Richard Allen Davis had a difficult childhood, growing up with alcoholic parents in San Francisco. He was abused by his mother and witnessed her "immoral conduct". His parents divorced, and he was raised by his father who remarried multiple times, causing Davis to resent his stepmothers. These early negative relationships resulted in Davis having contempt for and hatred of women that manifested in sexual violence and criminal acts later in life. He was discharged dishonorably from the army after 13 months. In 1993, he kidnapped and murdered 12-year-old Polly Klaas during a slumber party, for which he was sentenced to death and currently awaits execution at San Quentin while passing the time making artwork.
