Nick describes how James Gatz became Jay Gatsby from what he observed and proved throughout the novel. After he dropped out of college, he

action in both novels revolves around unfaithfulness, its effects on the characters, and the results of committing adultery, which prove to be antipode

Hester and Dimmesdale sinned by having sex, Hester was married and Dimmesdale was a reverend. This act of impurity was turned to a positive with
the birth of Pearl, their personal spiritual growth, and their maturity. On the contrary, thelove that Daisy and Gatsby had before their separation was
pure. They were in love for all the right reasons, and stayed in touch while Jay entered the army. However, Daisy then fell in love with money and the

automobile hit and killed Tom's mistress, Myrtle's companion shot Jay Gatsby, and Wilson committed suicide. Most of these murders happened as a

Tom refuses because marrying into a lower social class would develop into even more of a scandal than having a mistress. This corrupted American
dream prevents Tom from openly allowing Myrtle into his life. Old money's highly discriminating nature allows its members to attain superiority, while
this self–serving superiority further enhances their American dream. The attempts of new money to imitate old money remain futile. For example,

humanity as a perfectly honest man. The honesty that Nick attributes to himself must be a nearly perfect one, by dint of both its rarity and its "cardinal"
nature; Nick asserts for himself that he is among the most honest people he has ever encountered. Events in the book, however, do not bear this

The discussion immediately preceding the characterization is most pressing on an interpretation of this self–characterization, as it provides a clear
example of Nick's dishonesty just moments before he claims to be perfectly honest. Nick says of Jordan Baker, "Her grey sun–strained eyes stared
