The graduate degree you obtain is proof that you are an expert in your field of
specialization. To get to that point of expertise, however, you have to read, read, and
then read some more. You’ll review a great deal research into the theories and findings
of others in your field. This research review, whether done on a large scale basis for a
dissertation or capstone project, or in individual course papers, will provide the

springboard for your own thoughts.
All of this research and study can be time consuming. I hope our course activities
will offer tools which will help you be more efficient. One tool is the Annotated
Bibliography. Have you ever been in a conversation with a colleague, or in the middle of
writing a paper and you remember an important idea or finding, only to think, “Now
where did I read that?” You search through some notebooks, glance over the notes on
your bulletin board and go through your desk for papers you’ve written. In other words,
you might be frustrated and losing precious time, time that you could be using to think
creatively, write coherently, and express you own ideas.
You may be able to schedule the time to do research, but you don’t really have the
time to re-search! Search once, write a brief summary of what your read, note how it fits
into your current or potential projects, and be sure to keep an accurate record of the
publication data of the source, so you can find it again in minutes.
The Annotated Bibliography is an excellent way to keep a record of what you read.
You will want to start one now, organize it by categories, and keep a record of every
article you read and every important idea and finding you come across during your
program of study. Once you get into the habit of doing this, you’ll never have to re-
search again. And, you’ll find yourself well prepared for your final projects and papers.
Two important tips for compiling an Annotated Bibliography.
Be sure to enter the publication information (author, date, and so on) using APA
form and style. For this activity you were only reviewing a few articles. But when it
comes time to writing a paper which may require tens of references, you don’t want to
have to spend time then in going back over your form and style. Enter it right, the first

time. In this activity, and in all of your writing products at Northcentral, you’ll be
expected to follow APA form and style
Follow the same rules of integrity when preparing the Annotated Bibliography as
you do in other writings. Read the material, think about it, and then write the summary in
your own words. Avoid repeating the words or key phrases of the authors. And don’t
forget, you want your entries to be useful and meaningful to you. So, add a note that
places the material in the context of something else that you’ve read or in relation to
your own research projects.
Through these processes you will develop good reading skills, the ability to
properly record and store what’ve you’ve read, and practice use of APA form and style.
This may sound like a daunting task, but now that you’re more than halfway through the
course, I’m sure you can do it! And don’t forget, I’m just an email away if you have any

two articles that are listed in the instructions to draft an annotated bibliography in APA format.

The authors are faculties from five partner universities: Deakin University, Geelong,
Australia; Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia; University of Southern Queensland,
Toowoomba, Austria; and RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. They discussed their
findings on distributed leadership (DL) in the quality management of online learning
environments (OLEs) in higher education. The purpose of the study was to (a) acquire an
in-depth analysis of senior department leaders' perceptions and understandings of
concepts, and principles of distributed leadership—as they apply to the development and
management of quality OLEs, and (b) to highlight Australian’s social inclusiveness in the
higher education sectors. The premise of the study is that DL is a complex role that could
involve partnerships, collaborative engagements (e.g., administrative and classroom
levels), and navigation of emerging OLEs. Holt, Palmer, Gosper, Sankey, and Allan’s
(2014) inference is that the subject and the study of DL are highly relevant to
understanding the complexities of leadership roles in higher education, especially
management of OLEs. It evolved around the researchers’ data collection method in
which they used one-on-one interviews to gather data about the leaders’ perceptions of
higher education leadership roles. The research is based on Australian’s Learning and

Teaching Council nationally funded project “Building Distributed Leadership in
Designing and Implementing a Quality Management Framework for Online Learning
Environments” (p. 2). Although concepts and principles of DL are not devoid of
scrutiny, the findings highlight how the data could be used to (a) further develop
frameworks of OLEs, (b) to understand the complexity of navigating higher education
leadership roles, (c) to fill gaps in literature, or (d) to serve as resources for topics
involving online learning environments, higher education management responsibilities,
distributed leaderships, and senior leaderships in higher education.
In summary, the purpose of this assignment is to create an academic activity whereas Ed.
D students could engage in the process of constructing annotated bibliographies in APA format.
In doing so, the guidelines include a choices of one of two samples. The article by Holt, D.,
Palmer, S., Gosper, M., Sankey, M., & Allan, G. (2014) is the subject of this paper. The
premise of their article is that distributed leadership (DL) is a complex role that could involve
partnerships, collaborative engagements, and navigation of online learning environments
(OLEs), and that the subject and the study of DL are highly relevant to not only understanding
the complexities of leadership roles in OLEs but also leadership roles in higher education in
general. Although concepts and principles of DL are the sources of ongoing debates, the finding
of this study could be used, among others, to expand the literature on subjects that deal with
online learning frameworks.
