text is there to tell what the pictures

where the main character, Craig, goes out to where he and his younger brother would go out to play

For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of
this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a comic, a video game, and a TV show series. The
focus of this ethnography is to understand how the comic book culture influences many fans. Since
the series is based on a graphic novel series, and some of the fans are schooled in comic culture;
they arrive with literacy in comic storytelling. Others who are not fans may recognize the visually
and narrative of zombie films, in the horror genre after 1968's Night of the Living Dead and Dawn
of the Dead. Yet many Walking Dead fans appear to have migrated to the zombie tale without any
particular connection to the comic book storytelling, or significant fascination, and the series'

In the writing of Gerard Jones "Violent Media is Good for Kids" is a very interesting essay in which
he describes how violent media can help kids to overcome obstacles. Also, he describes that some
kids that used to be shy become outgoing by reading comics, he makes his point by saying the kids
who reads this comic, get confident by identifying with the superheroes of the stories that they read.
He gave examples of kids that were treated with violent media, but I am not truly sure if this is
effective in kids or not because in the examples that he gave needs more details on how they become
effective in helping these kids with their problems, also this point will be more persuade if the
author supports his examples with information of the parents of these kids that believed violent
media is good. Gerard Jones fails to give more details about how the kids that were treated with
violent media had a positive attitude towards violence. Jones argument on how violent media helped
kids that were deprived of scenes of violence, he argued that were more positive towards these
scenes. Jones gave an example of his son when he was in first grade. He said that his son was afraid
of climbing trees, so he decided to read his son comics of Tarzan who are known for as rich in
combat and bright with flashing knives. He says that after reading this comic for two weeks, his son
gets courage of started climbing trees. Jones is telling the reader that just because his son gets
identify with Tarzan, this comic helps him to overcome the fear of climbing trees. This assumption
with little details makes his essay less persuade because he did no point out the details of how this
comic really helps his son. This example is a good hook to the readers, but the lack on details makes

obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his
relationships, he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki.
STORY – 4.1
Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over
the years. From the fragments I do remember comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and
his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry.
When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is
somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for super–heroes nor to trite concepts that may be
disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic
Party attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should
give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry negatively.
This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy it
seeks to balance self–deprecating jokes with giving its audience a better comprehension of the work
involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired.
Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however

Metamorphosis Grotesque Humor
The graphic novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and adapted by Peter Kuper, depicts the tale
of a man, Gregor Samsa, who awakens from a dream to discover he is a giant insect. Samsa
struggles to comprehend his transformation, while worrying about how his change will affect his
family and how his manager shall respond. Samsa's overall situation is inane, and Kuper's
illustrations provide risible scenes that stresses the ridiculousness, yet tragic story Kafka has created.
By using grotesque humor in The Metamorphosis, Kafka highlights the presence of irony in the
absurdities of daily life and conveys the idea that humor is a component in coping with the horrors
of reality. Kuper's visual interpretations of Kafka's words emphasizes the humorous response of

The narrator speaks in the third person, focusing on Samsa's thoughts and actions and creating the
impression that first hand accounts are being given, despite the narrator being limited to Samsa. The
narrator speaks as underwhelming as Samsa acts: "When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from
disturbing dreams, he found himself transformed..." (992). The narrator is very straightforward, and
this is evidently seen in the opening line, which abruptly throws the reader into the story and has no
preceding context. The suddenness of the opening is bold, but is contrasted by the narrator's casual
tone. The narrator demonstrates a lack of concern for Samsa's predicament, but so does Samsa for
his own problem as reflected in the following pages. Kafka's choice of a nonchalant narrator, in
addition to Samsa's underwhelming actions, conveys a sense of humor because of the passiveness
used in response to the situation that would be interpreted as more serious and provoking of

Comic Story In Literature
Just like traditional literature, comic books can be analyzed through narrative, structure, and plot.
Since the narrative is one of the prime factors in storytelling, comics must have a strong narrative. If
there is no narrative, there is no story. Although, it's important to keep in mind that stories are still
stories, whether you're reading A Tale of two Cities or Watchmen. After all, a good story can be told
in any medium at all. With this in mind, while analyzing parts of the narrative, one can observe that
the nature of the comic book's medium contributes to the storytelling of good stories. Also, comic
books just like literature can be analyzed through plot. While plot is not the end all of narrative, a
poor plot can certainly compromise the value of the narrative. Unlike literature books that can go on
and on, the comic book storyline needs to be told in a limited number of pages, and its executed
through the sequential images. Like it has been said many times before, "a picture says a thousand
words", and in the case of comic books, the pictures tell a story just as well or if not better than a lot
of written words. Take this example from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman: That whole passage
of The Graveyard Book was converted into one page. Even with the absence of words, it's still
possible to get the same feelings of thrill and anticipation just like in a page of book. Since comic
