4. PALERMO
The Cathedral of Palermo was erected in 1185 by Archbishop
Gualtiero Offamilio. It was modified, with additions,
alterations and restorations between XV and XVI centuries.
The Church is dedicated to ‘’Assumption of Virgin Mary’’.
Saint Rosalia is the patroness of the city to whom is dedicated
the Meridional Chapel. The Cathedral is characterized by the
presence of different styles.

5. This theatre was projected by
Giuseppe Almeyda, completed in 1874.
It is in neoclassical style, it illuminates
the square; its role in Palermo is
central to social life.

Emanuele is one of the largest of
Europe. It was built by Giovan
Battista Filippo Basile in 1875 and
terminated by his son Ernesto
Basile. The exterior is in the high
neoclassical style incorporating

6. The square includes the ‘’Palazzo Senatorio’’ called ‘’Palace
of the Eagle’’, the church is of Saint Catherine and other
prestigious palaces. Pretoria fountain is one of the most
beautiful fountains in Italy, takes up the entire centre of the
square. The fountain was created for the Medici family, to
embellish a Florentine villa. But it was bought by the Senate
of Palermo and transported to Sicily. It was called ‘’the
fountain of shame’’ for numerous nude figures.

13. MESSINA
On the 2 October 1835 Ferdinando II°
of Borbone ordered the building of a
new theatre , accepting the demands
of the inhabitants who weren’t
satisfied of the old theatre . It was
open 12 January 1852 for Ferdinando’s
II° birthday.
