ABSTRACT
Whether you open a business or a nonprofit organization one has to have a vision and mission for
that organization. An organizational mission is the goals one is aiming towards. The mission of the
American Red Cross (ARC) is to "prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies
by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors" (American Red Cross, 2014).
However, there are documented and undocumented times when an organization does not abide by

It plays important roles in society by placing public service above profit. They use a network of
donors, volunteers and employees around the world to relieve suffering by servicing five areas:
disaster relief, blood donations, providing support for American military families, providing health
and safety services and giving support through international humanitarian services. Although they
exist as a not–for–profit enterprise, business ethics are still essential to the success of any
organization. The American Red Cross has received the highest ethical performance from its
employees and volunteers because they give a responsible to the society (American Red Cross,
2011).
In September of 2011 terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. Almost 3,000
people die and more than 6,000 were injured and in need of help. The American Red Cross raised
more than 500 million dollars in response to the 9/11 attacks. There was a problem because they
only distributed 154 million dollars in aid. The question than became where the money went. The
American Red Cross claimed the money that was donated went into a big pool of money that was
distributed by the company's corporate governance (The Socialist Worker, 2005). In addition, The
American Red Cross urged people to donate blood even though the blood was not needed at that
time and a good amount of it was destroyed. In the end, The American criticized by the

Determine the impact of this event on ARC's "benefits of business ethics" (employee commitment,
investor loyalty, customer satisfaction, and bottom line). Business ethics includes the principles and
standards that guide behavior in the world of business. The ethical behavior of a company is being
judged and determined by its stakeholders. They may not always be right but their judgment affects
the company's reputation in society. There are several benefits of business ethics. Ethics contribute

This did not sit well with donors or with government officials. A congressional hearing took place to
look into the American Red Cross's actions. They were forced to address their stakeholders concerns
and demands. The American Red Cross's reputation was damaged by their actions in the aftermath
of this disaster. With the devastation of hurricane Katrina, the American Red Cross's reputation was
again damaged by their actions. The relief efforts were viewed as inadequate by the public. "These
subpar emergency responses were the outcome of a host of fraudulent, questionable, and inefficient
decisions made by the ARC, as well as its federal, state, and local disaster relief counterparts"
(Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2011, p. 331). There was a communications issue between FEMA
and the American Red Cross and a disagreement on the roles and responsibilities of each agency.
Another issue in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina was the mismanagement of funds and
volunteers. "The accusations include the improper diversion of relief supplies, failure to follow Red
Cross procedures in tracking and distributing supplies, and use of felons as volunteers in the disaster
area in violation of Red Cross rules" (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2011, p. 331). The
devastation was overwhelming and the amount of volunteers was more than they have ever seen.
Because of this they did not go through their normal screening process. Items and money came up

Understanding Services for Developmental Disabilities
As a parent, learning that your child has developmental disabilities can be a life altering moment in
time and can cause a devastating chain reaction of events. These events have the potential to change
family priorities and structure, hurt relationships, deplete financial savings and stability, and
emotionally drain everyone intimately involved with you and your child. How do you find human
services programs, agencies, or advocates, whose primary job is to help you provide everything your
child needs? It certainly can be an overwhelming barrier, but it's the first step in giving you, your
child, and your family a plan of action, goals, success, good mental health and bringing everyone
back together.

American Red Cross Ethical Issues Essay
The American Red Cross has stood for a place that people to go to for help when anything
catastrophic has happened in their lives. It has been around since the 1880's and made a place in the
United States years later. It has been there to help during World Wars, earthquakes, hurricanes,
tornadoes, floods, fires, blood donations etc. It has helped millions of people during tragic times.
You never think of the Red Cross as an organization that has ethical issues but they do and it has
cost them their image. Elizabeth Dole was a wonderful woman who kept the ARC running like a
well oiled machine but since she left there has been numerous people that have taken her place and
then had to leave due to questionable actions. It seems that ever since 911, the Red Cross has been ...

For example when online donations came in for these disasters they were not equipped to handle
them. They had to have tech employee's work round the clock to make sure the websites could
handle the amount of traffic it received. Another ethical problem is, trusting its leaders and workers
implicitly. Times have changed and we cannot have that. People in today's world do not have the
same morale fiber that they used to have when we were little. Organizations like the Red Cross now
need to come up with better ethical standards. They have done so by not having too many people at
the top. Instead of 50 they now have 20. They also need to have controls in place that will ensure
that employee misconduct will no longer be a problem. In addition people need to be trained in
ethics and be made to sign ethical documents that spell out the companies ethical procedures, which
the Red Cross has done. The Red Cross needs to be more transparent about where its money
donations are going. Transparency is huge and there would be no question if the ARC adopted this

Tilted Arc
The Destruction of Public Art Tilted Arc (Figure 1) was brought down on the 15th of March of 1989
by the General Services Administration (GSA) in the centre of New York's federal plaza. Tilted Arc
was a site specific work of a curved steel wall or barrier, that was 120 feet long and 12 feet high,
with an arch that gave the effect of the wall leaning inwards. The GSA commissioned Richard Serra
to build a sculpture for the 'Art–in–Architecture' program that would be placed in the plaza in front
of the Jacob K Davits Federal building. The work was set up in 1981 and received a few critical
comments. However, it was only when William Diamond, an appointee GSA New York Regional
Administrator, started to investigate a bit more that he created substantial arguments against the
sculpture to try and relocate it. Tilted Arc then became a controversial piece of work that involved
the art world and major associations and resulted in a lawsuit and public hearing in 1985. The main
issues that surrounded the controversy relate to the way in which the space was transformed, the
rights of the artist, and censorship. In addition, we must question the role of public art in society, if
certain works should be considered "public art," and the ways in which power and politics can
influence the arts. Richard Serra is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

experience of seeing public art is different as the setting of a work can change the perception of the

and change their purpose. When talking about Tilted Arc he argues that the public space is internal
to its meaning, this would change the meaning and the art. The following quote by Richard Serra

Joan Of Arc's Accomplishments
Would the world be different if Joan of Arc hadn't united France? Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who
lived in France. The people of France called her Maid of Orléans. She is still known as one of
France's greatest Saints for her many accomplishments. Joan of Arc has lead France to many great
victories, but her greatest accomplishment was uniting France. Being a woman these
accomplishments were hard for her because she had little support and no military training to be
prepared for these battles. The low support she had did not stop her, however she was confident she
could come out with a victory. She had many struggles along the way, and lost many battles, but she
became one of France's greatest Saints. Joan of Arc was the daughter of a

The Development of Civilian Emergency Medical Services in the United States Civilian Emergency
Medical Services (EMS) is the most widely used system for emergency services provided in the
United States. The United States development of Civilian EMS has evolved and changed since the
19th century. The actual foundation for EMS originated during the Civil War in America and served
as the model for future civilian EMS development. During the Civil War Dr. Jonathan Letterman
created a system of ambulances due to the disorganization that existed in medical services during the
Battle of Bull Run. Surgeon General William Hammond appointed Jonathan Letterman as the

The most noticeable improvement was the use of helicopters as a mode of medical evacuation to
quickly remove injured soldiers from the battlefield. During the Vietnam War modifications were
made for helicopters used to transport wounded soldiers. The helicopters were known as HU–1 or
Huey. The Huey contained a large compartment that allowed emergency care while still in the air.
Civilian EMS originated with the first civilian manufactured ambulance produced in 1890 and built
by the Hess–Eisenhardt Company in Cincinnati. The ambulance was a horse drawn wagon
specifically designed to move injured patients. The first electric motorized ambulance was made in
Chicago in 1899 and donated to the Michael Reese Hospital by local businessmen. The St. Vincent
Hospital of New York began operating an electric motorized ambulance in 1900. James
Cunningham, Son & Company created the first gasoline powered ambulance in 1909; the company
was located in Rochester New York. The gasoline powered ambulance had a thirty two horsepower
four cylinder internal engine, electric lights, and a side mounted gong to alert other vehicles that an
ambulance was on the road. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s numerous civilian emergency medical
service volunteer groups were created to serve local municipalities. By 1936 the American Red
Cross (ARC) had established 900 dedicated Emergency First Aid Stations along the country's
highways to aid

The American Red Cross Failure
In the past, the Red Cross Association has dealt with controversy from its corrupt leadership to its
reputation surrounding possible fraud. O.C. Ferrell, John Fraedrich and Linda Ferrell (2015) defines
the American Red Cross (ARC) as an independent organization who's mission is to "provide relief to
victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies" (Ferrell,
Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015). In recent news, Hurricane Matthew made its way to the United States in
October 2016. The category 4 storm was expected to damage the Southeast coast of the United
States including Florida and South Carolina (Bacon, 2016). While many residents took precautions
and acknowledged the state of emergencies that were put into place,

There are only two arcs into LA, with a combined capacity of 150 (80 + 70). Because of this
bottleneck, it is not possible to ship any more than 150 from ST to LA. Since 150 actually are being

configuration of the offshore pipeline network on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and the routing
of the natural gas through the network. The routing done by GassOpt is based on a model that is a
generalization of the model for the maximum flow problem. Like the maximum flow problem, the
objective is to maximize the flow of natural gas through the network. However, rather than a single
source and a single sink, this model has multiple sources (separate natural gas fields) and multiple
sinks (separate markets). In addition, the model has a number of extra constraints mentioned in the
application vignette.
The use of GassOpt has had many important benefits.

Propaganda In World War 1
The Effect of U.S. Propaganda in World War One
World War One was a pivotal point in the evolution of how warfare was implemented to the battle
field. The beginning of war started with similar technology and tactics in the 19th century, but by the
end of the war technology along with tactics will change extensively. All sides of the war eventually
would use telephones, wireless communications, armored tanks, and even airplanes to their
advantage (Kaminski, 1989). Away from the battle field though a new device was constructed for
the war effort, a literary device; the use of propaganda. Although propaganda was never a tangible
use in physical battle it still had a great effect in the outcome of World War One, an effect

Propaganda gave way to Americans joining the Red Cross, buying liberty goods, or planting victory
gardens and other various positive activities in an effort to better the war effort, but in the midst of
these efforts also revealed negative efforts by US citizens. The recent German immigration in the
1870s and 1880s posed a problem in the social relations between non German Americans. Being
Anti–German was often associated with patriotism; many citizens burned German books, and
removed German composers from symphony programs (Greve, 2014). Eventually things turned
away from more fickle matters considering German accustoms and turned towards darker matters.
Those deemed too German faced ridicule, threats, accusations of disloyalty or espionage and
sometimes physical harm (Greve, 2014). The social conditions for many German immigrants were
vastly changed during this period of anti–German rhetoric. Many German immigrants felt the need
to Americanize (Greve, 2014). German culture was hindered with many immigrants refusing to
speak in their native tongue as well as teaching German as a second language, America had truly
fallen into a state of Germanophobia (Greve, 2014).

American Red Cross Analysis
It's amazing how far United States have come along when it comes to caring for an individual that
you don't know, yet you are doing everything in your power to save someone's life. American Red
Cross was founded by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881, but before the American Red Cross came into
America it was and international movement that was founded by a young Swiss man named Henry
Dunant. To know that 40,000 men are laying dead or alive and wounded from a war that soldiers
fought for us in the civil war, yet there were no medical attempts to save lives, made Dunant
organize local people to help wounded soldiers. The locals helped with wounded soldiers by
feeding, and comforting them when in need. In October 1868 the International Red Cross Movement
was created in Geneva, Switzerland and their duty was to provide non–partisan care to the wounded
soldiers in time of war. (American Red Cross pg. 12, 2011) After the civil ... Show more content on

Influence of Religion on Society during the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries
The undeniable power, force, and influence of religion stand out throughout history. However,
according to J. Michael Allen and James B. Allen in World History from 1500, in the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries, religion was exceptionally important, because it had a great influence on
everything from government to social order and family relationships (16). Hundreds of years may
separate these two time periods and the modern world, but the same positive effects of religion such
as unity, security, and a social order are still basic ideals in today's world. This is also true for the
negative effects such as the conflicts that result in war and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With this sense of security and belonging felt throughout the community, people felt united,
especially as Joan was able to mobilize them to fight "For God and for France." They shared
common interests and common goals in living a religious lifestyle as dictated by their religion
whenever possible. In fact, one of Christopher Columbus's motives for sailing westward to India
was to "open up opportunities to take the Christian gospel to the heathen"(Allen & Allen 23).
Religion also brought a new structure to households. Elders were not only parents, but they also
became teachers and role models for their children (12). This became obvious in the movie Joan of
Arc, where the majority of dinner conversations related to their religious beliefs, as it was important
to pass on the importance and need for religion to the future generations. Unity was a very powerful
tool during this time period because power came in numbers. This was obvious when Joan gathered
the community and convinced the people to defend their beliefs and fight back against the English.
Since the people were united in their faith, it was much easier to defend their territories and beliefs.
Thus, religion had tremendous positive effects.
On the other hand, this new feeling of expansion, security, hope, and unity were the constant

Compare And Contrast Sam Houston And Joan Of Arc
Throughout history, courage has inspired many to overcome endeavors and stand for what they
believe. Sam Houston and Joan of Arc made an effort to stand up and do that very thing. Courage
rises from deep within a person's character. The true courage these two people had to stand up
against the odds, and to strive for what is right and necessary is astonishing. Joan of Arc and Sam
Houston had many similarities and differences defining their courage. Both led an army with
charismatic leadership, stood for what they believed despite others due to their devout loyalty, and
unfortunately never got to see the impact they made on history and the people they fought for. They
also had many differences involving their ways of reaching their goal, and ... Show more content on

Joan of Arc grew up as a peasant but by the end of the war, she earned her family a striking coat of
arms signifying her ascent into nobility. She came from an unknown village and rose to greatness
when she was a mere teenager, and as an uneducated peasant. She had the heart of a warrior, not of a
nineteen year old girl. She grew up very quickly and had the responsibility of a nation on her
shoulders. Sam Houston grew up very different. He grew up as a well–off child and his calling did
not arise until he was older. Although they began and ended with difference fates, both courageous
servicemen acted on their initial instinct to act out what they believe. Sam Houston was able to do
something no other man in his position could do. He stood up even though other people strongly
disagreed with what he had to say. He was alone in what he thought but did not capitulate to the
single–mindedness of the others. Joan of Arc on the contrary, had no one but the English against her.
Her nation was rooting for her and she had the support of thousands of soldiers and the King of
France himself. After their deaths, what they did still continued to impact their country. Houston was
able to see the start of what he has stood up for rise and become firm in the United States
government. However, Joan of Arc was burned before she was able to see what her selflessness
produced. She was the vessel to the creation of a new

Joan Of Arc Research Paper
To what extent is there a 'real' Joan of Arc? There are varying perspectives on Joan of Arc, all of
which could be considered 'real'. Her existence and achievements have been exaggerated and
distorted throughout history. The only aspect of Joan that has remained constant is her image as a
symbol of nationalism and pride. Popular representations of Joan of Arc include the portrayal by
Mark Twain's biography 'Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc', Joan as an icon of ultra–
nationalism by French political leaders, and 'The Song of Joan of Arc' by Christine de Pizan.
Through these different perspectives, it is evident that multiple portrayals of Joan of Arc exist

Twain wrote about her after four hundred years, in 1896. During this period of time, the Women's
Suffrage Movement was occurring in the United States. Women's suffrage refers to the legal right of
women to vote in elections. Additionally, it was around this time that the concept of the New
Woman emerged, characterising the increasingly independent activities of women, especially of
younger generations. Women were becoming more active participants as a member of society and
the workforce; they began receiving more opportunities for education and employment
opportunities. Some won rights to attend university, obtained professional educations and began
working in roles that were traditionally male–dominated. As a result, Twain presented Joan of Arc as
an aspirational benchmark set for the generation of young girls that would be affected by the
Women's Suffrage Movement by emphasising her humble beginnings as a peasant and achievements
despite the overwhelming odds stacked against her. Twain's representation of Joan is largely dictated
by this context, and personal reasons. He had a daughter named Susy, who Joan is said to be
modelled after. For this reason, Twain's Joan of Arc could have been represented in a way that would
preserve an image of his eldest daughter by accentuating her courage and overall character. Through
Twain's perspective of Joan, it can be clearly seen that multiple Joans exist throughout history, and

In 1951 Truman established a Federal Blood Program for national defense and named the ARC the

victims and their survivors. It also helped the government form FEMA.
The mission of the American Red Cross was highlighted after the 2001 terrorist attacks on New

Fossil Fuels vs Energy Alternatives
How can energy be converted from one form to another? All forms of energy can be converted to
another form of. For example: A pendulum is an object is suspended by a string or wire for support.
If the object is moved to one side and then released, it will swing back and forth in an arc. At that
moment the object reaches the top of its swing, it stops for an instant, and then begins another
swing. At that instant of stopping, the object has 100 percent potential energy and no kinetic energy.
The object starts back down through the swing, the object is gaining kinetic energy and losing
potential energy. At the instant the object is at the bottom of the swing, it has 100 percent kinetic
energy and no potential energy. As the object climbs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Biomass energy is an organic matter that is used by photosynthesis. This is used to generate
energy and the most common energy is coming from the wood of the trees, corn, municipal solid
waste, and sugarcane. The biomass is used to create ethanol, biodiesel, bio oil and biogas. This in
turns create electricity with steam turbines and gasifies to produce heat. The advantage of using the
biomass over the fossil fuel is that biomass is a renewable carbon source, zero net carbon dioxide
emissions, lower methane, sulfate, and hydrocarbon emissions, and the most important is no
dependence on foreign oil. Another is the geothermal energy, in which it uses the heat from the earth
to warm things up. The common source is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly. The
main sources of uses are to heat homes, greenhouse, industrial process heating mineral recovery,
fisheries and also mitigate global warnings. Geothermal energy is more valuable than the fossil fuels
because it is an inexhaustible energy source, lot less emissions in the atmosphere, more efficient
than solar energy, work under any kinds of weather conditions. The fossil fuels are irreplaceable,
create massive environmental pollution and are also causes the major factor of the global warming
and the ozone layer depletion. Also the Biomass and the Geothermal are very inexpensive compare
to the fossil fuels by almost 50 percent.

The Negative Impacts Of Hurricanes
Hurricanes are some of the costliest and most dangerous events that happen in our world. Many
historical hurricanes like Harvey, Katrina, Sandy have killed hundreds of people and cost billions of
dollars to repair the damages. But many reform bills and agencies throughout the years have either
improved humanitarian conditions or became under tremendous scrutiny by the public for its lack of
assistance. In addition, there have been many technological advances made to help people prepare
before and after the storm. Hurricanes have altered many people's lives in one way or another and
have caused people to always be prepared for potential impact.

Between 2000 and 2006, there was more than a 50% drop in population (NOAA). The NOAA said,

Electrical Hazards And Safety By Kevin Burke
Electrical Hazards and Safety
Kevin Burke
1. INTRODUCTION
Everywhere nowadays there is electricity and devices that rely on electricity. Society is driven by
the need for energy and "electricity generating plants now consume two–fifths of U.S. energy from
all sources, including about 90% of America's coal and nearly 30% of its natural gas"
(http://needtoknow.nas.edu/energy/energy–sources/electricity/). The world today would not be
nearly as advanced had it not been for the increased use of electricity. Electricity has so many uses
they are seemingly innumerable, from use in air conditioners to cool people down. To making sure
that individuals can see in everyday life with the use of lighting, the list could go on forever.
However with this massive increase in electricity use there are also very drastic safety precautions
that must be followed to ensure safe use of electrical products. Safety is a huge part of using
electricity because having even a low voltage travel through the human body can kill someone.
From a very young age it is instilled that electricity is not something to play with and that adults
should make sure an activity is safe.
Safety is not only important for humans but also for the infrastructure of the electrical components.
People should ensure that they use surge protector and all of their wires are safe and not stripped.
This will guarantee safety for the products in their homes. It is crucial that anything that has

Disaster, Characteristics And Management Stages Essay
Disaster Characteristics and Management Stages
The purpose of this paper is to examine a recent natural disaster. The number of natural disasters has
risen dramatically in the past two decades. Natural disasters are increasing exponentially and
creating expanding amounts of destruction each year. A recent natural disaster to examine is the
flooding in Louisiana August 2016. This paper will discuss the type of disaster, characteristics of the
disaster, and the application of disaster management stages.
Current Natural Disaster
The morning of August 13th, Baton Rouge and much of southern Louisiana were devastated by
extreme flooding after 20 inches of rain hit the area in a 48 hour period. Rescue teams are calling it
the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy. This flood has
damaged 60,000 homes, leaving an estimated 30,000 people displaced from their homes (CNN,
2016). The federal government declared this a major disaster killing at least 13 people, flooding
thousands of homes, and prompting thousands of water rescues (The Weather Channel, 2016).
Type of Disaster
There are three different types of disasters, man–made, natural, or a combination of both (Nies &
McEwen, 2015). The flooding in Louisiana was a natural disaster. Unfortunately, in the past ten
years there has been a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of natural weather–related
disasters (Veenema et al., 2016). Flooding is most common in the United

The American National Red Cross Essay
The American National Red Cross: Financial Management under Congressional and Public Scrutiny
Introduction Every America student in grade school learns about the Red Cross symbol, the
infamous Clara Barton and her heroic work as the Angel of Battlefield across the globe, and her
eventual appointment as president of the American Red Cross (ARC). In 1900, Congress awarded
the ARC the first federal charter. In 1905, one year after Clara Barton resigned over scrutiny
involving her management styles, the US Congress overhauled the organization's charter and by–
laws (AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS, Petitioner, v. S.G. and A.E., 1992). Today, her
legacy can be seen all across the globe as millions of volunteers work to rebuild after national
disasters, war, and to help wounded soldiers and global citizens receive medical care, medical
supplies, and other humanitarian efforts such as food and water. However, one–hundred years later
in 2005 to present, the ARC is once again in the spotlight over financial management scrutiny. It
would appear that since 2005 Congressional and public scrutiny has intensified as Congress and the
public raise questions about the ARC's distribution of funds, financial management planning, and
oversight of distribution of charitable funds. The purpose of this research paper is three parts; 1) to
discuss why the ARC is under congressional and public scrutiny; 2) examine the 2015 Financial
Statement including the available financial records, financial

My Favorite Place At The World Is The State Of Oregon
Oregon
My favorite place in the world is the state of Oregon. The reason for this being my favorite place is
because of how green and simply beautiful this place is. I have had the fortune of getting to visit this
state twice. I even took a train ride home from Washington through Oregon down to California. I
must add the scenery is seriously beautiful. I have never seen so many trees in my life. The name
Oregon means windstorm or hurricane. The reason they gave it this name is because of the powerful
chinook winds of the Columbia River that blows through this state. I also wanted to do this place
because they are known for their cheese and ice cream from the Tillamook brand. They also have a
lot of wild berries growing and have about 80 national parks you can visit. In Cannon Beach there is
the famous Haystack rock. Haystack rock is 235 ft tall and is home to wildlife. It also has made
great tidepools full of marine life. Crater lake happens to be the deepest lake in the United States
and the second deepest in all of North America. It also ranks number 9 in the world. The way this
massively deep lake was formed was due to the collapse of a volcano ,known as Mount Mazama. Its
max depth is 1.949ft. Oregon consists of 6 different areas. The coast, Klamath mountains ,

When thinking about volcanic outcrops, one generally thinks of islands and plate boundaries such as
the northwestern coast of the United States, Hawaii, or New Zealand. However, 1.4 billion years
ago, super volcanoes characterized the Midwestern United States. Today, the Midwest is known for
its' rather simple "layer cake geology." The Midwest is a part of the North American Craton,
meaning that it has remained relatively stable for the past 600 million years. Thus, a volcanic field is
definitely not the first thought to pop into someone's mind when thinking about this region.

We went on a weekend trip to Fredericktown, Missouri and stopped at different locations in the area
trying to understand the different igneous features we were seeing. The area is packed with igneous
exposures from columnar basalts, Precambrian basement rock, granitic ring complexes, volcanic
ejecta, to mantle xenoliths. Together, these features provide insight into the overall geology of the
region, indicating that this terrain was once an active nested caldera complex (multitude of calderas
within calderas). The highly silicic nature of these rocks indicates that calderas formed from the
collapsing of rhyolitic dome structures, which sometimes in geologic literature is referred to as
"super volcanoes." The "super volcanoes" here are thought to have formed, the way many calderas
do, by a subsurface pluton pushing its way up into the crust and erupting. Once the plutonic material
erupts, the land subsides and the central part of the once outstretched region becomes a crater, which
is termed caldera. In the case of the St. Francois Mountains and the highly silicic volcanics that are
found in the region the plutonic source is potentially granitic in nature. However, there are mafic
exposures, which are result of occasional basalt and mafic melts making their way to the surface
through mantle source. Geologically, the St.Francois Mountains are complex, and as a regional
feature, I do not know the entire evolutionary history for their

Analysis Of ' Gee I Wish I Were A Man '
During World War one, the United States Navy Recruiting Bureau, and the United States Treasury
Department each commissioned posters featuring women who encouraged citizens to participate in
the war effort. The two posters, despite being intended for the same purpose, depict women in
particularly contrasting light. Analysis of the contrasting war posters can help illustrate society's
perspective about women during the early 1900's, their expected roles pertaining to the war effort,
the strategies used to engage citizens and encourage them to become involved, and the use of
imagery and symbolism that were used to achieve the posters' objective.
In the first poster, Gee I Wish I Were a Man, created by Howard Chandler Christy for the United
States Navy Recruiting Bureau, depicts a cute, flirtatious women wearing an enlisted navy man's

The Great War : The Mobilization Of Women
THE GREAT WAR: THE MOBILIZATION OF WOMEN In 1914 the Great War, later known as
World War I, erupted throughout Europe. With isolationism's strong hold on the American
government, it was not until 1917 that the United States entered the war on the side of the Allies.
With this new challenge facing the United States, propaganda began to dominate the majority of
images produced in the United States during this period. With the bulk of the male population
overseas much of the propaganda was geared in the direction of women. Propaganda imagery during
World War I emphasized women's traditional roles in order to mobilize all women for the war effort.
By appealing to traditional roles, war propaganda campaigns were able to mobilize women to help
the war effort through economics and volunteering. However, the campaigns still enforced the old
customary female ideals. Any war fought throughout history has needed a funding source, World
War I was no exception. Funds were needed to send and supply the men overseas fighting. During
World War I, much of the funding for the war effort came from female citizens purchasing Liberty
Bonds. To achieve maximum profits Liberty Bonds sales campaigns made an effort to appeal to
many different aspects of the female demographic. Figure I directly appeals to the biological
maternal instincts of women. The propaganda poster even directly mentions the pleas of mothers

ethics, ARC and KRC triangle, Afterlife, God, and Science. The bridge to total freedom is the means
by which Scientologists undertake personal life development. The Bridge is broken down into two
parallel paths, Training and Processing. The Training path teaches Hubbard's theories on the nature
of life and the universe also known as auditing and the processing path is the actual practice of
"auditing". Auditing is basically the application of Dianetics. Dianetics is a set of ideas and practices
regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body, which was created by L. Ron
Hubbard and is practiced by followers of Scientology. ARC and KRC triangles are concept maps
made up of of three concepts each. These two triangles are presented in the Scientology logo. The
KRC triangle concepts are known as knowledge, responsibility and control. The ARC triangle
concepts are known as affinity, reality and communication. These six concepts will be later
explained with the scientology logo. Scientologists also believe in afterlife and science. In
Scientology the human body is regarded as similar to that of other religions in that the spirit will
leave the body once the person is dead. Even though scientologist believe in afterlife the church still

  • 1. What Is The American Red Cross Ethical Responsibility Assignment 1 "The American Red Cross" Chantill Toyer Strayer University HRM522 Ethical & Advocacy for HR Professionals Dr. Jeanette Horner–Smith October 26, 2014 ABSTRACT Whether you open a business or a nonprofit organization one has to have a vision and mission for that organization. An organizational mission is the goals one is aiming towards. The mission of the American Red Cross (ARC) is to "prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors" (American Red Cross, 2014). However, there are documented and undocumented times when an organization does not abide by the values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It plays important roles in society by placing public service above profit. They use a network of donors, volunteers and employees around the world to relieve suffering by servicing five areas: disaster relief, blood donations, providing support for American military families, providing health and safety services and giving support through international humanitarian services. Although they exist as a not–for–profit enterprise, business ethics are still essential to the success of any organization. The American Red Cross has received the highest ethical performance from its employees and volunteers because they give a responsible to the society (American Red Cross, 2011). In September of 2011 terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. Almost 3,000 people die and more than 6,000 were injured and in need of help. The American Red Cross raised more than 500 million dollars in response to the 9/11 attacks. There was a problem because they only distributed 154 million dollars in aid. The question than became where the money went. The American Red Cross claimed the money that was donated went into a big pool of money that was distributed by the company's corporate governance (The Socialist Worker, 2005). In addition, The American Red Cross urged people to donate blood even though the blood was not needed at that time and a good amount of it was destroyed. In the end, The American criticized by the

Business ethics includes the principles and standards that guide behavior in the world of business. The ethical behavior of a company is being judged and determined by its stakeholders. They may not always be right but their judgment affects the company's reputation in society. There are several benefits of business ethics. This did not sit well with donors or with government officials. A congressional hearing took place to look into the American Red Cross's actions. They were forced to address their stakeholders concerns and demands. The American Red Cross's reputation was damaged by their actions in the aftermath of this disaster. With the devastation of hurricane Katrina, the American Red Cross's reputation was again damaged by their actions. The relief efforts were viewed as inadequate by the public. "These subpar emergency responses were the outcome of a host of fraudulent, questionable, and inefficient decisions made by the ARC, as well as its federal, state, and local disaster relief counterparts" (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2011, p. 331). There was a communications issue between FEMA and the American Red Cross and a disagreement on the roles and responsibilities of each agency. Another issue in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina was the mismanagement of funds and volunteers. "The accusations include the improper diversion of relief supplies, failure to follow Red Cross procedures in tracking and distributing supplies, and use of felons as volunteers in the disaster area in violation of Red Cross rules" (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2011, p. 331). The devastation was overwhelming and the amount of volunteers was more than they have ever seen. Because of this they did not go through their normal screening process. It has been there to help during World Wars, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, blood donations etc. It has helped millions of people during tragic times. They had to have tech employee's work round the clock to make sure the websites could handle the amount of traffic it received. Another ethical problem is, trusting its leaders and workers implicitly. Times have changed and we cannot have that. People in today's world do not have the same morale fiber that they used to have when we were little. Organizations like the Red Cross now need to come up with better ethical standards. They have done so by not having too many people at the top. Instead of 50 they now have 20. They also need to have controls in place that will ensure that employee misconduct will no longer be a problem. In addition people need to be trained in ethics and be made to sign ethical documents that spell out the companies ethical procedures, which the Red Cross has done. • 14. Tilted Arc The Destruction of Public Art Tilted Arc (Figure 1) was brought down on the 15th of March of 1989 by the General Services Administration (GSA) in the centre of New York's federal plaza. Tilted Arc was a site specific work of a curved steel wall or barrier, that was 120 feet long and 12 feet high, with an arch that gave the effect of the wall leaning inwards. The GSA commissioned Richard Serra to build a sculpture for the 'Art–in–Architecture' program that would be placed in the plaza in front of the Jacob K Davits Federal building. The work was set up in 1981 and received a few critical comments. However, it was only when William Diamond, an appointee GSA New York Regional Administrator, started to investigate a bit more that he created substantial arguments against the sculpture to try and relocate it. Tilted Arc then became a controversial piece of work that involved the art world and major associations and resulted in a lawsuit and public hearing in 1985. The main issues that surrounded the controversy relate to the way in which the space was transformed, the rights of the artist, and censorship. In addition, we must question the role of public art in society, if certain works should be considered "public art," and the ways in which power and politics can influence the arts. The actual foundation for EMS originated during the Civil War in America and served as the model for future civilian EMS development. The most noticeable improvement was the use of helicopters as a mode of medical evacuation to quickly remove injured soldiers from the battlefield. During the Vietnam War modifications were made for helicopters used to transport wounded soldiers. The helicopters were known as HU–1 or Huey. Civilian EMS originated with the first civilian manufactured ambulance produced in 1890 and built by the Hess–Eisenhardt Company in Cincinnati. The ambulance was a horse drawn wagon specifically designed to move injured patients. The first electric motorized ambulance was made in Chicago in 1899 and donated to the Michael Reese Hospital by local businessmen. This became obvious in the movie Joan of Arc, where the majority of dinner conversations related to their religious beliefs, as it was important to pass on the importance and need for religion to the future generations. Unity was a very powerful tool during this time period because power came in numbers. This was obvious when Joan gathered the community and convinced the people to defend their beliefs and fight back against the English. Since the people were united in their faith, it was much easier to defend their territories and beliefs. Thus, religion had tremendous positive effects. As a result, Twain presented Joan of Arc as an aspirational benchmark set for the generation of young girls that would be affected by the Women's Suffrage Movement by emphasising her humble beginnings as a peasant and achievements despite the overwhelming odds stacked against her. Twain's representation of Joan is largely dictated by this context, and personal reasons. He had a daughter named Susy, who Joan is said to be modelled after. Safety is a huge part of using electricity because having even a low voltage travel through the human body can kill someone. From a very young age it is instilled that electricity is not something to play with and that adults should make sure an activity is safe. The number of natural disasters has risen dramatically in the past two decades. Natural disasters are increasing exponentially and creating expanding amounts of destruction each year. A recent natural disaster to examine is the flooding in Louisiana August 2016. This paper will discuss the type of disaster, characteristics of the disaster, and the application of disaster management stages. Current Natural Disaster The morning of August 13th, Baton Rouge and much of southern Louisiana were devastated by extreme flooding after 20 inches of rain hit the area in a 48 hour period. Rescue teams are calling it the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy. This flood has damaged 60,000 homes, leaving an estimated 30,000 people displaced from their homes (CNN, 2016). The federal government declared this a major disaster killing at least 13 people, flooding thousands of homes, and prompting thousands of water rescues (The Weather Channel, 2016). Type of Disaster There are three different types of disasters, man–made, natural, or a combination of both (Nies & McEwen, 2015). The flooding in Louisiana was a natural disaster. Unfortunately, in the past ten years there has been a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of natural weather–related disasters (Veenema et al., 2016). The American National Red Cross Essay The American National Red Cross: Financial Management under Congressional and Public Scrutiny Introduction Every America student in grade school learns about the Red Cross symbol, the infamous Clara Barton and her heroic work as the Angel of Battlefield across the globe, and her eventual appointment as president of the American Red Cross (ARC). In 1900, Congress awarded the ARC the first federal charter. In 1905, one year after Clara Barton resigned over scrutiny involving her management styles, the US Congress overhauled the organization's charter and by– laws (AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS, Petitioner, v. S.G. and A.E., 1992). Today, her legacy can be seen all across the globe as millions of volunteers work to rebuild after national disasters, war, and to help wounded soldiers and global citizens receive medical care, medical supplies, and other humanitarian efforts such as food and water. However, one–hundred years later in 2005 to present, the ARC is once again in the spotlight over financial management scrutiny. It would appear that since 2005 Congressional and public scrutiny has intensified as Congress and the public raise questions about the ARC's distribution of funds, financial management planning, and oversight of distribution of charitable funds. The purpose of this research paper is three parts; 1) to discuss why the ARC is under congressional and public scrutiny; 2) examine the 2015 Financial Statement including the available financial records, financial ... The reason for this being my favorite place is because of how green and simply beautiful this place is. I have had the fortune of getting to visit this state twice. I even took a train ride home from Washington through Oregon down to California. I must add the scenery is seriously beautiful. I have never seen so many trees in my life. The name Oregon means windstorm or hurricane. The reason they gave it this name is because of the powerful chinook winds of the Columbia River that blows through this state. I also wanted to do this place because they are known for their cheese and ice cream from the Tillamook brand. They also have a lot of wild berries growing and have about 80 national parks you can visit. In Cannon Beach there is the famous Haystack rock. Haystack rock is 235 ft tall and is home to wildlife. It also has made great tidepools full of marine life. Crater lake happens to be the deepest lake in the United States and the second deepest in all of North America. It also ranks number 9 in the world. The way this massively deep lake was formed was due to the collapse of a volcano ,known as Mount Mazama. Its max depth is 1.949ft. Oregon consists of 6 different areas. The coast, Klamath mountains , Willamette lowlands,Cascade Mountains, Columbia Plateau , and the basin and range region. • 65. The St. Francois Mountains When thinking about volcanic outcrops, one generally thinks of islands and plate boundaries such as the northwestern coast of the United States, Hawaii, or New Zealand. However, 1.4 billion years ago, super volcanoes characterized the Midwestern United States. Today, the Midwest is known for its' rather simple "layer cake geology." The Midwest is a part of the North American Craton, meaning that it has remained relatively stable for the past 600 million years. Thus, a volcanic field is definitely not the first thought to pop into someone's mind when thinking about this region. However, the Midwest is home to the St. Francois Mountains, which is a topic that is under represented in the geologic curriculum. The St. Francois Mountains are located ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We went on a weekend trip to Fredericktown, Missouri and stopped at different locations in the area trying to understand the different igneous features we were seeing. The area is packed with igneous exposures from columnar basalts, Precambrian basement rock, granitic ring complexes, volcanic ejecta, to mantle xenoliths. Together, these features provide insight into the overall geology of the region, indicating that this terrain was once an active nested caldera complex (multitude of calderas within calderas). The highly silicic nature of these rocks indicates that calderas formed from the collapsing of rhyolitic dome structures, which sometimes in geologic literature is referred to as "super volcanoes." The "super volcanoes" here are thought to have formed, the way many calderas do, by a subsurface pluton pushing its way up into the crust and erupting. Once the plutonic material erupts, the land subsides and the central part of the once outstretched region becomes a crater, which is termed caldera. In the case of the St. Francois Mountains and the highly silicic volcanics that are found in the region the plutonic source is potentially granitic in nature. However, there are mafic exposures, which are result of occasional basalt and mafic melts making their way to the surface through mantle source. Geologically, the St.Francois Mountains are complex, and as a regional feature, I do not know the entire evolutionary history for their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When doing this he used a peach basket as the rim and after doing this founded the university of Kansas basketball program. He was born in Canada, where he studied physical education at McGill University at Montreal before moving to the United States. After he founded the Kansas City Jayhawks basketball team, he seven years later decided to be the coach of the team. While coaching he had the honor of coaching phog Allen, who then became coach after Naismith and coached for 39 seasons, creating a great coaching tree in the Jayhawks system. And actually quick fact is that is that Naismith is still the only coach in the Jayhawks despite coaching his final season in 1907 is the only coach in Kansas City Jayhawks men's basketball to end a season with a losing record. Soon after he created basketball and he formed a team with the Jayhawks basketball just blew up, all over it was becoming a something big. In June 1946 something ... Analysis Of ' Gee I Wish I Were A Man ' During World War one, the United States Navy Recruiting Bureau, and the United States Treasury Department each commissioned posters featuring women who encouraged citizens to participate in the war effort. The two posters, despite being intended for the same purpose, depict women in particularly contrasting light. Analysis of the contrasting war posters can help illustrate society's perspective about women during the early 1900's, their expected roles pertaining to the war effort, the strategies used to engage citizens and encourage them to become involved, and the use of imagery and symbolism that were used to achieve the posters' objective. In the first poster, Gee I Wish I Were a Man, created by Howard Chandler Christy for the United States Navy Recruiting Bureau, depicts a cute, flirtatious women wearing an enlisted navy man's dress blues, while declaring in bright red text to her left, "Gee!! I wish I were a man, I 'd join the Navy" while the names of the two departments of the navy are advertised below. The woman, who is adorned in a loose set of service dress blues, subtly flashes her bare shoulder while hiking up an invisible pair of suspenders and smiling good naturedly to herself. Wind sweeps at her hair and hat, and lifts up her jumper and neckerchief which adds movement to the poster, but also directs the eye to her internal thoughts, written out on the page in bright red ink. • 73. The Great War : The Mobilization Of Women THE GREAT WAR: THE MOBILIZATION OF WOMEN In 1914 the Great War, later known as World War I, erupted throughout Europe. With isolationism's strong hold on the American government, it was not until 1917 that the United States entered the war on the side of the Allies. With this new challenge facing the United States, propaganda began to dominate the majority of images produced in the United States during this period. With the bulk of the male population overseas much of the propaganda was geared in the direction of women. Propaganda imagery during World War I emphasized women's traditional roles in order to mobilize all women for the war effort. By appealing to traditional roles, war propaganda campaigns were able to mobilize women to help the war effort through economics and volunteering. However, the campaigns still enforced the old customary female ideals. Any war fought throughout history has needed a funding source, World War I was no exception. Funds were needed to send and supply the men overseas fighting. During World War I, much of the funding for the war effort came from female citizens purchasing Liberty Bonds. To achieve maximum profits Liberty Bonds sales campaigns made an effort to appeal to many different aspects of the female demographic. Figure I directly appeals to the biological maternal instincts of women. The propaganda poster even directly mentions the pleas of mothers across the ocean for their children's lives. • 77. Joan Of Arc And The Three Heroes Of The Present People have many ideas and different ways of thinking of what makes a person a hero. A hero can be defined as a person that is recognized and known for their acts of courage, has achieved a great accomplishment or goal, or has noble qualities. According to Akbar S. Ahmed, a hero is someone who is endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind, sets out to achieve a near– impossible goal and succeeds in the face of serious opposition (8). This research paper will analyze the acts of three heroes from the past (pre–1700) with three heroes of the present (1950 to present). He is also well known for his explorations and as a cartographer. Smith's map of Virginia was considered to be the map of the region for 60 years. According to Cooper, "John Smith deserves, perhaps, a place among the iconic founding father figures of the nation." (6). Smith was one of the original governing council members and his explorations were a part of what shaped the nation. Cooper also stated, "As a council member in the Jamestown settlement and because of his explorations, his map, and its role in attracting settlers, John Smith helped shape his time and the future." (6). Smith would meet Ahmed's definition of a hero because he was endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind. The council was proving to be ineffective so Smith stepped forward as the leader and "the moving spirit" (Arber, xiii) to lead the expeditions. The colonists were suffering from malnutrition due to the lack of food, disease, and Indian attacks. Smith set out to achieve a near impossible goal when he chose to lead the expeditions and traded with the Indians for food, which was also dangerous and led to his capture by the Indians. The Training path teaches Hubbard's theories on the nature of life and the universe also known as auditing and the processing path is the actual practice of "auditing". Auditing is basically the application of Dianetics. Dianetics is a set of ideas and practices regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body, which was created by L. Ron Hubbard and is practiced by followers of Scientology. ARC and KRC triangles are concept maps made up of of three concepts each. These two triangles are presented in the Scientology logo.
