1997 Film Version Of The Odyssey
In the 1997 film version of The Odyssey the director made several changes from the book, including characterization, settings, the order of events, and
some events are removed or shortened. These changes may have helped the movie move along faster, however the changes were not effective in
accurately portraying The Odyssey and giving the viewer a deep understanding of the characters and their experiences. The way that Odysseus's crew
is killed is changed in the film, the meeting with the Phaiakians is cut short, as well as the meeting with Menelaos. Due to these events being cut short
or changed, the viewers did not get a good understanding of the characters that appear in these events, and what their purpose is in helping the heroes

Comparing the Starts of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet
Comparing the Starts of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classical love story written by the unmatched
author, William Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare's works are considered literary classics, but none are more loved, well known than Romeo and
Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Verona, Italy. The title characters, Romeo and Juliet, are members of two feuding
families. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular

Actress Claire Danes played Juliet. Claire Danes became popular while playing "Angela" on the short–lived television series 'My So Called Life', it
now in reruns on MTV. Leonardo and Claire were the perfect Romeo and Juliet in this brilliant production. Every director has his own vision of
how he sees the scenes of his production playing out. Zeffirelli and Luhrmann had different interpretations of certain scenes of Romeo and Juliet.
One such scene was the famous balcony scene. Zeffirelli stuck to the classical interpretation, while Luhrmann did not. In Zeffirelli's version Juliet
was on the balcony outside her bedroom calling rhetorically, "Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo?" Romeo appears and climbs up the
balcony, and they share a couple of small kisses before he departs. However, in Luhrmann's version of the play, things happen differently. Juliet is
walking by the pool when Romeo startles her and they both fall into the pool. Their conversation then takes place in the pool. They share a several
passionate kisses between getting interrupted by a nosy security guard. Another significant scene that was portrayed differently in the two films was
the suicide scene Zeffirelli's version is once again almost exact to what we read in the book. Romeo sees what he perceives to be a dead Juliet lying in
her family's tomb, and distraught by the sight he drinks poison. When

Comparing the Presentation of War in the Oliver and Branagh Film Versions of Henry the Fifth Many films have been made of Shakespeare's play,
"Henry V". The two I am analysing are by Laurence Olivier (1944) and Kenneth Branagh (1988). They are made for very different audiences with
different aims. Although they seem very different, in some ways, Branagh's version used many techniques of Olivier's. Both productions were
performed to communicate the director's feelings on war to the audience and were performed when war had played a part in recent history. Olivier's
version is very pro–war in that he glorifies war but at the same time it lacks realism so that it was not too close to the reality that... Show more content

The spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture." This is intended to make the audience feel proud to be fighting for England
as their ancestors did. Being produced during the Second World War, many of the viewers may have had relatives out in battle. They had no clear idea
of the reality due to the lack of technology and communication. The light–hearted view of the battles reassured the audience. It is shown very
patriotically and heroically so the audiences would feel good about the war and have felt proud to be English. The French in this film may have
represented the Germans in the war as the enemy. In the battle the enemy is shown as evil to make the audience feel they're doing the right thing
fighting evil. Branagh's film was set many years later when society was more immune to shocking films and television programmes. He presents a
dynamic king duped into fighting a bloody, vicious war whose victory is undone within a generation. Olivier's version is quite pro–war whereas
Branagh's version seems very anti–war. This film portrays his negative attitude to war by emphasising the realism of the battle. The gore and realistic
fighting will have shocked the audience and may have allowed them to consider the conditions in Vietnam. For example in the battle of Agincourt, the
close–up individual fighting will have made

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet And Franco Zeffireli 's Film...
William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Franco Zeffireli's film version of the story are different in many ways, but the basic characters and basic plot
remain the same. Franco Zeffirelli's screenplay is an edited, re–vamped version of the original tragedy in which lines are cut and scenes are modified.
Additionally, Zeffirelli modifies Shakespeare's ghost scenes and uses narrative and film techniques to both create an overall suspenseful atmosphere and
generate empathetic feelings towards Hamlet. The various changes made by Zeffirelli are interesting, and attempting to analyze the decisions made by
the film director allowed for not only a deeper understanding of the film, but of the story Hamlet in general. In Act One of the play ... Show more

In act one, scene one, line 28, the guards state that they have seen something frightening: "What, has this thing appeared again tonight?" (1.1.28). It
is here that the audience is able to witness the ghosts, particularly when one guard says, "Look where it comes again" (1.1.49). The ghosts now
appear on stage. Horatio, a man of logic and reason, is also scared and admits that, "It harrows me with fear and wonder," thereby allowing the
audience to learn that the former king, father of Hamlet, is dead. There is a ghost clothed in his armor strolling the castle's battlements all through the
night. The barricades in the ghost scene of the film are foggy, filled with moonlight, and dark. The setting gives the scene an even eerier feel, giving
the viewer the idea that what is about to take place could be frightening, suspenseful, or spooky in some way. The icy clouds of breath hovering
throughout the shot chill the viewer. The sky is empty, creating an isolated feeling. It is obvious that this scene takes place at night, when the ghosts
are able to freely roam; however, the background lighting indicates that day is approaching, and that the ghost will soon have to return to wherever it
stays during the day.
In the film, the ghosts do not appear as soon as they do in the play. Instead, Zeffirelli rearranges the order of some of the scenes. Occasionally, he even
adds scenes that were not present in Shakespeare's play. The first scene of the film is the king's funeral – a

A Comparison Of The Glass Menagerie
While reading Tennessee Williams play, "The Glass Menagerie", readers are drawn into the drama and disaster that is the Wingfield family. There
were several different film and television versions of this play done thru the years from 1950 to 1987. After watching several different adaptations, Paul
Newman's film adaptation in 1987 is extremely faithful to the written version. Focusing on plot, setting, and character development the audience is
introduced to a family with an austere future structured around a series of abandonments, difficulty accepting reality and the impossibility of true
escape. Both versions begin with a narrator looking back at the past and setting the stage for what memories will follow. The story is told in hindsight
by Tom. It begins with Laura and Amanda waiting at the dining table for Tom to join them, so they can say grace and begin the meal, showing the
audience, the family is very close and depend on each other. Throughout, readers also see constant conflict between the mother and children, but never
conflict between the siblings. For instance, when Williams writes after an argument between Tom and Amanda; "AMANDA: "I won't speak to you
until you apologize!" (25) then the next morning Amanda sending Laura out, so she can talk to Tom privately to discuss Laura's future. Trying to

Comparing Two Cinderella Versions Of Disney Films

all based on the same ancient story. Step mother, step sisters, Cinderella marries the love of her life, you get the idea. Yet, each individual story has its
own unique touch to make it stand out just a little bit more than the previous story. The twoCinderella stories that I'm going to be comparing are two
Disney films. The first one I am going to discuss was released in early spring of 1950, called "Cinderella". The second story is a remake called,
"Another Cinderella Story" released in 2008. Both films based on the same story line, yet completely different. In the 1950 Disney film
"Cinderella", she talks to animals. Birds wake her each day, mice are her best friends, she feeds the chickens and the dog as well. Cinderella has to
attend to every possible need that her step sisters or step mother asks. She does their laundry, makes the food, cleans the floors and windows, makes
their beds, washes the cat and feeds each animal. Anything you would do on a regular basis, Cinderella has to do. Cinderella doesn't leave the house,
she doesn't have friends that are humans. The way people dress and talk is way different from today's culture. The women wear big dresses and the ...

Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars
It is no easy task to create a work – through writing or film – that has an impact on society. In writing, one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic
that will have an impact on the readers. One must also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for
the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in combination with a fitting musical score in order to give
the viewer of the film the full experience. There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to create
such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson's novel Snow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reporters covering Kabuo's trial, and found himself tempted to ignore the ethics of journalism taught to him by his father in order to satiate his
bitterness toward Hatsue for ending their childhood romance. In delving deeper into the issues that deal with Kabuo's trial, the effects of war, and the
romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue, Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy.
In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be used to convey a story line. Guterson went back

predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated
San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests
could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in
twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto's trial was further evidence to such a

Portrayal of Ophelia in the two film versions of Hamlet
Hamlet is an acknowledging Shakespearean play that was later filmed in 1990 by Franco Zeffirelli and in 1996 by Kenneth Branagh. Both these
directors interpret the play differently adding unique twists and turns of their own to help focus on one thing than the other. In their contrasting films,
these two directors depict the character of Ophelia very differently. Through Zeffirelli's film, Ophelia, played byHelena Bonham Carter is portrayed as a
dreamy, naive, childish character, however in Branagh 's version; Kate Winslet portrays Ophelia as a more mature, sensible and strong willed
character. These different portrayals of Ophelia can be further analyzed through cinematography, set and costume designs and through the actor
themselves. Firstly, the different interpretation of Ophelia is shown through the cinematography of the two films. Cinematography refers to the
camera movement and angles. Zeffirelli chooses to make many of Ophelia's shots filmed from above, reinforcing Ophelia's character small helpless
and under control. Whereas in Branagh's most of the scenes of are front, eye level shots. These shots show Ophelia like anyone else in the movie.
Another difference in shots can be seen in the "mad scene" part, when Ophelia goes mad after the death of Polonius, her father. In Zeffirelli's film the
scene is the camera tends to follow Ophelia around showing

Review of the 2005 Film version of Pride and Prejudice Essay
For any great reader, it is known that the 'book is always better than the movie.' Try as they may, moviemakers can never fully capture the author's
magic from the original text. I am happy to say that this is not the case in the 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen was a fabulous
writer and her novels have captured the attention of booklovers for centuries. The screenwriter, Deborah Moggach, takes Austen's slightly rambling
story and polishes it up and makes it easy for modern day people to understand.
In the days when fathers were forbidden, by law, to leave property to their daughters, two sisters, Elizabeth and Jane Bennet are being pressured to

Through a series of misunderstandings, Jane and Charles are separated at the great dismay of the whole family. The main focus however, is Elizabeth
and whom she chooses to marry. Many undercurrents and sub plots occur in the story. And with a house full of girls, how could it be different?
The costume and set designs in the movie are astoundingly realistic. Instead of looking like costumes and sets, the clothing looks like things a person
would have worn or lived in during that period of time. While other versions of this same novel have elaborate costumes and fancy clothes, the
costumes in the 2005 version are much simpler, which makes it seem much more real. Most of the filming took place in locations which were around
when the novel was written, which eliminates the modernism of the movie. Unspoiled beauty was the order of the day in this version of Pride and
Prejudice.
Kiera Knightly, who played Elizabeth Bennet, could also be described as an unspoiled beauty. Her acting is superb without being overly perfect.
Other wonderful actors include Mathew Macfayden, Rosamund Pike, and Simon Woods as Darcy, Jane and Bingly, respectively. Throughout the
whole film, an impression of not trying too hard is given off, which keeps it fresh, and the acting is no different. The actors know who their roles are
and played them as real people, not dramatic overdone characters.

Race in Five Film Versions of Shakespeare's Othello Essay...
William Shakespeare's Othello is only moderately interested in questions of race and racism. For Shakespeare, Othello's blackness was mainly a plot
device. Though the bard did demonstrate concerns about racial and religious prejudice, in Othello and The Merchant of Venice, his interest in the
tragedy of the Moor was principally psychological. For Shakespeare and his contemporary audience, Othello was about jealousy, hatred, and
vindictiveness.
The play has aged well, as have all Shakespeare's plays, but not, perhaps, in the ways Shakespeare's contemporaries would have predicted. In
Shakespeare's time, it would have been acceptable for Othello to kill his wife, had she truly been unfaithful. What made Othello a tragic criminal to ...

Douglas Brode states, "Wells was fully aware that Shakespeare had been a pre–Freudian psychologist" (154). Brode adds that, in the early 1950s when
the psychological film was at its peak, Othello served Welles' interest in Freudian psychology (154–155).
According to Michael MacLiammoir, who plays Iago to Welles' lead, Welles believed Iago was impotent and a closet homosexual who married
Emilia, played by Faye Compton, as his cover so he could pass for heterosexual. In his published diary of the making of the film, Put Money in
Thy Purse, MacLiammoir goes on to say that Welles' Iago has a hero's crush on Othello, and becomes upset and jealous as a hurt lover when
Othello gives a promotion to Cassio, played by Michael Laurence, instead of him. To add insult to injury, Othello is rumored to have slept with a
frustrated Emilia. In Welles version, both the director and Iago buy this motive. When Iago sees Othello and Cassio, played by Derek Jacobi, joined
together as brothers, it is too much for Iago. According to Brode, Welles was adamant that MacLiammoir, appear, with the help of makeup and
performance, to be castrated (155).
Welles shot Othello on location in North Africa and Europe, and his use of camera angles and the outdoor scenery is striking, as Jack F. Forgens notes:
Shapes on the screen are less and less easily recognizable: compositions are tense, full of diagonals and faces are obscured, crossed with shadows, or

Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations and readings can be made. This is particularly
true of his comedies, where the light–hearted humour is often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the
director – in the cinematic context – to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are suppressed. This variance in
interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare's comedies, Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night and
Kenneth Branagh's A Much Ado About Nothing ['Much Ado']. Although both films can to an extent be seen as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily Malvolio. It is essentially Malvolio's ultimate
narcissism that allows the other characters to easily plot his demise .
Nunn's adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the 'professional clown' proving persuasive because the fool
presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a
game, that lovers often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and comedy of the film. However
Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious
issues and at times, the deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley's moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as a man who lives
alone away from Olivia's house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the characters and provides some telling insights. This is illustrated
when he shows Olivia why "take away the fool" could mean take away the lady," arguing not only to save his job but also out of a deep compassion for
Olivia's grief over her brother's death, and a desire to show why she need not commit

A Comparison Of The Tell Tale Heart And The Tell Tale Heart
To begin with, the Tell Tale Heart is very odd and suspenseful. It and the rewritten version are very different, and though they are both very
descriptive, only one can help a reader understand the plot more. The original would be better because it tells you the narrator's thoughts about why
he wants to kill the old man, while the rewritten version, no matter what point of view, happens after the murder and would not help the reader
understand the thoughts of the narrator. Some ways the original Tell Tale Heart and the rewritten version are similar are the mood and the plot. The
mood of the stories are both suspenseful and erie and build up tension throughout the story. According to (Poes) text it states, "I arose and argued
about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations, but the noise steadily increased." According to (Johnson's) text it states,"We talked a little
longer, and then suddenly he gripped his head, and doubled over. Something was wrong." This quotation also built up suspense because the man
across from the policemen fell over and made the policemen nervous about whether or not the man was the murderer. Another thing that makes both
versions is the plot. The plot of both stories are in the old man's house in the 1800's. According to (Poes) text it states, "And then, when my head was
well in the room, I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye." The narrator was in the old man's bed room, waiting for the
perfect time to commit the murder. According to (Johnson's) text it states, "We went all around the large house, and saw nothing suspicious or
anything that could have caused a murder. The man pulled up three wooden chairs, and let us sit and we chatted amongst ourselves, while he sat
across from us." The policemen sat in the exact place where the corpse was under the floorboards, and never noticed until the man showed them. The
stories also had a lot of things that were different from each other. Some of those ways were the pacing of the stories and the character development
throughout the stories. According to (Poe's) text, the pacing of the stories were very different because the original versions sentences became very
short around the end

The lighting of the scenes were similar, as both films portrayed the scene as lively and exciting at the beginning. The only difference to the lighting
is what was used to create the light. Franco Zeffirelli used traditional items such as candles and torches. Baz Luhrmann used modern items such as
chandeliers and fireworks. The start of the party was similar in both films. Even though Franco Zeffirelli's version of the scene started noisily, Baz
Luhrmann's was noisier. Another similarity were the camera angle shots. Both directors used a variety of camera shots, especially close up.
Luhrmann's production, the close ups were helping build tension by showing both families feelings and facial expressions. Throughout the masked
ball scene, there are a number of close ups on key characters. For example, when Tybalt recognises Romeo at the party and when Romeo and Juliet
first set eyes on each other across the fish tank. Franco also uses close ups at these points of the scene. The setting of the two films are also very
contrasting. Zeffirelli's production was set in Tuscany and Umbria because they were very authentic cities, which were a lot like the setting of
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, would have been. However, the Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet was set in Mexico, Miami beach. This was

The Disney Film Version Of Alice
The Disney film version of Alice in wonderland when compared to the The novel Alice in wonderland by Carroll Lewis, expresses a variety of
changes which can alter ideological values. Disney is well known for taking classic stories and fabricating them for a wider audience. This form of
fabrication can be beneficial, especially in regards to creating various messages that are intended to be perceived by audiences. Other instances the
changes are small and less note worthy. The images left out by Disney alter the ideologies that are expressed. Much of the Disney film version is
quite consistent with the book, with the addition of certain aspects added from Alice through the looking glass. One crucial alteration added to the
Disney film version is the implication that Alice created wonderland; "why in my world cats and rabbits would reside in fancy houses (Disney)."
As seen in the first scene when Alice is singing to herself. This crucial addition to the Disney film version of Alice in wonderland changes overall
themes of the film. It introduces the stresses Alice is dealing with, and her strategy to cope with these strategies. Alice uses wonderland as a form of
escapism to avoid social constructs, which ultimately allows for growth. The pressures of society can apply an overwhelming strain on individuals.
In particular, girls. The visual appearance of Alice in the Disney film version is slightly altered from the novel. In the Disney film Alice appears to be

Howard are both sane, accomplished men with successful families. The actors' facial expressions portray additional information about characters
not explicitly stated in the written version of the play. Willy constantly looks disoriented or distracted, and he can never seem to focus on anybody.
This gives the impression of a disarrayed mind in a deteriorating state. During the requiem, Linda has a terrible look of grief on her face when she is
kneeling over Willy's grave. The vivid look of misery on her face is more impactful than simply reading about her sorrow. These seemingly small
details create a big difference between the written and video versions of the

A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless Essay
A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless
The features I will look for in both films for comparison is setting, location, lighting, costumes, props, camera angles, dialogue and weather. Emma is
set in the early 20th century and Clueless in the 1990's. The director changed the era to refer to the fact that girls nowadays are more mature than
young women in the early 20th century.
The diversity between the locations in both films is very minor. In Clueless it is set in Beverly Hills in America and inEmma is set in England. England
in the early 20th century is largely countryside with prosperous houses, and a rigid hierarchy. Beverly Hills is quite comparable to England as it is rich

This is also a casual place where the teenagers of this film hang out. Settings from both films imply wealth and that both characters are spoilt.
The lighting in the film Emma is dull in the interior setting this gives a romantic atmosphere, and makes her look as if she has a smooth
complexion, as the main light source are candles, which are subtle and did not show blemishes like modern lighting does. These added to her
beauty and enact desirability to men. Other means of light in the interior settings are also subtle as there is no electricity; light sources are
windows, and fireplaces. They also used rich colours in their furnishing that increased the darkness of the film. But in the exterior settings the
lighting is brighter, but this is natural and subtle lighting, for example the weather. The director does this to create the scenes to look natural. There
is a great contrast between Emma and Clueless as technology has improved and we no longer have to live in darkness. So there is extra lighting in
Clueless indoors. Also because Cher's house is modern it has neutral colours that repeal a lot of light and makes the rooms look bigger, unlike Emma.
Out doors, like Emma, is bright and natural and is often sunny. The darker setting is in the party. The darker light gives off a more alluring side of you,
which you would want in a party, as in the intimate settings in Emma.

Comparing Opening Scenes of Two Film Versions of Great Expectations
The purpose of this essay will be to analyse and compare two versions of the opening scenes of Great Expectations. The first was produced by David
Lean in 1994 and the second is an adaptation produced in 1997 by the BBC. In particular, observation will focus on how effective each is at creating
an atmosphere of tension with regards to media techniques, sound effects and other film features.
Right at the beginning of David Leans version of Great Expectations a book appears which starts to be read by a narrator, the narrator is Pip grown up.
This reassures the viewer that Pip survives his eventful child hood. After about a minute ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He looks at the trees swaying and the camera gets a close up of one tree which has an image of a dead face which represents the grave. Lighting is also
used on the tree.
The audience can see and here exactly what is making Pip uneasy, and should begin to experience some of the fear which is obviously affecting him.
The convict then jumps out on the left side of the screen and the brain automatically starts from the left hand side because people read from the left
hand side so as soon as he jumps out you will immediately react.
It is at this point that Pip finally runs into Magwitch. David Lean builds up the tension very well here, by keeping the camera on Pip constantly,
following him as he gets up and runs away. This means we do not see Magwitch until Pip runs into him, which is a great shot for the audience.
You can see that the convicts clothes are very ragged compared to Pips who looks smart and tidy. You can also tell by the convict's dirty face that he
is poor and you can tell he is hungry when he tips Pip upside down and starts to eat his apple
Most of the music in David Leans version seems to be played by an orchestra. The music is very smartly done. When there is tension the music starts
to speed up or there is no music at all. For example, when pip is grabbed by the convict the

The Importance of the First Scene in the Film Version of...
Romeo and juliet written in 1595, is one of the most famous plays of the 16th century, set in Verona. It was cleverly written by William
Shakespeare, who is one of the most renowned writers of all time and the play was later produced as movie in 1996 staring Leonardo Dicaprio and
Claire Danes. The play is still popular as it contains universal themes of love and hate that can still be related to today.
One of the importances of the first scene of the play is to introduce the audience to the majority of the lead charecters such as Romeo and Juliet,
Benvolio and Tybalt, Sampson and Gregory, Lord and Lady Capulet, Lord and Lady Montague and Prince. Along with the different themes and use of
language, which varies from crude to poetic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

play. Sampson and Gregory are clearly shown to be the better and more civil charecters as they The language used is insulting such as "A dog of the
house of Montague moves me." which basically means anything from the house Montague even a dog, they have no respect for therefore they wouldn't
move out of it's way and would let it walk in the dirt. It's significant that the fight between the Montagues and Capulets starts first among the servants as
it shows that both houses have lower status charecters in that share the same hatred for the opposite houses as the higher status charecters do.
Shakespeares use of language is clever as you have to look within what the Capulets said to find the true insult. The fight between the two houses grabs
the attention of the audience straight away with it's witty use of language and action. It also starts with the question that lingers throughout the rest of
the play which is why exactly have they hated eachother for so long and so strongly?
All this builds up tension and the crowd are constantly on the edge of their seats waiting for the events to happen that they have been told about, the
fight is witnessed by the prince who decides anymore fighting will end in exile if they carry on. In a way the Prince is

The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron's Film Version of Great Expectations
In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two famous directors' film versions of 'Great
Expectations'. The two directors are David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean's version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron's
because Lean was the first director to actually direct 'Great Expectations'. This made it more difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the
film up to date by making the film more modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel 'Great Expectations'. David Lean had
directed his version of 'Great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving the audience clues about what the film will include, such as an
ominous atmosphere and scenes of violence and gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film
actually contains, whether it is horror or drama.
David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is
different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the
audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is actually played has a joyful and happy mood,
which encourages the audience to think that the film is a non–violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame
and grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron deliberately did this to shock and alarm the
audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an explicit and up–tempo atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film.
On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening

Comparing Film Versions Of Hamlet And Branagh's Hamlet
Hamlet, a tragedy by William Shakespeare shows a lot of adaptations to movies. Hamlet by Mel Gibson (1990) and Kenneth Branagh (1996) interpret
and portray the play by Shakespeare in different ways. The two film versions of Mel Gibson and Kenneth Branagh of Act IV of Hamlet have many
differences and similarities. Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet is seen covering most of the original text of Shakespeare's play of Hamlet unlike the
Mel Gibson version which omits many scenes and dialogues. The film version of Hamlet featuring Kenneth Branagh is a more successful production of
Shakespeare's play according to the setting and time period, cast and editing.
The difference between the costumes, scenery and setting shows how modern the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet is than the Mel Gibson
version of Hamlet. One of the difference between the two films is the setting and time period. Mel Gibson version of Hamlet is set in a dark and
medieval time castle. Kenneth Branagh's movie of Hamlet was set in 19th century making the setting of the castle more of a luxurious modern palace.
The lighting of the movie plays a major role in the production of the film because it demonstrates emotions and feelings from the characters. For
instance, in Hamlet starring Mel Gibson the lighting was adjusted to make the scenes darker to show sadness and grief. According to props and
costumes the Kenneth Branagh version are very modern and unique while Mel Gibson version of hamlet costumes are more old

location in Verona and is set in the 15th century, when the story of Romeo and Juliet was meant to happen. Its opening prologue is very plain and
simple, there are just two long shots and the voiceovers voice speaks very slowly. The first shot is a long shot of medieval Verona on a misty
morning, the camera pans around to the river and tilts up and zooms in slowly into the sun, the name 'William Shakespeare' then appears below it – this

stage. In the human world, Noble uses different colours to show different colours in different rooms. For instance, he used blue to show
springtime, or when the male characters are being unfaithful. Black, to show evil, red to show dram and sex, e.g. the scene where Titania lures
bottom in to her bower, the bed, cushions and blankets are all red. He also uses yellow and orange to show a play within a play. In the film,
different rooms are painted these different colours to show the mood within the room. However, the fairy's clothes are very bright, and make the
fairy world look a little brighter. Each of the fairies seems to have a different outfit, based on one colour, but Oberon has very dark clothes. Camera

camera shows a medium shot of the country house, followed by shots of activity, tables being laid, and food being prepared, then, the camera goes into
close–up mode and it picks out various items of food, and then theseus. Then, the camera pans across the landscape. This gives you an idea of where

Romanticism in the Film Version of The Big Sleep
In Raymond Chandler's novel The Big Sleep, he presents two sisters, Vivian and Carmen. These women become the central characters, aside from
Philip Marlowe, and they control much of the action in the novel. The 1946 film version of The Big Sleep, however, manipulatesChandler's characters
considerably. Aside from playing with the dialogue of the novel, the screen–writers change the very essences of Vivian and Carmen. Perhaps it is the
casting of the film which forces changes from the novel, or perhaps the Production Code keeps the writers from developing the women in the way that
Chandler does; either way, the film version of The Big Sleep makes the story romantic and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Chandler 19)
In the novel, Marlowe doesn't care for Vivian anymore than she does for him. A fact that is hammered home throughout the novel in the dialogue
between these two characters.
In the movie, however, there is a distinct attraction between the characters, purposely created to capitalize on the real–life affair between Humphrey
Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Director Howard Hawks was charged with creating a movie vehicle for these stars as a result of their incredible chemistry
from the earlier movie To Have and Have Not. Bogart and Bacall were phenomenally well–matched on–screen and off, and Hawks decided that The
Big Sleep was the best film to display their chemistry. In order to do so, the script needed to be revised from the novel. The novel calls for Marlowe
and Vivian to go their separate ways, with Marlowe discretely threatening to reveal Vivian's secrets and Vivian shattered and responsible for Carmen's
deranged life. Hawks asked William Faulkner to create a screenplay that would maximize the drama while maintaining an air of romance between
Bogart and Bacall. The script that resulted concluded with Marlowe and Vivian together, presumably heading off into the sunset towards an implied
marriage; the traditional happy ending.
The character of Vivian that comes out of Faulkner's script is softer and more dynamic than Chandler's Vivian. Faulkner's sings in a gambling

Movie And Film Version Of To Kill A Mockingbird
The film version of To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), which stars Gregory Peck as Atticus and Mary Badham as Scout, is as much a classic as the novel
itself. (The film received eight Academy Awards nominations and netted awards for Best Actor, Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another
Medium, and Best Art Direction – Set Decoration, Black and White.)
Ideally, a novel and its film version complement each other, which, on many levels, is the case withTo Kill a Mockingbird. However, film can
accomplish things that novels can't, and vice versa. Likewise, film has limitations that a novel doesn't. This essay explores some of the differences
between To Kill a Mockingbird, the film and the novel.
Narration
By its nature, film is a visual medium, which makes a first–person story difficult to tell. To have Scout narrating throughout the film as she does in the
book would prove distracting, so Scout as narrator is only presented to set the mood of a scene in the film. As a result, viewers don't get a strong sense
of Scout's first–person narration as they do in the book; instead, they simply notice the childlike perspective portrayed in the story. (The film uses
music to help reinforce the child's point–of–view. The music is very elementary, and much of the score is composed of single notes without chords or
embellishments.)
Because the narration is not as straightforward in the film, the film seems to shift more to Jem's experiences. For example, Jem finds all the articles in

Comparing Film Versions Of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most tragic love stories ever written. It was written by William Shakespeare in 1594. There have been many remakes
of the play such as Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, Gnomeo and Juliet directed by Kelly Asbury in 2011, and many school plays
reenacting it. The film version by Baz Luhrmann and the script by William Shakespeare can be compared using three scenes: the balcony scene,
Tybalt's death scene, and the final suicide scene. The balcony scene in Act 2, scene 2 is a major scene both in the film and the script. In the script
Juliet never comes down from her balcony, but in the film they are pool–side together and make contact with each other. They eventually fall into the

In the film, Romeo and Tybalt end up driving cars, but in the script they are on ground the whole time. Before actually killing Tybalt, Romeo
injures him very bad in the film, but not in the movie. Finally, Tybalt is killed with a gun in the film, whereas in the movie he is killed by a dagger.
The final suicide scene in Act 5, scene 3 is the greatest scene in both the film and the script. In the script, Juliet's body was in the Capulet tomb, but
in the film Juliet's body was in a church. There were lit candles surrounding Juliet's body and lighting up the church in the film. Paris was not there
for Romeo to kill in the film like he was in the script. In the film, Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo drink the poison and die, but when she wakes up
in the script he is already dead. Instead of using Romeo's dagger like in the script, Juliet kills herself with Romeo's gun in the film. As one can see,
the film and the script can be compared using many different scenes. The play was more tragic than the film and had a very clear context. The film
had more sound effects and visuals whereas in the script you had to imagine what everyone would look like and picture what all the scenes would be
like. Romeo and Juliet is the greatest love story ever written, although it ended in a tragedy. "For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and

Being the first African American Cinderella and a remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1957 musical, Cinderella, the story's plot is very similar
to the 1950 Disney animated film. Cinderella stands up for what she believes in much more than she does in previous films. An example of this
would be when Cinderella speaks to her stepsisters towards the opening of the film, as both stepsisters try to find out if a particular hat looks better
on one of them, but Cinderella makes it known that the hat isn't flattering on either of them. Cinderella makes comments like this throughout the film,
but never in a rude or demeaning way. When she expresses remarks in this instance, she says it in a calm and respectful manner. So, although her
character is a bit spiced up, she is still extremely kind. Cinderella also comes to realization that there are some things that have to be worked for
rather than sitting just dreaming and wishing for things to fall into place as she states in the film, "You know what the problem is with most people?
They sit around wishing for something to happen instead of doing something about it (Wilson 2015)." Although there are the same gentle characters in

A Comparison of Film Techniques of Two Film Versions of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Mary Shelley wrote her novel 'Frankenstein' when she was just a young girl of nineteen. She wrote it in 1816, when she went on holiday with her
friend, Byron. Byron was already a famous poet, and it was him who suggested that whilst they were away, they should both write a ghost story. At
the time it was just a way of passing time and having fun for Mary Shelley, but little did she know that her story would become famous worldwide.
Many adaptations of 'Frankenstein' have been made for cinema in the 20th century. Two of the most significant being those studied in this assignment.

In 1930 French–born director Robert Florey was hired by Universal Studios to make the new horror film 'Frankenstein' but he did not satisfy
producer Carl Laemmle Jr, and so Director James Whale was hired to replace Florey. Whale, an acclaimed Director, chose 44 year old Boris Karloff as
the monster and together with make–up specialist Jack Pierce they created the most influential horror image of all times. Boris Karloff's career was
launched by the huge success of this film. However, many changes had been made in Whale's version from the original novel.
In contrast with this, 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' was released in 1994, sixty three years after James Whale's version, and unlike his version, it
followed very strictly Mary Shelley's original plot. Kenneth Branagh, who also starred in the film as Dr. Frankenstein, directed the film. Branagh is
also a British born Director, with a distinguished career in theatre, both as an actor and a director.
Branagh is also famously known for adapting Shakespeare's plays into films. "Mary Shelleys Frankenstein" was filmed in Shepperton studios in

Two Film Versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classic love story written by the incomparable William Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare's works are considered
literary classics, but none are more loved than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Elizabethan England.
The title characters Romeo and Juliet are members of two feuding families, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic
ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular film versions portray two very different styles of this one play. Zeferelli's Romeo and
Juliet was made in the 1970s, and is the film version most commonly shown in high school classrooms. The newest film version of this play is Baz

One such scene was the infamous balcony scene. Zeferelli stuck to the classical interpretation, while Luhrmann did not. In Zeferelli's version Juliet
was on the balcony outside her bedroom calling rhetorically, "Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo?" Romeo appears and climbs up the
balcony, and they share a couple of small kisses before he departs. However, in Luhrmanns version of the play, events occurred slightly differently.
Juliet is walking by the pool, when Romeo startles her and they both fall in the pool. Their conversation then takes place in the pool. In between
getting interrupted by a nosy security guard they share several passionate kisses.
Another significant scene that was portrayed differently in the two versions was the suicide scene. Zeferelli's version is once again almost exact
to what we read in the book. Romeo sees what he perceives to be a dead Juliet lying in her family's tomb, and distraught by the sight he drinks
poison. When Juliet awakens from her sleep she finds Romeo dead, and stabs herself with his knife. In Luhrmanns version Romeo goes to the
church where Juliet is laid out for her funeral. He also sees what he perceives to be a dead Juliet and drinks poison. When Juliet awakens from her
sleep she finds out Romeo has swallowed poison and is dying. The main difference lies in the fact that we are led to believe that maybe he will see her

Connections Between Book and Film Versions
In evaluating the film adaptation of Island of Lost Souls the film is an intermediate adaption of the novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The definition of
an intermediate adaption is, "Some elements of the story are kept in the film, other elements are dropped, and still more elements are added" (Desmond
44). The film has many of the same narrative elements but the addition of the female character Ruth creates a distinct change in the film. This
additional character of Ruth allows the film to have a more romantic or sexual aspect, which helps to draw in more viewers. Since this film is an
intermediate adaptation the director is better able to create a more appealing story for the viewers. One of the opening scenes in the movie is after
Edward Parker is rescued and he yells out for his fiancГ© Ruth. Parker makes a request of Montgomery to, "send a message" (Arlen). This is a very
important scene as this creates a reason why Ruth is on the island in the film. Parker's first thoughts are of his fiancГ© and getting word to her that he

Comparing Hamlet And Gregory Doran's Film Version Of The Play
William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Gregory Doran's film version of the play, have the same characters and main story, the plot is the same and the
same actions occur, however, like any other movie based on a play or book has its differences.
The atmosphere that Doran uses in his movie its completely different to the one in the play, while Shakespeare's Hamlet occurs during the late
medieval period, Doran puts a modern spin in the film, by adding modern day situations and places, as well as the way the characters are dressed, the
modern day objects they use, or the surveillance cameras that are located in the castle which allows to see what is happening around, suggesting a
feeling of always being watched and "controlled".

What are Version Control Systems? Essay
The data, its versions, and all the information associated with each version are stored in a location called repository. There are four repository models
commonly employed in Version Control systems. The earlier version of Version Control systems kept repository local– the person making the changes
and the repository would be on the same machine . There are also examples of repository located on a shared folder which allows users from within
a local area network to collaborate (4). Later on, client/server models became popular where the central repository is located on a server and all
clients are able to read and submit changes. In the recent years, distributed repository systems are getting increasing interest as... Show more content on

If the update contains changes that would conflict with the local changes, local copy goes into conflict state. The changes on the local copy needs to
be reviewed and should be marked as resolved after complying with the changes of the repository.
The changes may be stored in the repository using various models. The simplest model is snapshots, where a complete copy of the data set is stored
for each version. For certain data types, this method is still employed – such as in the version control of images, binary media where determination of
atomic data unit is not necessarily well defined. For data sets that have a well defined atomic data unit, the most common method is changesets
(deltas), where only the modified atomic data units are stored with each version. This, in most cases, provides significant saving in repository storage

A Comparison of the Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet
A Comparison of the Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet I have been studying the prologue to 'Romeo and Juliet' written by the magnificent
playwright, William Shakespeare sometime between 1594 and 1596. Still globally acknowledged, it has been restyled by many directors for both
stage and screen. Shakespeare starts his play with a prologue: an introduction to a play or other piece of writing. The prologue sets the tone of the
theatrical production; it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sir Lawrence Olivier reads Zeffirelli's narration. The tone of the narrator sounds calm, masculine and very traditional. It sounds like a bedtime story
trying to soothe the audience. Zeffirelli focuses on familiarising his audience with the setting of the film. In stark contrast, an African American female
reads Luhrmann's narration. The TV changes channel to a news report, immediately recognised as the prologue of the play. The verbal style of the
film is set as the female anchorwoman reads the prologue's original text in the tone of a journalistic contemporary reportage in which we are
accustomed to hearing the news of tragedies in modern life. From the onset, Luhrmann makes his spectators aware of his modern setting and the fact
that he is making a clear–cut modern movie. The prologue is read slowly, giving Luhrmann's spectators enough time to chew on what is said. The
way it is read and directed draws the audience slowly as the camera zooms in on the reporter, wearing red to symbolise the blood shed during the feud
between the 'two households'. There is a contrast in her background, the Shakespearean language and her American accent. The prologue is marked as
news broadcast on television, a unique way of narrating. It sets the scene of the play by illustrating the violence between the

The Historical Trauma of Slavery in the Film Version of Toni Morrison's Beloved
The film Beloved was released in 1998 to mixed reviews. The movie, based on Toni Morrison's novel, tells a ghost story from an African American
perspective. It takes place only a few years after the abolishment of slavery, with the traumatic scars still fresh and unable to be healed. In the film the
protagonist, Sethe, is revisited by the ghost of the daughter she murdered eighteen years earlier. I shall argue that her daughter, Beloved, is the
embodiment of the trauma of the African American experience of slavery. In order to support this claim, I will explain what constitutes historical trauma
in film, how historical trauma is specifically represented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of the critics were writing for the public sphere, which is characterized by Inch and Warnick as containing arguments that are "intended for public or
general audiences" (52). In this case, the argument for the public sphere is directed toward movie–going audiences. The argument field is the
evaluation of films during the 1990's, and could more specifically include historical films created in the 1990's. The argument field is an important
point to my argument because historical film contains many debatable points, all of which will be discussed after the reviews are summarized.
The critics felt that the movie did not make a smooth enough transition from the novel, and felt that the overall content was too complicated. Richard
Blake from America argued, "the complexity of the novel becomes simply confusion in the film" (1). Blake was also critical of the director, Jonathan
Demme, and said, "[h]is use of sepia–tinted film stock and oblique camera angles calls attention to itself and distracts from the characters" (2). The
article Beloved It's Not, from the Economist also responded negatively to the movie. The author states that "[t]he main problem is the film itself: most
audiences are not eager to endure nearly three hours of a cerebral film with an original storyline featuring supernatural themes, murder, rape and
slavery" (2). John Simon of the National Review also dislikes the complications of

1997 Film Version Of The Odyssey Changes

  • 1. 1997 Film Version Of The Odyssey In the 1997 film version of The Odyssey the director made several changes from the book, including characterization, settings, the order of events, and some events are removed or shortened. These changes may have helped the movie move along faster, however the changes were not effective in accurately portraying The Odyssey and giving the viewer a deep understanding of the characters and their experiences. The way that Odysseus's crew is killed is changed in the film, the meeting with the Phaiakians is cut short, as well as the meeting with Menelaos. Due to these events being cut short or changed, the viewers did not get a good understanding of the characters that appear in these events, and what their purpose is in helping the heroes of the ... Comparing the Starts of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Comparing the Starts of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classical love story written by the unmatched author, William Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare's works are considered literary classics, but none are more loved, well known than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Verona, Italy. The title characters, Romeo and Juliet, are members of two feuding families. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular film versions render two very different styles of the Shakespearean classic. Claire Danes became popular while playing "Angela" on the short–lived television series 'My So Called Life', it now in reruns on MTV. Leonardo and Claire were the perfect Romeo and Juliet in this brilliant production. Every director has his own vision of how he sees the scenes of his production playing out. Zeffirelli and Luhrmann had different interpretations of certain scenes of Romeo and Juliet. One such scene was the famous balcony scene. Zeffirelli stuck to the classical interpretation, while Luhrmann did not. In Zeffirelli's version Juliet was on the balcony outside her bedroom calling rhetorically, "Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo?" Romeo appears and climbs up the balcony, and they share a couple of small kisses before he departs. However, in Luhrmann's version of the play, things happen differently. Juliet is walking by the pool when Romeo startles her and they both fall into the pool. Their conversation then takes place in the pool. They share a several passionate kisses between getting interrupted by a nosy security guard. Another significant scene that was portrayed differently in the two films was the suicide scene Zeffirelli's version is once again almost exact to what we read in the book. Comparing the Presentation of War in the Oliver and Branagh Film Versions of Henry the Fifth Many films have been made of Shakespeare's play, "Henry V". The two I am analysing are by Laurence Olivier (1944) and Kenneth Branagh (1988). They are made for very different audiences with different aims. Although they seem very different, in some ways, Branagh's version used many techniques of Olivier's. Both productions were performed to communicate the director's feelings on war to the audience and were performed when war had played a part in recent history. Olivier's version is very pro–war in that he glorifies war but at the same time it lacks realism so that it was not too close to the reality that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture." This is intended to make the audience feel proud to be fighting for England as their ancestors did. Being produced during the Second World War, many of the viewers may have had relatives out in battle. They had no clear idea of the reality due to the lack of technology and communication. The light–hearted view of the battles reassured the audience. It is shown very patriotically and heroically so the audiences would feel good about the war and have felt proud to be English. The French in this film may have represented the Germans in the war as the enemy. In the battle the enemy is shown as evil to make the audience feel they're doing the right thing fighting evil. Branagh's film was set many years later when society was more immune to shocking films and television programmes. He presents a dynamic king duped into fighting a bloody, vicious war whose victory is undone within a generation. Olivier's version is quite pro–war whereas Branagh's version seems very anti–war. This film portrays his negative attitude to war by emphasising the realism of the battle. The gore and realistic fighting will have shocked the audience and may have allowed them to consider the conditions in Vietnam. William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Franco Zeffireli's film version of the story are different in many ways, but the basic characters and basic plot remain the same. Franco Zeffirelli's screenplay is an edited, re–vamped version of the original tragedy in which lines are cut and scenes are modified. Additionally, Zeffirelli modifies Shakespeare's ghost scenes and uses narrative and film techniques to both create an overall suspenseful atmosphere and generate empathetic feelings towards Hamlet. The various changes made by Zeffirelli are interesting, and attempting to analyze the decisions made by the film director allowed for not only a deeper understanding of the film, but of the story Hamlet in general. In act one, scene one, line 28, the guards state that they have seen something frightening: "What, has this thing appeared again tonight?" (1.1.28). It is here that the audience is able to witness the ghosts, particularly when one guard says, "Look where it comes again" (1.1.49). The ghosts now appear on stage. Horatio, a man of logic and reason, is also scared and admits that, "It harrows me with fear and wonder," thereby allowing the audience to learn that the former king, father of Hamlet, is dead. There is a ghost clothed in his armor strolling the castle's battlements all through the night. The barricades in the ghost scene of the film are foggy, filled with moonlight, and dark. The setting gives the scene an even eerier feel, giving the viewer the idea that what is about to take place could be frightening, suspenseful, or spooky in some way. The icy clouds of breath hovering throughout the shot chill the viewer. The sky is empty, creating an isolated feeling. It is obvious that this scene takes place at night, when the ghosts are able to freely roam; however, the background lighting indicates that day is approaching, and that the ghost will soon have to return to wherever it stays during the day. In the film, the ghosts do not appear as soon as they do in the play. Instead, Zeffirelli rearranges the order of some of the scenes. After watching several different adaptations, Paul Newman's film adaptation in 1987 is extremely faithful to the written version. Focusing on plot, setting, and character development the audience is introduced to a family with an austere future structured around a series of abandonments, difficulty accepting reality and the impossibility of true escape. Both versions begin with a narrator looking back at the past and setting the stage for what memories will follow. The story is told in hindsight by Tom. • 8. Comparing Two Cinderella Versions Of Disney Films Throughout the years there have been many versions of the classic tale, "Cinderella." From European style all the way to Disney. However, they are all based on the same ancient story. Step mother, step sisters, Cinderella marries the love of her life, you get the idea. Yet, each individual story has its own unique touch to make it stand out just a little bit more than the previous story. The twoCinderella stories that I'm going to be comparing are two Disney films. The first one I am going to discuss was released in early spring of 1950, called "Cinderella". The second story is a remake called, "Another Cinderella Story" released in 2008. Both films based on the same story line, yet completely different. In the 1950 Disney film "Cinderella", she talks to animals. Birds wake her each day, mice are her best friends, she feeds the chickens and the dog as well. Cinderella has to attend to every possible need that her step sisters or step mother asks. She does their laundry, makes the food, cleans the floors and windows, makes their beds, washes the cat and feeds each animal. Anything you would do on a regular basis, Cinderella has to do. Cinderella doesn't leave the house, she doesn't have friends that are humans. The way people dress and talk is way different from today's culture. The women wear big dresses and the ... Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars It is no easy task to create a work – through writing or film – that has an impact on society. In writing, one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic that will have an impact on the readers. One must also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in combination with a fitting musical score in order to give the viewer of the film the full experience. There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to create such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson's novel Snow ... Ishmael was also one of the reporters covering Kabuo's trial, and found himself tempted to ignore the ethics of journalism taught to him by his father in order to satiate his bitterness toward Hatsue for ending their childhood romance. In delving deeper into the issues that deal with Kabuo's trial, the effects of war, and the romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue, Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy. In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be used to convey a story line. Guterson went back and forth with scenes from past and present in the novel, combining both and portraying them thickly with literary devices. One of the most predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto's trial was further evidence to such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Portrayal Of Ophelia Throughout The Two Film Versions Of... Simran Jandu Mr. Crawford English 40S November 11, 2016 Portrayal of Ophelia in the two film versions of Hamlet Hamlet is an acknowledging Shakespearean play that was later filmed in 1990 by Franco Zeffirelli and in 1996 by Kenneth Branagh. Both these directors interpret the play differently adding unique twists and turns of their own to help focus on one thing than the other. In their contrasting films, these two directors depict the character of Ophelia very differently. Through Zeffirelli's film, Ophelia, played byHelena Bonham Carter is portrayed as a dreamy, naive, childish character, however in Branagh 's version; Kate Winslet portrays Ophelia as a more mature, sensible and strong willed character. These different portrayals of Ophelia can be further analyzed through cinematography, set and costume designs and through the actor themselves. Firstly, the different interpretation of Ophelia is shown through the cinematography of the two films. Cinematography refers to the camera movement and angles. Zeffirelli chooses to make many of Ophelia's shots filmed from above, reinforcing Ophelia's character small helpless and under control. Whereas in Branagh's most of the scenes of are front, eye level shots. These shots show Ophelia like anyone else in the movie. Another difference in shots can be seen in the "mad scene" part, when Ophelia goes mad after the death of Polonius, her father. In Zeffirelli's film the scene is the camera tends to follow Ophelia around showing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Review of the 2005 Film version of Pride and Prejudice Essay For any great reader, it is known that the 'book is always better than the movie.' Try as they may, moviemakers can never fully capture the author's magic from the original text. I am happy to say that this is not the case in the 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen was a fabulous writer and her novels have captured the attention of booklovers for centuries. The screenwriter, Deborah Moggach, takes Austen's slightly rambling story and polishes it up and makes it easy for modern day people to understand. In the days when fathers were forbidden, by law, to leave property to their daughters, two sisters, Elizabeth and Jane Bennet are being pressured to marry rich gentlemen. Through a series of misunderstandings, Jane and Charles are separated at the great dismay of the whole family. The main focus however, is Elizabeth and whom she chooses to marry. Many undercurrents and sub plots occur in the story. And with a house full of girls, how could it be different? The costume and set designs in the movie are astoundingly realistic. Instead of looking like costumes and sets, the clothing looks like things a person would have worn or lived in during that period of time. While other versions of this same novel have elaborate costumes and fancy clothes, the costumes in the 2005 version are much simpler, which makes it seem much more real. Most of the filming took place in locations which were around when the novel was written, which eliminates the modernism of the movie. Unspoiled beauty was the order of the day in this version of Pride and Prejudice. Throughout the whole film, an impression of not trying too hard is given off, which keeps it fresh, and the acting is no different. • 13. Race in Five Film Versions of Shakespeare's Othello Essay... William Shakespeare's Othello is only moderately interested in questions of race and racism. For Shakespeare, Othello's blackness was mainly a plot device. Though the bard did demonstrate concerns about racial and religious prejudice, in Othello and The Merchant of Venice, his interest in the tragedy of the Moor was principally psychological. For Shakespeare and his contemporary audience, Othello was about jealousy, hatred, and vindictiveness. The play has aged well, as have all Shakespeare's plays, but not, perhaps, in the ways Shakespeare's contemporaries would have predicted. Brode adds that, in the early 1950s when the psychological film was at its peak, Othello served Welles' interest in Freudian psychology (154–155). According to Michael MacLiammoir, who plays Iago to Welles' lead, Welles believed Iago was impotent and a closet homosexual who married Emilia, played by Faye Compton, as his cover so he could pass for heterosexual. In his published diary of the making of the film, Put Money in Thy Purse, MacLiammoir goes on to say that Welles' Iago has a hero's crush on Othello, and becomes upset and jealous as a hurt lover when Othello gives a promotion to Cassio, played by Michael Laurence, instead of him. To add insult to injury, Othello is rumored to have slept with a frustrated Emilia. In Welles version, both the director and Iago buy this motive. When Iago sees Othello and Cassio, played by Derek Jacobi, joined together as brothers, it is too much for Iago. According to Brode, Welles was adamant that MacLiammoir, appear, with the help of makeup and performance, to be castrated (155). • 14. Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations and readings can be made. This is particularly true of his comedies, where the light–hearted humour is often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the director – in the cinematic context – to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are suppressed. This variance in interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare's comedies, Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night and Kenneth Branagh's A Much Ado About Nothing ['Much Ado']. This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily Malvolio. It is essentially Malvolio's ultimate narcissism that allows the other characters to easily plot his demise . Nunn's adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the 'professional clown' proving persuasive because the fool presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a game, that lovers often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and comedy of the film. However Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious issues and at times, the deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley's moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as a man who lives alone away from Olivia's house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the characters and provides some telling insights. This is illustrated when he shows Olivia why "take away the fool" could mean take away the lady," arguing not only to save his job but also out of a deep compassion for Olivia's grief over her brother's death, and a desire to show why she need not commit ... • 17. A Comparison Of The Tell Tale Heart And The Tell Tale Heart To begin with, the Tell Tale Heart is very odd and suspenseful. It and the rewritten version are very different, and though they are both very descriptive, only one can help a reader understand the plot more. The original would be better because it tells you the narrator's thoughts about why he wants to kill the old man, while the rewritten version, no matter what point of view, happens after the murder and would not help the reader understand the thoughts of the narrator. Some ways the original Tell Tale Heart and the rewritten version are similar are the mood and the plot. The mood of the stories are both suspenseful and erie and build up tension throughout the story. According to (Poes) text it states, "I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations, but the noise steadily increased." According to (Johnson's) text it states,"We talked a little longer, and then suddenly he gripped his head, and doubled over. Something was wrong." This quotation also built up suspense because the man across from the policemen fell over and made the policemen nervous about whether or not the man was the murderer. Another thing that makes both versions is the plot. The plot of both stories are in the old man's house in the 1800's. According to (Poes) text it states, "And then, when my head was well in the room, I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye." The narrator was in the old man's bed room, waiting for the perfect time to commit the murder. According to (Johnson's) text it states, "We went all around the large house, and saw nothing suspicious or anything that could have caused a murder. The man pulled up three wooden chairs, and let us sit and we chatted amongst ourselves, while he sat across from us." The policemen sat in the exact place where the corpse was under the floorboards, and never noticed until the man showed them. The stories also had a lot of things that were different from each other. Some of those ways were the pacing of the stories and the character development throughout the stories. Even though Franco Zeffirelli's version of the scene started noisily, Baz Luhrmann's was noisier. Another similarity were the camera angle shots. This film was set in the 19th Century in the fictional city of Monte Athena and starred major actors and actresses such as Sophie Marceau, Kelvin Klein, Rupert Everett and Calista Flockhart. The second was a budget film made for channel 4 by Royal Shakespeare Company. Adrian Noble was the producer and the film was made in 1994. It was much more surrealistic because this version of the film was based on a young boy's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The actual fairy world was filled with light bulbs, and it was a mostly blue–black backdrop. The only light seemed to be focused on the characters on stage. In the human world, Noble uses different colours to show different colours in different rooms. For instance, he used blue to show springtime, or when the male characters are being unfaithful. Black, to show evil, red to show dram and sex, e.g. the scene where Titania lures bottom in to her bower, the bed, cushions and blankets are all red. He also uses yellow and orange to show a play within a play. In the film, different rooms are painted these different colours to show the mood within the room. However, the fairy's clothes are very bright, and make the fairy world look a little brighter. Each of the fairies seems to have a different outfit, based on one colour, but Oberon has very dark clothes. Camera Angles In a film, the producer or director has many opportunities to use a variety of camera angles. In film A, even before any words are spoken, the camera shows a medium shot of the country house, followed by shots of activity, tables being laid, and food being prepared, then, the camera goes into close–up mode and it picks out various items of food, and then theseus. Then, the camera pans across the landscape. This gives you an idea of where the play is set and what is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Movie Essays Romanticism in the Film Version of The Big Sleep In Raymond Chandler's novel The Big Sleep, he presents two sisters, Vivian and Carmen. These women become the central characters, aside from Philip Marlowe, and they control much of the action in the novel. The 1946 film version of The Big Sleep, however, manipulatesChandler's characters considerably. Aside from playing with the dialogue of the novel, the screen–writers change the very essences of Vivian and Carmen. Perhaps it is the casting of the film which forces changes from the novel, or perhaps the Production Code keeps the writers from developing the women in the way that Chandler does; either way, the film version of The Big Sleep makes the story romantic and... A fact that is hammered home throughout the novel in the dialogue between these two characters. In the movie, however, there is a distinct attraction between the characters, purposely created to capitalize on the real–life affair between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Director Howard Hawks was charged with creating a movie vehicle for these stars as a result of their incredible chemistry from the earlier movie To Have and Have Not. Bogart and Bacall were phenomenally well–matched on–screen and off, and Hawks decided that The Big Sleep was the best film to display their chemistry. In order to do so, the script needed to be revised from the novel. The novel calls for Marlowe and Vivian to go their separate ways, with Marlowe discretely threatening to reveal Vivian's secrets and Vivian shattered and responsible for Carmen's deranged life. Hawks asked William Faulkner to create a screenplay that would maximize the drama while maintaining an air of romance between Bogart and Bacall. The script that resulted concluded with Marlowe and Vivian together, presumably heading off into the sunset towards an implied marriage; the traditional happy ending. The character of Vivian that comes out of Faulkner's script is softer and more dynamic than Chandler's Vivian. Faulkner's sings in a gambling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Movie And Film Version Of To Kill A Mockingbird The film version of To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), which stars Gregory Peck as Atticus and Mary Badham as Scout, is as much a classic as the novel itself. (The film received eight Academy Awards nominations and netted awards for Best Actor, Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, and Best Art Direction – Set Decoration, Black and White.) Ideally, a novel and its film version complement each other, which, on many levels, is the case withTo Kill a Mockingbird. However, film can accomplish things that novels can't, and vice versa. Likewise, film has limitations that a novel doesn't. This essay explores some of the differences between To Kill a Mockingbird, the film and the novel. Narration By its nature, film is a visual medium, which makes a first–person story difficult to tell. To have Scout narrating throughout the film as she does in the book would prove distracting, so Scout as narrator is only presented to set the mood of a scene in the film. As a result, viewers don't get a strong sense of Scout's first–person narration as they do in the book; instead, they simply notice the childlike perspective portrayed in the story. (The film uses music to help reinforce the child's point–of–view. The music is very elementary, and much of the score is composed of single notes without chords or embellishments.) Because the narration is not as straightforward in the film, the film seems to shift more to Jem's experiences. For example, Jem finds all the articles in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Comparing Film Versions Of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet is one of the most tragic love stories ever written. It was written by William Shakespeare in 1594. There have been many remakes of the play such as Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, Gnomeo and Juliet directed by Kelly Asbury in 2011, and many school plays reenacting it. The film version by Baz Luhrmann and the script by William Shakespeare can be compared using three scenes: the balcony scene, Tybalt's death scene, and the final suicide scene. The balcony scene in Act 2, scene 2 is a major scene both in the film and the script. In the script Juliet never comes down from her balcony, but in the film they are pool–side together and make contact with each other. They eventually fall into the pool where they ... Before actually killing Tybalt, Romeo injures him very bad in the film, but not in the movie. Finally, Tybalt is killed with a gun in the film, whereas in the movie he is killed by a dagger. The final suicide scene in Act 5, scene 3 is the greatest scene in both the film and the script. In the script, Juliet's body was in the Capulet tomb, but in the film Juliet's body was in a church. There were lit candles surrounding Juliet's body and lighting up the church in the film. Paris was not there for Romeo to kill in the film like he was in the script. In the film, Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo drink the poison and die, but when she wakes up in the script he is already dead. Instead of using Romeo's dagger like in the script, Juliet kills herself with Romeo's gun in the film. As one can see, the film and the script can be compared using many different scenes. The play was more tragic than the film and had a very clear context. The film had more sound effects and visuals whereas in the script you had to imagine what everyone would look like and picture what all the scenes would be like. Being the first African American Cinderella and a remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1957 musical, Cinderella, the story's plot is very similar to the 1950 Disney animated film. Cinderella stands up for what she believes in much more than she does in previous films. An example of this would be when Cinderella speaks to her stepsisters towards the opening of the film, as both stepsisters try to find out if a particular hat looks better on one of them, but Cinderella makes it known that the hat isn't flattering on either of them. Cinderella makes comments like this throughout the film, but never in a rude or demeaning way. When she expresses remarks in this instance, she says it in a calm and respectful manner. So, although her character is a bit spiced up, she is still extremely kind. Cinderella also comes to realization that there are some things that have to be worked for rather than sitting just dreaming and wishing for things to fall into place as she states in the film, "You know what the problem is with most people? They sit around wishing for something to happen instead of doing something about it (Wilson 2015)." She wrote it in 1816, when she went on holiday with her friend, Byron. Byron was already a famous poet, and it was him who suggested that whilst they were away, they should both write a ghost story. At the time it was just a way of passing time and having fun for Mary Shelley, but little did she know that her story would become famous worldwide. Boris Karloff's career was launched by the huge success of this film. However, many changes had been made in Whale's version from the original novel. In contrast with this, 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' was released in 1994, sixty three years after James Whale's version, and unlike his version, it followed very strictly Mary Shelley's original plot. • 34. Two Film Versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classic love story written by the incomparable William Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare's works are considered literary classics, but none are more loved than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Elizabethan England. The title characters Romeo and Juliet are members of two feuding families, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular film versions portray two very different styles of this one play. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One such scene was the infamous balcony scene. Zeferelli stuck to the classical interpretation, while Luhrmann did not. In Zeferelli's version Juliet was on the balcony outside her bedroom calling rhetorically, "Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo?" Romeo appears and climbs up the balcony, and they share a couple of small kisses before he departs. However, in Luhrmanns version of the play, events occurred slightly differently. Juliet is walking by the pool, when Romeo startles her and they both fall in the pool. Their conversation then takes place in the pool. In between getting interrupted by a nosy security guard they share several passionate kisses. Another significant scene that was portrayed differently in the two versions was the suicide scene. Zeferelli's version is once again almost exact to what we read in the book. Romeo sees what he perceives to be a dead Juliet lying in her family's tomb, and distraught by the sight he drinks poison. When Juliet awakens from her sleep she finds Romeo dead, and stabs herself with his knife. In Luhrmanns version Romeo goes to the church where Juliet is laid out for her funeral. • 35. Island Of Lost Souls: Connections Between Book And Film... Connections Between Book and Film Versions In evaluating the film adaptation of Island of Lost Souls the film is an intermediate adaption of the novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The definition of an intermediate adaption is, "Some elements of the story are kept in the film, other elements are dropped, and still more elements are added" (Desmond 44). The film has many of the same narrative elements but the addition of the female character Ruth creates a distinct change in the film. This additional character of Ruth allows the film to have a more romantic or sexual aspect, which helps to draw in more viewers. Since this film is an intermediate adaptation the director is better able to create a more appealing story for the viewers. One of the opening scenes in the movie is after Edward Parker is rescued and he yells out for his fiancГ© Ruth. Parker makes a request of Montgomery to, "send a message" (Arlen). This is a very important scene as this creates a reason why Ruth is on the island in the film. Parker's first thoughts are of his fiancГ© and getting word to her that he has been rescued. The atmosphere that Doran uses in his movie its completely different to the one in the play, while Shakespeare's Hamlet occurs during the late medieval period, Doran puts a modern spin in the film, by adding modern day situations and places, as well as the way the characters are dressed, the modern day objects they use, or the surveillance cameras that are located in the castle which allows to see what is happening around, suggesting a feeling of always being watched and "controlled". There are four repository models commonly employed in Version Control systems. There are also examples of repository located on a shared folder which allows users from within a local area network to collaborate (4). The changes on the local copy needs to be reviewed and should be marked as resolved after complying with the changes of the repository. For certain data types, this method is still employed – such as in the version control of images, binary media where determination of atomic data unit is not necessarily well defined. For data sets that have a well defined atomic data unit, the most common method is changesets (deltas), where only the modified atomic data units are stored with each version. This, in most cases, provides significant saving in repository storage space. The changeset method, however, comes with the need of data set construction in order to get to a certain version of it. For example, in order to check out the latest version of the data set, a build process is required starting from the initial version of the data set (version 1), incorporating each delta, all the way to the last version, traversing the complete version tree. The TV changes channel to a news report, immediately recognised as the prologue of the play. The verbal style of the film is set as the female anchorwoman reads the prologue's original text in the tone of a journalistic contemporary reportage in which we are accustomed to hearing the news of tragedies in modern life. From the onset, Luhrmann makes his spectators aware of his modern setting and the fact that he is making a clear–cut modern movie. The argument field is the evaluation of films during the 1990's, and could more specifically include historical films created in the 1990's. The argument field is an important point to my argument because historical film contains many debatable points, all of which will be discussed after the reviews are summarized. The critics felt that the movie did not make a smooth enough transition from the novel, and felt that the overall content was too complicated. Richard Blake from America argued, "the complexity of the novel becomes simply confusion in the film" (1).
