Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), "The United States ranks first among developed
nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases" (Stanger–Hall, Kathrin
F., and David W. Hall, paragraph 1). In 2015, there were a total of 229,715 babies born to teen
moms between the ages of 15–19 (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 1). It is not just
becoming a problem; it has been a problem for a while. It does not help the problem when there are
"reality" television shows making it look glamorous to be a young mom. Shows like "Teen Mom"
and "16 and Pregnant" makes it seem like no matter what goes wrong, everything always ends
happily ever after. Unfortunately, for most people (teen moms included) life is not a fairy tale, not
everyone gets a happily ever after.
There are many reasons why we need to decrease teen pregnancy rates. The first of which is the
economic costs. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) "In 2010, teen
pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased
health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax
revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers" (Reproductive
Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 9).
Having a screaming child around does not make it easy study. Teenage parents have a significantly

Teenage Pregnancy And Low Birth Weight Rates
Teenage pregnancies have been a critical issue that affects young women all over the world. In some
cultures it is normal for teenagers to have children, whereas in America it is looked down on. In
"Teenage Pregnancy in the United States" by James Trussell, a professor at Princeton University, he
states "one out of every 10 women aged 15–19 in the United States becomes pregnant each year...
there will be about 837,000 pregnancies among women aged 15–19, and another 23,000 among
those aged 14 and younger" (Trussell 262). There are many reasons why teenage pregnancies may
occur, but there are many consequences that come with young mothers bearing children. Many
scholars discuss low birth weight rates as a problem related to teenage mothers, which leads to the
research question if the percentage of teenage pregnancies increased in 2014 in the United States
then the low birth weight rates increased as well. Some of the scholars that focus on the idea that
teenage pregnancy has an influence on low birth weight rates are Jeffrey Roth, a research assistant
professor at the University of Florida, Jo Hendrickson, a professor at the University of Iowa, Max
Schilling, the Program Director at Florida Network on Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting, and
Prevention and Daniel W. Stowell, the Associate Publications Editor at the University of Illinois. In
their article "The Risk of Teen Mothers having Low Birth Weight Babies: Implications of Recent
Medical Research for School Health Personnel"

Factors That Affect The Rate Of The Pregnancy
OT plays a major role in the initiation of labor particularly during the expulsive phase by stimulating
prostaglandin release in species, specifically in the uterine epithelium. Blanks and Thornton (2003)
study revealed that secretion of oxytocin is at its maximum level during fetal delivery of pups but
the amount of OT released during expulsion of the pups varies among species. According to them,
oxytocin is at its peak at the time of delivery of the first fetus in rabbit, and throughout labor with
greater pulses overlapping with pup's expulsion in rats. Variations in oxytocin level are also seen
during the pregnancy and labor in humans. According to Blanks and Thornton (2003) several
discrepancies are present when in OT is measured in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This suggests that OT is critical for the ejection of milk but not parturition. Additionally, after
injecting OT on OT null mice and wild type mice, the start of premature labor within 24hrs was
observed at high concentrations of OT in both wild and null mice (Blanks & Thornton, 2003). With
that in mind, abnormal modification of OT action does influence the start of labor. In conclusion,
they put forward the idea that OT receptor in mice is mostly invested in the timing for the initiation
of labor. Most importantly, the OT receptor is essential for normal labor because those receptors are
found in abundance in uterine epithelium during late pregnancy promoting contractile effects. Along
with those findings, female rats that are undergone a knockout of OT, showed a decreased in
maternal care of their pups but displayed a higher level of aggression (Bales & Perkeybile, 2012).
Social rearing conditions plays a role in the binding of OT. Prairie voles, when differently handled
by experimenters a week after being born resulted in more OTR binding (Bales et al 2011). When
changing the animal's cages, experimenters carried the parent prairies vole by the scruff of the neck
and others were not touched. Those females that had careful attention and handling by the
experimenters displayed an increase in OTR binding. The same results were reported in males. They
concluded that the type of maintenance that pups received in early days after being born does affect

Teen Pregnancy Rates On Canada
Abstract:
This report takes an in–depth look at the teen pregnancy rates in Canada. Comparing the trends in
Canadian provinces mainly focused on the trends in Ontario. Teen pregnancy rates have drastically
falling from a report completed in the 1970's where the pregnancy rate amongst teen girls between
the ages of 15–19 years old. In the 1970's, teen pregnancy was amongst the highest rates Canada has
ever seen. This report also focuses on the reasons teen pregnancy is prevalent in the following
provinces and the effects after the birth of the child, what factors play a role in these mothers giving
birth which include; family circumstances and the position poverty plays. Comprehensive research
has been done over the last few years following ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Could it be that Canada is a desired place to raise children from the amount of assistance the
Government gives? Findings include; where education is low, poverty is as well. Socio economics
without question play a role in teen pregnancy rates.
Thesis
In certain provinces, teen pregnancy rates appear to be declining, however in other provinces rates
appear to be rising. In provinces like Winnipeg, Calgary and Ontario rates have been the highest
Canada has seen within the last 40 years. Evidence has suggested that socio–economics played a
major role in the fluctuation of teen pregnancy rates. Teen girls who lacked in education were more
likely to become pregnant and also live below the poverty lines. Canada's decrease in teen
pregnancy rates were a result of contraceptives becoming more available in public places such as
schools, and within their personal lives. However in communities north of the GTA, there are higher
rates of pregnancy. Aboriginal do not have the same accessibility as others do, which is why teen
pregnancy rates are above the national average. Other reasons contributing to the rise of pregnancy
with first nation teen girls are the socio–economics as well as factors leading to oppression within
that community. Teens trying to finish school while pregnant have less successful rates of gaining
more education because of the high cost of raising their

Rate Of Teen Pregnancies In The United States
One crucial question is what is the rate of teen pregnancies in the United States? According to the
article "Teen Pregnancy Facts", "About 750,000 teens become pregnant each year." That adds up to
roughly 0.24% of the United States' overall population. Though, not a substantial amount, it still
generates an abundance of issues; not only for the mother and child, but also for the country as teen
moms are many times in need of government assistance and/or welfare.
An increased rate of teenage mothers causes an increased need for government assistance and/or
welfare, which in turn, creates more government debt. One article previously used, "Teen
Pregnancy facts", emphasizes that "More than 75% of teen mothers need welfare within 5 years ...

An umpteen amount of parents, schools, and even trusted adults believe teaching abstinence–only
will prevent teen pregnancy, but in all reality, that method does not sufficiently keep teenagers from
having sex–– safe sex, for that matter. That is where the controversial argument on contraceptives
begins. A great amount of teenagers has sex; it's inevitable. "American Teens' Sexual and
Reproductive Health" states that 71% of teenagers has sex before their nineteenth birthday.
Proving that not only a great amount of teenagers has sex, but a majority of them do. The most
obvious and prevailing problem is the prevention of unprotected sex and unplanned teen pregnancy.
Though, some states do permit teenagers to have access to contraceptives without parental consent,
other states do not, thus, bringing up the question as to why some teen girls have those rights, but
others do not.
At the time, twenty–one states in the U.S. permit all minors to contraceptive services, however,
twenty–five states "explicitly permit minors to consent to contraceptive services in one or more
circumstances" ("State Policies In Brief"). Focusing on the twenty–one states, that

The Decline In Teen Pregnancy Rates Over the last few decades the rates in teen pregnancy have
been a debate; did they rise over the past few years or did they actually decline? Contrary to some
doctors and politicians the numbers associated with teen pregnancy have decline over the last couple
of years. Although there are still people out there who believe this to be an issue it's made more of
an issue than it actually is. The ads and commercials are set out to scare teen–agers into believing
that were at an all time high for this issue, but realistically its actually the exact opposite. Teen
pregnancy rates haven't dropped on there over the course of the years. There are a few major factors
that have contributed a great deal to this change. Those changes include but are not limited to: more
resources being available to these teenagers to prevent themselves from becoming pregnant, society
is more open to talking about this issue as well as the religion and culture change aspect of families
today. Despite the beliefs of others, teen pregnancy rates are at an all time low for the first time in
decades. In fact there are a few things that impacted the decline in teen pregnancy, one of which was
the society has opened up to this topic of conversation. It's not something that's kept behind closed
door like it use to be. Talking about sexual education in local school systems was a big impact on

Teenage Pregnancy Rates Among Ethnicities
Teen Pregnancy Rates Among Ethnicities

Teenage pregnancy has been viewed as an issue for many years, not only for teenage mothers but for
babies as well. Much importance has been placed on this subject for the reason that although these
rates are declining, they remain elevated. The United States represents over 600,000 American teen
pregnancies every year, making this the highest rate in the industrialized world (Steinberg, 2017).
Unfortunately, ethnic minorities in the United States have a predisposition to the many social,
educational and economic disadvantages that in fact shape adolescent sexual behavior and lead to
the decision of adolescent motherhood. This paper will illustrate teenage pregnancy rates over the
last few years, the factors that impact teen pregnancy, contraception and the likelihood of teen
pregnancies across different ethnic groups. Over the years, the rate of adolescent pregnancy in the
United States has been declining by nearly 40% since the 1990's. (Brown, 2016) Adolescent
pregnancy rates have decreased across the nation for adolescents belonging to any racial and ethnic
group. (Brown, 2016) It seems that adolescents are making smarter decisions considering that there
is 77% decline in pregnancy risk. Adolescent pregnancy risk is positively correlated with greater use
of condoms by 58% and birth control methods by 39%.

Cause And Effect Of The Pregnancy Rate During The First...
According to The March of Dimes (2016) miscarriage, particularly in the first trimester, has an
overall estimated incidence of 10 to 15%. However, the number could be as high as 50% when
taking into account pregnancies which had not yet been discovered (March of Dimes,
2016). Concern regarding miscarriage is universal yet in women taking an antidepressant this
concern increases as researchers have theorized that its use may increase the potential for
spontaneous abortion. Two large scale studies by Andersen et al., (2014) and Kjaersgaard et al.,
(2013) documented increased miscarriage rates although a direct correlation between SSRI use and
spontaneous abortion was not identified. These two prospective studies combined evaluated ... Show

So while increased miscarriage rates have been documented in the research, the authors' conclusions
directed implication away from SSRI use and focused rather on other possible causative factors.
PREGNANCY, SSRI USE AND NEONATAL OUTCOMES 8
SSRIs do not seem to be implicated in spontaneous abortion and their role in stillbirth and
postneonatal mortality follows similar lines. The increase in both stillbirth and postneonatal
mortality found in the studies by Andersen et al., (2014), Jimenez–Solem et al., ( 2013) &
Stephansson et al., (2013) are likely attributed to severity of disease and comorbidity factors such as
increased tobacco and alcohol use, elevated BMI, and or higher maternal age. None of these studies
concluded that SSRI use was a causative factor, but rather focused on depression and the common
health risks which often accompany the diagnosis. Overall, review of the current literature finds no
direct causal relationship between SSRI use and miscarriage, stillbirth or postneonatal mortality
(Andersen et al., Jimenez–Solem et al., 2013, Kjaersgaard et al., 2013 & Stephansson et al., 2013).
This does not eliminate an indirect causal relationship from malformations such as persistent
pulmonary hypertension, anencephaly, craniosynostosis, or omphalocele.

Abstinence-Only Education And Teen Pregnancy Rates
Sex education, arguably one of the most controversial topics to surface in American politics over the
past half century, poses a complicated problem to citizens and lawmakers alike. Following the AIDS
epidemic and spike in teen pregnancy in the 1980s, lawmakers and educators began drafting and
implementing more sex education classes and courses in public schools in an attempt to remedy the
ever–growing issue. While few object to the idea in itself, the method and content of its teaching is
highly controversial. Should we teach abstinence or safe sex? How early should children be exposed
to this material? How effective are these classes? These are just a few questions surrounding the
issue, which are often disputed.

either simply present or back their standing on the issue. Coupling the three pieces with my prior
knowledge of the subject as well as personal experience, I can confidently say that I am indeed 'pro
sexual education'. More specifically, I prefer programs in which safe sex is taught thoroughly, but
teens are highly encouraged to sublimate their sexual desires until adulthood. However, I might add,
this was my original stance; nothing presented in any of the works against sexual education as a
whole were persuasive enough to change my view on the subject. Rather, the articles simply
reinforced, or rather reaffirmed, my

The Rate Of Unwanted Teenage Pregnancies And Sexually...
The rates of unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are drastically
increasing. Sexual Education has become an effective way of enforcing safety precautions and
informing teens about healthy sexual activity. Sexual Education is the act of educating others about
intercourse, the anatomy of the human body, sexual reproduction, abstinence, and contraceptives.
Elizabeth Boskey, a STD expert, believes that schools should teach sex education because of the
positive effects it has on the students. However, Sol Gordon believes that the parents should be
responsible for teaching their children about sex. Even though Elizabeth Boskey and Sol Gordon
take different stances on how sex education should be taught, they both agree that children should be
educated about sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, and safe sex. In Elizabeth Boskey's
article, "Top 10 Reasons to Support Comprehensive Education in Schools" she supports sexual
education being taught in school. Boskey believes that schools cover the whole spectrum about safe
sex and that schools effectively teach the students. She proves that not only do the schools teach
abstinence, but the schools also teach their students how to engage in safe sex. Teaching the kids
about abstinence doesn't discourage the kids from engaging in sexual intercourse but teaching the
kids about safe sex will allow them to engage in sex safely without endangering each other (Boskey
Par. 2). The school also presents

Teenage Pregnancy : The Birth Rates Of Teen Parents
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), "in 2015, a total of 229,715 babies were born
to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 22.3 per 1,000 women in this age group. This is
another record low for U.S. teens and a drop of 8% from 2014. Birth rates fell 9% for women aged
15–17 years and 7% for women aged 18–19 years." Teenage pregnancy is characterized as an
adolescent girl, for the most part between the ages of thirteen and nineteen, conceiving a child. The
term in everyday context for the most part alludes to girls who have not achieved the legal age of
adulthood, which fluctuates across the world, who end up pregnant. Teenage pregnancy is
something that affects more than one million teenagers in the United States. For a few these
pregnancies are planned, yet eighty–five percent of these pregnancies are unplanned. Although there
are many pregnancies still occuring, teenage pregnancy rates are decreasing each year, the
relationship between child and parent is much stronger in teen parent relationships, and there are
several stereotypes against teen mothers.
Although there are a vast amount of teen pregnancies, the rates of teenage pregnancy are steadily
decreasing each year. The birth rate has dropped by nine percent since the year of 2015 and it has
dropped sixty–seven percent since 1991 (Scutti). Teenage pregnancy rates are steadily decreasing
due to there being more, "access to contraceptives and use of contraceptives" (Berlan). Another

Teen Pregnancy And The Teenage Pregnancy Rates
Pregnancy and parenthood is a significantly life– altering event that anyone could experience. These
two life events inquire not only physical but mental obstacles. What happens when these events
occur when your body is not physically developed and your mental maturity is not fully ripened?
This happens too often amongst the teen age population. In the United States, teen pregnancies are
the highest when compared to other developed countries. Teen births account for 10% of all births in
the United States. (NCHS) While the only way to solve this issue is to educate teens on prevention,
Hispanics continue to have the highest teen pregnancy rates because lack of financial resources, lack
of formal sexual education, and cultural beliefs.
With Hispanic teenagers accounting for over a quarter of teenage pregnancy there are many factors
affecting the Hispanic communities and families that cause these numbers to be so high. And at 53%
of Hispanic females becoming pregnant at least once by the time they are 20 years old is an
extremely large percentage that causes the Hispanic populace to have the highest teenage pregnancy
rates in the country. Poverty is another root of teenage pregnancy among Hispanic youth. What has
been seen in history in the U.S. is the endless spiral that faces families that are in poverty. When one
young woman becomes pregnant her child if female has a 22% increased chance of becoming a
pregnant teenager herself. With this comes the possibility of

Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities
Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States
has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving
birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers
having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups
were comprised of Hispanics and Non–Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in
2011, according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the
third highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births
per 1000 came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low
population group with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are
most minority groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that
about 80 percent of all the teenagers between the age group of 15–17 had no formal sexual
education before their first sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be
affected by the lack of sexual education at their respected school. Interestingly enough, President
Obama has recently cut the budget for abstinence only sex education. However, this was done
because current research indicates that abstinence only programs do not prevent or delay teen sex.
Many teens say that their schools tend to use

The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy Essay
INTRODUCTION Throughout the United States, rates of teen pregnancy are significantly high. In
2013, there were 26.5 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15–19, or 273,105 babies born
to females in this age group.1 Young, minority women between the ages of 15 and 24 appear to be at
greater risk for becoming pregnant. Minority populations are also linked with low socioeconomic
status, whether in terms of education or income, or both. Having low income and lower levels of
education (the most commonly used measures of SES) were also associated with increased risk for
unintended pregnancies, with 62% of pregnancies being unintended among those earning 200% of
the FPL.2 In addition, with minority populations growing rapidly, many of these young women and
their families live in smaller, more rural areas. According to one study, in rural and small town areas
the Hispanic population increased by 1.9 million or 46 percent between 2000 and 2010.3 In rural
areas there is often limited access to nearby health care facilities. With income, education and living
inadequacies, these young women face complications with availability and ready access to
contraception, and are therefore less likely to practice effective utilization of contraceptives. There is
evidence that minority and low SES women are less likely to use contraception overall, use different
contraceptive methods, and have higher rates of contraceptive failure than white and higher SES
women.2 Cultural beliefs and

Women Should Not Have the Option of Artificial Fertilization
I don't believe that women should have the option of artificial fertilization because the
women can have emotionally harmful side effects. According to a study released by the Baird
commission in April about 2,900 women were enrolled in IVF programs n Canada in 1991
resulting in 189 births, while 3,400 used artificial insemination in fertility clinics, leading to 360
births. (Nichols 2) The fact that the success rate is that low is sad a woman could try and try to
get pregnant and go through so many treatments hoping at the same time that eventually they
could have a child but fail most of the time.
All 32 mature oocytes were injected. Seven zygotes showed normal fertilization (22%)
and one zygote showed pronuclear fertilization and 24 oocytes (75%) did not show any
sign of fertilization. Most of the embryos had poor morphology before the embryo
transfer, but there was at least one embryo available for transfer in each cycle....The forst
for IVF cycles did ot result in a pregnancy. In the fifth IVF circle two oocytes were
fertilized normally and one oocyte showed one pronuclear fertilization. (Francsovits, etat
2)
This piece of evidence is very demoralizing for a woman that is reaching out to their last option to
have a child of her own.
The second reason I thoroughly disagree to the option of artificial fertilization is because it
causes physically harmful problems for the woman going through this treatment. When blood and

The Pregnancy Of The Fetal Heart Rate
As technology progresses, it has become more important in our daily lives. Obstetricians and
hospital's rely on technology more than ever to flag potential problems during pregnancy, labor, and
delivery (1). Continuous recording of the fetal heart rate come into being in the 1970's and is likely a
big contributor to the increase in Caesarean sections(1). Continuous monitoring allows doctors to
make a decision on what birthing method should be used: natural birth or caesarean. The benefits of
natural birth outweigh the risks of a Caesarean section to mother and baby. Pregnancy occurs when
a sperm and egg unite, this is called conception. A zygote is created, in one week the zygote attaches
itself on the uterine wall, and in two weeks becomes an embryo. Week 10 of pregnancy the embryo
turns into a fetus. The fetus develops more and more for 28 weeks. Around 39–40 weeks, a woman
can go into labor. Labor is when the mother starts having contractions, and the baby's head starts
dropping into the cervix. The cervix dilates and thins out. As the cervix is fully dilated at 10
centimeters the mother beings pushing. Vaginal birth entails less discomfort after delivery (9).
Vaginal birth babies can go home with their babies sooner (9). Vaginal births take roughly one or
two weeks for recovery (1). During natural birth the baby gets a 'squeeze.' This forces mucus and
fluid out of the baby's airway. With the Caesarean, the baby does not get the beneficial squeeze like

High School Dropout Rates And Teen Pregnancy
High School dropout rates have been a problem since the word high school became a term. To
begin, a study researched by Education Week, Rumberger interprets "...The nation 's leading
education periodical estimates that 1.3 million students from the high school class of 2010 failed to
graduate" (Rumberger 61). Taking those findings you can go a step further and narrow the field to
one of the causes of dropout rates, which is teen pregnancy. By focusing on teen pregnancy your
able to narrow down the field of research and solve one problem at a time. According to Rumberger
"...68 percent of young women who had a child by age eighteen had completed high school by age
twenty – two compared to 94 percent of young women who did not experience a teen birth" (1294).
These numbers can translate into discovering solutions to fix the dropout rates of pregnant
teenagers. Discovering the needs of pregnant teenagers and teen mothers will lead to an
understanding evolving into solutions to prevent pregnant teens from dropping out of high school.
Allowing for the increase of female graduates. Fixing one problem of high school dropouts allows
for other possibilities in other areas. Therefore, by developing after school programs with
counseling, along with programs to prepare for the future and to provide child care services for
single mothers the numbers will increase of students finishing high school. Generally speaking,
pregnancy for teenage girls, ages fourteen through eighteen

Now, about 15 million girls under the age of 20 in the world have a child each year. Guesses (of a
number) are that 20–60% of these pregnancies in developing countries are mistimed or unwanted. In
the United States, the percent of teenage pregnancies that are unintended is guessed (number) at
78%. The rates of teen pregnancy are not equal across (communities of people). Rates of teen
pregnancy change/differ by a factor of almost 10 from as low as 12 pregnancies per year per 1,000
teens in the Netherlands to rates of more than 100 teens per year per 1,000 in the Russian
Federation. The rates of women having a child before age 20 are higher in the United States
compared to almost the same countries. For example, 22% of women report having a child before
age 20 in the United States, compared to 15% in Great Britain and 11% in Canada. These
differences are even greater when comparing (numbers of babies born per 1000 people per year)

some, but not all, of this difference disappears.

Teen Pregnancy And Birth Rates
The increase of pregnancy that ranged from 30 percent to 50 percent between 1971 and 1979 was
due to the large increase in premarital sexual activity for young white girls(Kohli, 1995). Studies
found an increase in contraceptive use among sexually active teens from 50 percent to 70 percent
users between 1971 through 1979 (Kohli, 1995). This increase in contraceptive use was not enough
to outweigh the increase in premarital sexual activity. This only increased the rate of pregnancies in
teenage girls. There has still been a decrease in actual teenage births as a result of an increasing
amount of pregnancies being terminated from abortions (Kohli, 1995).
According to Clemmit(2010), although there is still a lot of hype surrounding teen pregnancy and
birth rates, teens have been less sexually activity, they have been using contraceptive, and getting
fewer abortions more recently than they did in earlier decades. This shows that the current
generation is using prevention techniques that were previously not being adopted by teens. To
illustrate, teen births and pregnancies have been declining in the United States since the late 1950s.
Although that might sound like the problem has subsided, the teen birth rates remain much higher in
the U.S. than in many other industrialized societies, such as Canada and Western Europe. To
illustrate, in 2007, Germany 's rate was about one–quarter the U.S. rate, France 's was one–sixth and
the Netherlands ' one–ninth(Cemmit, 2010).

Are Pregnancy Rates in Decline?
There are even some famous entities that are teenage parents themselves or also have a child who is
a teenage parent. Such names that come to mind are Jamie Lynn Spears, Bristol Palin (daughter of
Sarah Palin), and even the late great William Shakespeare was a father at 18 (Dillon, 2008). This
just proves that it's not just the lower class of people who are subset to the consequences of being
human. The high and mighty rich who are supposed to set an example can make mistakes that
change their lives as well. But I do compliment the men and woman who do have children and drop
out the spotlight to give their children the correct and proper attention they need and not have the
media worrying about what goes on everyday in their lives.
Recent studies have shown that pregnancy rates have declined from 117 out of a 1000 to 64 out of
1000 teens over a teen year period (Nihira, 2012). Not only has it declined but it is becoming
brought out more to the public attention how many children are coming out they are pregnant. A
couple of reasons why it is declining attributes to the rise of parents giving a more clear "birds and

Pregnancy Rate Of Pregnancy During Adolescence
Every day we see young pregnant women in households and on the streets, sometimes in schools, in
shops and elsewhere. There are many factors that lead to increasingly early exercise of sexuality in
adolescents and thus to early pregnancies. Pregnancy during adolescence is a topic of great interest
in all sectors of society, and across the world. Adolescence is a period of life in which the individual
acquires the reproductive capacity, psychologically passes from childhood to adulthood. Journal of
Adolescent Health conducted research on pregnancy rates, outcomes of birth and abortion among
15–to 19 years old and 10– to 14–year olds in all countries (Gilda, 2015). The hypotheses of this
research is that pregnancy accords in teenage girls between the ages of 10 to 19 years old, 95% of
these births occur in low– and middle–income.
The research conducted by Journal of Adolescent Health, shows statistics of over 21 counties of
pregnancies, abortions, births, and the Pregnancies that end in abortion (%). This Tables show a
contrast with females 15–19 years old, and females 10–24 years old, Rate per 1,000 females. The
average birth rate among teens in middle–income countries exceeds more than double that of high–
income countries, and the share of low–income countries is five times higher. The proportion of
births that take place during adolescence stands at around 2% in China, 18% in Latin America and
the Caribbean and over 50% in sub–Saharan Africa. Half of all births in

Teen Pregnancy Rates Have Reached An All Time High
Did you know that today teen pregnancy rates have reached an all–time high in the United States?
According to a healthcare organization called, Family Planning Plus, about 750,000 American
teenage girls get pregnant annually, to date. In consequence, high schools around the country have
taken a decision to step up and take an action in decreasing the rate of teen pregnancy. Becoming a
parent permanently and profoundly alters a teenager 's life. Most of the girls forget about their
dreams of happy marriage, and become mothers at an early age. College is almost always out of the
question, graduating high School becomes a goal most teenage moms do not achieve. Today, there
are many types of birth control found in schools across the country; however most parents and
administrations are having trouble accepting the distribution of contraception in educational
facilities saying that it enables students to have intercourse and is also against religious beliefs.
From my point of view, schools should have contraceptive supplements available to young adults
and teenagers because it can lower the risk of teenage pregnancy and abortion, prevent sexually
transmitted diseases, and help teenagers be comfortable making responsible decisions. According to
the article entitled, "Untangling the Health Disparities of Teen Pregnancy," young girls having
babies is not new, as a matter of fact, teenage parenthood was higher in the 1950 then it is today, but
things were different. Most of the

Internet Research Assignment : High Teen Pregnancy Rate
Internet Research Assignment
The first article came from the Dallas Observer and is titled, "Here's How to Fix Texas' Sky–High
Teen Pregnancy Rate" (http://www.dallasobserver.com/news/heres–how–to–fix–texas–sky–high–
teen–pregnancy–rate–7626551). The author of the article, Eric Nicholson, is extremely critical of
Texas' sexual education program and voices his criticism with heavy use of sarcasm. This September
28, 2015 article was prompted by Texas' recent decision to provide low–income teenagers with
access to free birth control. The author praises the decision and is hopeful it will help reduce Texas'
high birthrate which "puts Texas in the company of such bastions of progressive public–health
policy as Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma." Mr. Nicholson also notes that five Dallas ZIP codes
recently received a loan from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help combat
teen pregnancy. While he is optimistic that these changes will reduce the teen pregnancy rate, he
also points out that "expanding access to contraception and improving education ... are hardly
groundbreaking techniques in the fight against unintended pregnancy." For Mr. Nicholson, these are
nothing but first steps which should have been taken long ago. He then proceeds to discuss five
ways in which Texas can do even more to combat the high teen pregnancy rates in Texas. He first
suggests that rather than deferring to parents on matters of sex and HIV education which inevitably
means many

Teen Pregnancy Rates By Jacqueline Sedgwick 's Article,...
One major problem in America's society today is teen pregnancy rates. In fact, "teen sexual activity,
pregnancy, and childbearing are associated with substantial social, economic, and health costs"
(Sedgwick). However, this problem is not one without a solution. The rise of teen pregnancy rates
can be prevented and reversed by providing better access to birth control for teens, eliminating the
negative connotation that accompanies abstinence, and implementing more efficient sex education
in public schools. One solution to preventing teen pregnancy would be to provide better access to
birth control for teenagers. In Jacqueline Sedgwick's article, "American Adolescents and Emergency
Contraceptive Pill Access," she argues that the American teenage pregnancy and abortion rates are
higher than any other nation due to the irregular or improper usage of birth control. Many American
teenagers are unaware of how to properly use the contraceptives and mistakenly find themselves in
difficult situations, but with more knowledge about birth control, teens will be able to properly
protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. According to the
article, the federal court order the US Food and Drug Administration to make emergency
contraceptive pills available to teens over the age of seventeen without a prescription (Sedgwick).
Allowing easy access to birth control will enable teens to be prepared and inhibit them from
unintended pregnancies that are likely

This week's assignment had me take a closer look on how environment truly influences teen
pregnancy rates in my community. Teens living in poverty have a greater likelihood of becoming
pregnant than teens living in affluent communities. What causes this disparity? Social and
environmental factors are in large part responsible for the disparity. The adults in lower– income
families are often less educated, have a criminal history, hold low–income jobs, or are unemployed.
Lower income communities are plagued by gun violence, gang inhabitance, and the availability of
drugs. Teens that become pregnant at an early age, have parents that themselves were pregnant as

According to the CDC, Teen pregnancy rates are highest within the Hispanic and African American
demographic ("Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy / Reproductive Health /
CDC," 2015). This trend can be linked to neighborhood income inequality and lower educational
opportunity for these demographics ("Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy /
Reproductive Health / CDC," 2015). In my Voicethread post I addressed the idea of generational
poverty for many families in urban communities across the country. Adolescents and teens that have
grandparents and parents that live in poverty are more likely to experience poverty in their adult
lives. Low–income families rely on multiple forms of government aid, including food stamps, rent
assistance, and other governmental subsidies to decrease their financial burden each month. Cyclic
poverty is among the most difficult patterns to overcome. Decreased economic prospects for young
girls in urban environments steer them towards teen parenting (Kempner, 2013). Watching their
parents 'get by' is enough motivation for vulnerable young women to take the plunge into
parenthood. However, parents that seek education and personal betterment often seek safer
environments in which to raise their children, breaking the cycle of poverty for their families. The
educational push by the adults in their lives should be there for teens,

increasing. Since 2007 we have steadily be rising by 1% every year (Center for Disease Control). In
addition we are ranked as the number one nation in the world for having the most teenagers
becoming parents. Are teenagers being prepared and educated adequately in the dangers of sexually
transmitted diseases and the risks of pregnancies? In my experience no, just last year I had a
freshman student who gave birth in October. This incident was shocking and alarming. Also to be

Teenage Pregnancy : The Causes Of Teenage Birth Rates
Teenage Mother Three out of ten adolescent young ladies will end up getting pregnant before the
age of twenty. That is rounded to about seven hundred and fifty thousand high school pregnancies
consistently occurring. Over half of the teenage mothers to be, never finish secondary school.
Planned Parenthood determined that eighty two percent of teenage pregnancies are not thought out
nor planned for. Contrasted with the adolescent birth rates in other created nations, America's are the
most elevated: twice as high as Australia's and Canada's, three times as high as France's, three and a
half circumstances as high as Germany's, six times as high as the Netherlands', and seven times as
high as Japan's.
Teenage mothers have less of a chance to marry the father of their offspring. The national
conference of state legislature tells us that roughly about twenty percent of teenage mothers marry
the father of their child. About twenty five percent of teenage mothers have another child after about
twenty–four months of having their first child. That would make it extremely hard to attend college
or even finish high school. No more than two percent earn a college degree before the age of thirty!
Not many mothers have the love and support that is very much needed to help raise a baby at such a
young age. Young mothers need help, they're young themselves they don't know the responsibility

Teenage Pregnancy : The Highest Rate Of Teen Pregnancy
Teen Pregnancy
The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy of most industrialized nations. According to
a 2014 article, in 2013 nearly 273,105 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a live birth
rate of 26.5 per 1,000 women in this age group. This is a record low for U.S. teens in this age group,
and a drop of 10% from 2012. Birth rates fell 13% for women aged 15–17 years, and 8% for women
aged 18–19 years. Still, the U.S. teen pregnancy rate is substantially higher than in other western
industrialized nations. "About Teen Pregnancy." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

can cause health problems for the baby. According to the American Medical Association (AMA),
babies born to women who do not have regular prenatal care are 4 times more likely to die before
the age of 1 year. In addition to increased health risks, children born to teenage mothers are more

being taboo, people try to avoid the subject because they aren't always informed correctly about it

Parents want to teach their offspring about sex at home, because they feel like they can provide what
they feel is age appropriate material to their offspring. However, if we rely on parents to teach their
children about sex, how do we prove that their information is age appropriate or credible? Personal
beliefs might be added into the information and can exclude certain subjects like what to do if you
are having consensual sex before marriage. Certain beliefs people follow, such as Catholics, don't
teach the subject of contraception to girls ("Madison"). If we teach sex and its related topics that
have been proven as medically accurate at a suitable time for adolescents, they can grow to think of
it not as a controversial subject and can freely speak of the correct information they learned.
Teenagers who don't get medically accurate information can become liable for their actions which
they were not properly taught the consequences of earlier. When you don't teach a female accurate
information about sex, they are risking the chance of getting pregnant because of the material that
she was taught. This is also true for boys when they don't know the consequences of having sex.

The Problem Of Teen Pregnancy Rates
Introduction to Nature and Scope of Research
In reviewing the literature of multiple studies and reports, I found that there is significantly more
data and research in regards to the problem of teen pregnancy and the associated problems that are
attributed to adolescent childbearing than there are specific to the effectiveness and efficacy of
second chance homes. Second chance homes help teen mothers and their children comply with
welfare reform requirements under the 1996 law (Housing and Urban Development, 2016). Second
chance homes can also support teen families who are homeless or currently residing in foster care
(Housing and Urban Development, 2016). In addition, research has shown that over 60% of teen
parents have experienced sexual and physical abuse by household member requiring the need for
alternative housing options (Housing and Urban Development, 2016). Assessment of Effectiveness
of Current Policy and Limitations of existing Research
I would find it hard to say that the second chance home policy is effective simply based on the
currently decreasing teen pregnancy rates. Since PRWORA was enacted in 1996, there have been
several major policy changes that could also be affecting the decrease in teen pregnancy. Two
examples would be the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to extend the constitutional right to privacy to a
minor 's decision to obtain contraceptives and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of
2010 which gave all insured minors access to free

nonexistent. But each year twelve million unfortunate adolescent contract in STD and more than one
million teenage girls become pregnant (IDPH). Therefore, the government pushes abstinence–only
programs on adolescent in hopes that this would be the solution to this difficult problem.
Unfortunately, these programs do very little to stop the increasing rates, but now have only pushed
teens to continue in their sexual behaviors, along with denying them the tools to properly protect
themselves. Even though research has disproven that abstinence–only programs work,
comprehensive programs are still not being used in school. This is because there is an ... Show more

Even though these two STDs are treatable with antibiotics, for the majority of people who contract
these infections do not experience any symptoms and it can go without treatment for many years. If
left untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea can leave the person with devastating consequences like
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infertility, and other health problems. HIV is another epidemic among
adolescents, so much so that young people ages 13 to 24 make up the 1 out of every 4 new HIV
infections each year (CDC). Young adults diagnosed with this infectious disease are forced to carry
it with them the rest of their lives because as of now it is incurable. HIV is a serious disease that if
not treated properly can cause the person to become extremely ill and can even cause death. Herpes
is not far behind HIV, with one in every five adolescent and adults become infected and two–thirds
of that number are young adults under the age of 25 (Teen Help). This STD is also incurable and
secretly lives in the body, leaving the person to only guess when an outbreak will happen. Because
"many adolescents underestimate their infection risk and they have mistaken ideas about what
protect them from STDs and what does not," (Brückner 277) many do not take the proper
precautions necessary to protect themselves. This leaves "[o]ne third of all sexually active young

Verses if there were not access to these helpful resources or maybe not as easily accessible, people
would not think twice abut having unprotected sex because they would know that they don 't have

The norms, values and beliefs of families also play a large role in the current social issue. Some
families who were teen mothers themselves might be more or less educating to their child based on

Teenage Pregnancy Rates And The United States
Even though teenage pregnancy rates have decreased in the U.S. in recent years, the rates are far
behind European countries. Studies have shown that U.S. teenagers have (a) high rates of sexual
intercourse at a younger age, (b) high rates of sex without contraceptives, (c) high rates of
pregnancy, (d) and high number of multiple sex partners in comparison to European countries like
Sweden, France, Netherland (Bell, 2009).
One of the main reasons for high rates of teenage pregnancy in the U.S. is the continuation of
ineffective abstinence based education (Bell, 2009) and not allowing teenagers to make abortion
related decisions. In the U.S. Eighty two percent of the teenage pregnancy is unintended and 37 %
of total unintended pregnancies result in abortion. Teenagers choose to abort babies because of
shame, staying focused on career, unstable financial status to support babies and not getting
emotional and economic support from parents. Twenty two percent of pregnant teenagers choose not
to tell their parents (ACLU, 2001).
Teen Pregnancy Prevention Intervention (TPPI) was initiated with the objective of reaching
teenagers to create awareness and help them make safe sex choices and prevent pregnancy through
comprehensive sex education. However, the policy of after school program has hindered in
providing effectiveness of sex education because most of the minority students are not able to
participate since they have to go to work and help their parents to support their family.

America is known for being a superpower, and this is absolutely true when it comes to leading the

Pregnancy is a similar story. Nearly 615,000 teenage women become pregnant on a yearly basis
(purple). That is 6% of the teenage population– a record low in 2010. This number was down 51%
from 1990's statistics (purple). This drastic decrease has been a result of more teenagers using

Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. The states with the lowest teen pregnancy rates were New

Whichever is the reason they both come with damaging consequences. Emotional damage can lead
to far more serious problems. For instance, once a teen loses their virginity to someone they love
and they break up it can cause them to feel that their life is over. There have been reports of teens
that have attempted or successfully committed suicide. Sexually active teens are more than twice as
likely as virgin teens to be depressed or attempt suicide (Fisanick 48). If a pregnant teen commits
suicide, she is not only harming herself, but her baby as well. As a product of the teen committing
suicide her life is lost and an innocent baby will never see the world.
Setting back the rate of teens having sex can also prevent the spread of STDs among adolescents.
Teens involved in sexual restraint are most likely aware of the various diseases. Others that are not
tend to be the victims of these countless STDs. The side benefit of abstinence is that there is no
chance of contracting STDs (Mucciolo 24). The spread of STDs among teens can put them in danger
and lead them to death. As of today 4 in 10 sexually active teen girls have had an STD that can
cause infertility and even death (Office of Adolescent Health). Catching an STD can also cause
emotional damage which as I stated before could result in suicide.

Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy

  • 1. Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), "The United States ranks first among developed nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases" (Stanger–Hall, Kathrin F., and David W. Hall, paragraph 1). In 2015, there were a total of 229,715 babies born to teen moms between the ages of 15–19 (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 1). It is not just becoming a problem; it has been a problem for a while. It does not help the problem when there are "reality" television shows making it look glamorous to be a young mom. Shows like "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" makes it seem like no matter what goes wrong, everything always ends happily ever after. Unfortunately, for most people (teen moms included) life is not a fairy tale, not everyone gets a happily ever after. There are many reasons why we need to decrease teen pregnancy rates. The first of which is the economic costs. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) "In 2010, teen pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers" (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 9). Having a screaming child around does not make it easy study. Teenage parents have a significantly lower graduation rates verses teenager who do not have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Teenage Pregnancy And Low Birth Weight Rates Teenage pregnancies have been a critical issue that affects young women all over the world. In some cultures it is normal for teenagers to have children, whereas in America it is looked down on. In "Teenage Pregnancy in the United States" by James Trussell, a professor at Princeton University, he states "one out of every 10 women aged 15–19 in the United States becomes pregnant each year... there will be about 837,000 pregnancies among women aged 15–19, and another 23,000 among those aged 14 and younger" (Trussell 262). There are many reasons why teenage pregnancies may occur, but there are many consequences that come with young mothers bearing children. Many scholars discuss low birth weight rates as a problem related to teenage mothers, which leads to the research question if the percentage of teenage pregnancies increased in 2014 in the United States then the low birth weight rates increased as well. Some of the scholars that focus on the idea that teenage pregnancy has an influence on low birth weight rates are Jeffrey Roth, a research assistant professor at the University of Florida, Jo Hendrickson, a professor at the University of Iowa, Max Schilling, the Program Director at Florida Network on Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting, and Prevention and Daniel W. Stowell, the Associate Publications Editor at the University of Illinois. • 5. Factors That Affect The Rate Of The Pregnancy OT plays a major role in the initiation of labor particularly during the expulsive phase by stimulating prostaglandin release in species, specifically in the uterine epithelium. Blanks and Thornton (2003) study revealed that secretion of oxytocin is at its maximum level during fetal delivery of pups but the amount of OT released during expulsion of the pups varies among species. According to them, oxytocin is at its peak at the time of delivery of the first fetus in rabbit, and throughout labor with greater pulses overlapping with pup's expulsion in rats. Variations in oxytocin level are also seen during the pregnancy and labor in humans. According to Blanks and Thornton (2003) several discrepancies are present when in OT is measured in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This suggests that OT is critical for the ejection of milk but not parturition. Additionally, after injecting OT on OT null mice and wild type mice, the start of premature labor within 24hrs was observed at high concentrations of OT in both wild and null mice (Blanks & Thornton, 2003). With that in mind, abnormal modification of OT action does influence the start of labor. In conclusion, they put forward the idea that OT receptor in mice is mostly invested in the timing for the initiation of labor. Most importantly, the OT receptor is essential for normal labor because those receptors are found in abundance in uterine epithelium during late pregnancy promoting contractile effects. Along with those findings, female rats that are undergone a knockout of OT, showed a decreased in maternal care of their pups but displayed a higher level of aggression (Bales & Perkeybile, 2012). Social rearing conditions plays a role in the binding of OT. Prairie voles, when differently handled by experimenters a week after being born resulted in more OTR binding (Bales et al 2011). When changing the animal's cages, experimenters carried the parent prairies vole by the scruff of the neck and others were not touched. Those females that had careful attention and handling by the experimenters displayed an increase in OTR binding. The same results were reported in males. They concluded that the type of maintenance that pups received in early days after being born does affect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Teen Pregnancy Rates On Canada Abstract: This report takes an in–depth look at the teen pregnancy rates in Canada. Comparing the trends in Canadian provinces mainly focused on the trends in Ontario. Teen pregnancy rates have drastically falling from a report completed in the 1970's where the pregnancy rate amongst teen girls between the ages of 15–19 years old. In the 1970's, teen pregnancy was amongst the highest rates Canada has ever seen. This report also focuses on the reasons teen pregnancy is prevalent in the following provinces and the effects after the birth of the child, what factors play a role in these mothers giving birth which include; family circumstances and the position poverty plays. Comprehensive research has been done over the last few years following ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Could it be that Canada is a desired place to raise children from the amount of assistance the Government gives? Findings include; where education is low, poverty is as well. Socio economics without question play a role in teen pregnancy rates. Thesis In certain provinces, teen pregnancy rates appear to be declining, however in other provinces rates appear to be rising. In provinces like Winnipeg, Calgary and Ontario rates have been the highest Canada has seen within the last 40 years. Evidence has suggested that socio–economics played a major role in the fluctuation of teen pregnancy rates. Teen girls who lacked in education were more likely to become pregnant and also live below the poverty lines. Canada's decrease in teen pregnancy rates were a result of contraceptives becoming more available in public places such as schools, and within their personal lives. However in communities north of the GTA, there are higher rates of pregnancy. Aboriginal do not have the same accessibility as others do, which is why teen pregnancy rates are above the national average. Other reasons contributing to the rise of pregnancy with first nation teen girls are the socio–economics as well as factors leading to oppression within that community. • 9. Rate Of Teen Pregnancies In The United States One crucial question is what is the rate of teen pregnancies in the United States? According to the article "Teen Pregnancy Facts", "About 750,000 teens become pregnant each year." That adds up to roughly 0.24% of the United States' overall population. Though, not a substantial amount, it still generates an abundance of issues; not only for the mother and child, but also for the country as teen moms are many times in need of government assistance and/or welfare. An increased rate of teenage mothers causes an increased need for government assistance and/or welfare, which in turn, creates more government debt. One article previously used, "Teen Pregnancy facts", emphasizes that "More than 75% of teen mothers need welfare within 5 years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An umpteen amount of parents, schools, and even trusted adults believe teaching abstinence–only will prevent teen pregnancy, but in all reality, that method does not sufficiently keep teenagers from having sex–– safe sex, for that matter. That is where the controversial argument on contraceptives begins. A great amount of teenagers has sex; it's inevitable. "American Teens' Sexual and Reproductive Health" states that 71% of teenagers has sex before their nineteenth birthday. Proving that not only a great amount of teenagers has sex, but a majority of them do. The most obvious and prevailing problem is the prevention of unprotected sex and unplanned teen pregnancy. Though, some states do permit teenagers to have access to contraceptives without parental consent, other states do not, thus, bringing up the question as to why some teen girls have those rights, but others do not. At the time, twenty–one states in the U.S. permit all minors to contraceptive services, however, twenty–five states "explicitly permit minors to consent to contraceptive services in one or more circumstances" ("State Policies In Brief"). • 11. The Decline Of Teen Pregnancy Rates Nancy Glynn 10, December 2015 Final Research Paper English 110–07 The Decline In Teen Pregnancy Rates Over the last few decades the rates in teen pregnancy have been a debate; did they rise over the past few years or did they actually decline? Contrary to some doctors and politicians the numbers associated with teen pregnancy have decline over the last couple of years. Although there are still people out there who believe this to be an issue it's made more of an issue than it actually is. The ads and commercials are set out to scare teen–agers into believing that were at an all time high for this issue, but realistically its actually the exact opposite. Teen pregnancy rates haven't dropped on there over the course of the years. There are a few major factors that have contributed a great deal to this change. Those changes include but are not limited to: more resources being available to these teenagers to prevent themselves from becoming pregnant, society is more open to talking about this issue as well as the religion and culture change aspect of families today. Despite the beliefs of others, teen pregnancy rates are at an all time low for the first time in decades. In fact there are a few things that impacted the decline in teen pregnancy, one of which was the society has opened up to this topic of conversation. It's not something that's kept behind closed door like it use to be. Talking about sexual education in local school systems was a big impact on declining ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Teenage Pregnancy Rates Among Ethnicities Teen Pregnancy Rates Among Ethnicities Dr. Maria Reid Florida International University Friday, June 17, 2016 Vanessa Romano Stephanie Maquieira Teenage pregnancy has been viewed as an issue for many years, not only for teenage mothers but for babies as well. Much importance has been placed on this subject for the reason that although these rates are declining, they remain elevated. The United States represents over 600,000 American teen pregnancies every year, making this the highest rate in the industrialized world (Steinberg, 2017). Unfortunately, ethnic minorities in the United States have a predisposition to the many social, educational and economic disadvantages that in fact shape adolescent sexual behavior and lead to the decision of adolescent motherhood. This paper will illustrate teenage pregnancy rates over the last few years, the factors that impact teen pregnancy, contraception and the likelihood of teen pregnancies across different ethnic groups. Over the years, the rate of adolescent pregnancy in the United States has been declining by nearly 40% since the 1990's. (Brown, 2016) Adolescent pregnancy rates have decreased across the nation for adolescents belonging to any racial and ethnic group. (Brown, 2016) It seems that adolescents are making smarter decisions considering that there is 77% decline in pregnancy risk. Adolescent pregnancy risk is positively correlated with greater use of condoms by 58% and birth control methods by 39%. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Cause And Effect Of The Pregnancy Rate During The First... According to The March of Dimes (2016) miscarriage, particularly in the first trimester, has an overall estimated incidence of 10 to 15%. However, the number could be as high as 50% when taking into account pregnancies which had not yet been discovered (March of Dimes, 2016). Concern regarding miscarriage is universal yet in women taking an antidepressant this concern increases as researchers have theorized that its use may increase the potential for spontaneous abortion. Two large scale studies by Andersen et al., (2014) and Kjaersgaard et al., (2013) documented increased miscarriage rates although a direct correlation between SSRI use and spontaneous abortion was not identified. These two prospective studies combined evaluated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So while increased miscarriage rates have been documented in the research, the authors' conclusions directed implication away from SSRI use and focused rather on other possible causative factors. PREGNANCY, SSRI USE AND NEONATAL OUTCOMES 8 SSRIs do not seem to be implicated in spontaneous abortion and their role in stillbirth and postneonatal mortality follows similar lines. The increase in both stillbirth and postneonatal mortality found in the studies by Andersen et al., (2014), Jimenez–Solem et al., ( 2013) & Stephansson et al., (2013) are likely attributed to severity of disease and comorbidity factors such as increased tobacco and alcohol use, elevated BMI, and or higher maternal age. None of these studies concluded that SSRI use was a causative factor, but rather focused on depression and the common health risks which often accompany the diagnosis. Overall, review of the current literature finds no direct causal relationship between SSRI use and miscarriage, stillbirth or postneonatal mortality (Andersen et al., Jimenez–Solem et al., 2013, Kjaersgaard et al., 2013 & Stephansson et al., 2013). This does not eliminate an indirect causal relationship from malformations such as persistent pulmonary hypertension, anencephaly, craniosynostosis, or omphalocele. • 17. Abstinence-Only Education And Teen Pregnancy Rates Sex education, arguably one of the most controversial topics to surface in American politics over the past half century, poses a complicated problem to citizens and lawmakers alike. Following the AIDS epidemic and spike in teen pregnancy in the 1980s, lawmakers and educators began drafting and implementing more sex education classes and courses in public schools in an attempt to remedy the ever–growing issue. While few object to the idea in itself, the method and content of its teaching is highly controversial. Should we teach abstinence or safe sex? How early should children be exposed to this material? How effective are these classes? These are just a few questions surrounding the issue, which are often disputed. For this particular assignment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Coupling the three pieces with my prior knowledge of the subject as well as personal experience, I can confidently say that I am indeed 'pro sexual education'. More specifically, I prefer programs in which safe sex is taught thoroughly, but teens are highly encouraged to sublimate their sexual desires until adulthood. However, I might add, this was my original stance; nothing presented in any of the works against sexual education as a whole were persuasive enough to change my view on the subject. • 19. The Rate Of Unwanted Teenage Pregnancies And Sexually... The rates of unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are drastically increasing. Sexual Education has become an effective way of enforcing safety precautions and informing teens about healthy sexual activity. Sexual Education is the act of educating others about intercourse, the anatomy of the human body, sexual reproduction, abstinence, and contraceptives. Elizabeth Boskey, a STD expert, believes that schools should teach sex education because of the positive effects it has on the students. However, Sol Gordon believes that the parents should be responsible for teaching their children about sex. Even though Elizabeth Boskey and Sol Gordon take different stances on how sex education should be taught, they both agree that children should be educated about sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, and safe sex. In Elizabeth Boskey's article, "Top 10 Reasons to Support Comprehensive Education in Schools" she supports sexual education being taught in school. Boskey believes that schools cover the whole spectrum about safe sex and that schools effectively teach the students. She proves that not only do the schools teach abstinence, but the schools also teach their students how to engage in safe sex. Teaching the kids about abstinence doesn't discourage the kids from engaging in sexual intercourse but teaching the kids about safe sex will allow them to engage in sex safely without endangering each other (Boskey Par. 2). This is another record low for U.S. teens and a drop of 8% from 2014. Birth rates fell 9% for women aged 15–17 years and 7% for women aged 18–19 years." Teenage pregnancy is characterized as an adolescent girl, for the most part between the ages of thirteen and nineteen, conceiving a child. The term in everyday context for the most part alludes to girls who have not achieved the legal age of adulthood, which fluctuates across the world, who end up pregnant. Teenage pregnancy is something that affects more than one million teenagers in the United States. For a few these pregnancies are planned, yet eighty–five percent of these pregnancies are unplanned. Although there are many pregnancies still occuring, teenage pregnancy rates are decreasing each year, the relationship between child and parent is much stronger in teen parent relationships, and there are several stereotypes against teen mothers. Although there are a vast amount of teen pregnancies, the rates of teenage pregnancy are steadily decreasing each year. The birth rate has dropped by nine percent since the year of 2015 and it has dropped sixty–seven percent since 1991 (Scutti). Teenage pregnancy rates are steadily decreasing due to there being more, "access to contraceptives and use of contraceptives" (Berlan). Another reason for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Teen Pregnancy And The Teenage Pregnancy Rates Pregnancy and parenthood is a significantly life– altering event that anyone could experience. These two life events inquire not only physical but mental obstacles. What happens when these events occur when your body is not physically developed and your mental maturity is not fully ripened? This happens too often amongst the teen age population. In the United States, teen pregnancies are the highest when compared to other developed countries. Teen births account for 10% of all births in the United States. (NCHS) While the only way to solve this issue is to educate teens on prevention, Hispanics continue to have the highest teen pregnancy rates because lack of financial resources, lack of formal sexual education, and cultural beliefs. With Hispanic teenagers accounting for over a quarter of teenage pregnancy there are many factors affecting the Hispanic communities and families that cause these numbers to be so high. And at 53% of Hispanic females becoming pregnant at least once by the time they are 20 years old is an extremely large percentage that causes the Hispanic populace to have the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country. Poverty is another root of teenage pregnancy among Hispanic youth. What has been seen in history in the U.S. is the endless spiral that faces families that are in poverty. When one young woman becomes pregnant her child if female has a 22% increased chance of becoming a pregnant teenager herself. With this comes the possibility of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups were comprised of Hispanics and Non–Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in 2011, according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the third highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births per 1000 came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low population group with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are most minority groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that about 80 percent of all the teenagers between the age group of 15–17 had no formal sexual education before their first sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be affected by the lack of sexual education at their respected school. Interestingly enough, President Obama has recently cut the budget for abstinence only sex education. However, this was done because current research indicates that abstinence only programs do not prevent or delay teen sex. Many teens say that their schools tend to use ... • 27. The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy Essay INTRODUCTION Throughout the United States, rates of teen pregnancy are significantly high. In 2013, there were 26.5 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15–19, or 273,105 babies born to females in this age group.1 Young, minority women between the ages of 15 and 24 appear to be at greater risk for becoming pregnant. Minority populations are also linked with low socioeconomic status, whether in terms of education or income, or both. Having low income and lower levels of education (the most commonly used measures of SES) were also associated with increased risk for unintended pregnancies, with 62% of pregnancies being unintended among those earning 200% of the FPL.2 In addition, with minority populations growing rapidly, many of these young women and their families live in smaller, more rural areas. According to one study, in rural and small town areas the Hispanic population increased by 1.9 million or 46 percent between 2000 and 2010.3 In rural areas there is often limited access to nearby health care facilities. With income, education and living inadequacies, these young women face complications with availability and ready access to contraception, and are therefore less likely to practice effective utilization of contraceptives. There is evidence that minority and low SES women are less likely to use contraception overall, use different contraceptive methods, and have higher rates of contraceptive failure than white and higher SES women.2 Cultural beliefs and ... After that night her life changed drastically . After 4 weeks she figured out she was pregnant. Isabel conversed with a trusted auntie, and she took her to go get checked. She peed in a container and those 2 lines came up. Isabel took a gander at her Aunt ,but she didn 't generally recognize what to say. She told Isabel that it would have been alright. I am regularly frightened when I see an amazingly youthful young lady encountering parenthood during a period when her fundamental concerns ought to be far not exactly those of raising another person. The truth of the matter is that consistently more teenage girls are having babies at an alarmingly, youthful age. This issue brings up the issue of what should be possible to forestall and bring down the rates of teenage pregnancy. Keeping in mind the end goal is to avert teenage pregnancy. Youngsters need a complete comprehension of restraint, preventative strategies, and outcomes .Young people who are pregnant can 't typically bolster the youngster all alone. • 31. Women Should Not Have the Option of Artificial Fertilization I don't believe that women should have the option of artificial fertilization because the women can have emotionally harmful side effects. According to a study released by the Baird commission in April about 2,900 women were enrolled in IVF programs n Canada in 1991 resulting in 189 births, while 3,400 used artificial insemination in fertility clinics, leading to 360 births. (Nichols 2) The fact that the success rate is that low is sad a woman could try and try to get pregnant and go through so many treatments hoping at the same time that eventually they could have a child but fail most of the time. All 32 mature oocytes were injected. Seven zygotes showed normal fertilization (22%) and one zygote showed pronuclear fertilization and 24 oocytes (75%) did not show any sign of fertilization. Most of the embryos had poor morphology before the embryo transfer, but there was at least one embryo available for transfer in each cycle....The forst for IVF cycles did ot result in a pregnancy. In the fifth IVF circle two oocytes were fertilized normally and one oocyte showed one pronuclear fertilization. (Francsovits, etat 2) This piece of evidence is very demoralizing for a woman that is reaching out to their last option to have a child of her own. The second reason I thoroughly disagree to the option of artificial fertilization is because it causes physically harmful problems for the woman going through this treatment. When blood and

  • 34. The Pregnancy Of The Fetal Heart Rate As technology progresses, it has become more important in our daily lives. Obstetricians and hospital's rely on technology more than ever to flag potential problems during pregnancy, labor, and delivery (1). Continuous recording of the fetal heart rate come into being in the 1970's and is likely a big contributor to the increase in Caesarean sections(1). Continuous monitoring allows doctors to make a decision on what birthing method should be used: natural birth or caesarean. The benefits of natural birth outweigh the risks of a Caesarean section to mother and baby. Pregnancy occurs when a sperm and egg unite, this is called conception. A zygote is created, in one week the zygote attaches itself on the uterine wall, and in two weeks becomes an embryo. Week 10 of pregnancy the embryo turns into a fetus. The fetus develops more and more for 28 weeks. Around 39–40 weeks, a woman can go into labor. Labor is when the mother starts having contractions, and the baby's head starts dropping into the cervix. The cervix dilates and thins out. As the cervix is fully dilated at 10 centimeters the mother beings pushing. Vaginal birth entails less discomfort after delivery (9). Vaginal birth babies can go home with their babies sooner (9). Vaginal births take roughly one or two weeks for recovery (1). During natural birth the baby gets a 'squeeze.' This forces mucus and fluid out of the baby's airway. With the Caesarean, the baby does not get the beneficial squeeze like vaginal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. High School Dropout Rates And Teen Pregnancy High School dropout rates have been a problem since the word high school became a term. To begin, a study researched by Education Week, Rumberger interprets "...The nation 's leading education periodical estimates that 1.3 million students from the high school class of 2010 failed to graduate" (Rumberger 61). Taking those findings you can go a step further and narrow the field to one of the causes of dropout rates, which is teen pregnancy. By focusing on teen pregnancy your able to narrow down the field of research and solve one problem at a time. According to Rumberger "...68 percent of young women who had a child by age eighteen had completed high school by age twenty – two compared to 94 percent of young women who did not experience a teen birth" (1294). These numbers can translate into discovering solutions to fix the dropout rates of pregnant teenagers. Discovering the needs of pregnant teenagers and teen mothers will lead to an understanding evolving into solutions to prevent pregnant teens from dropping out of high school. Allowing for the increase of female graduates. Fixing one problem of high school dropouts allows for other possibilities in other areas. Therefore, by developing after school programs with counseling, along with programs to prepare for the future and to provide child care services for single mothers the numbers will increase of students finishing high school. • 38. The Rate Of Teen Pregnancy Now, about 15 million girls under the age of 20 in the world have a child each year. Guesses (of a number) are that 20–60% of these pregnancies in developing countries are mistimed or unwanted. In the United States, the percent of teenage pregnancies that are unintended is guessed (number) at 78%. The rates of teen pregnancy are not equal across (communities of people). Rates of teen pregnancy change/differ by a factor of almost 10 from as low as 12 pregnancies per year per 1,000 teens in the Netherlands to rates of more than 100 teens per year per 1,000 in the Russian Federation. The rates of women having a child before age 20 are higher in the United States compared to almost the same countries. For example, 22% of women report having a child before age 20 in the United States, compared to 15% in Great Britain and 11% in Canada. These differences are even greater when comparing (numbers of babies born per 1000 people per year) among younger teenagers. When one controls for poorness and (family and cultural characteristics), some, but not all, of this difference disappears. In the early 1990s, over 1 million teenagers (old/allowed to get old/got older) 15–19 became pregnant each year in the United States. This figure represents a peak of increasing rates of teen pregnancy through the 1980s and early 1990s. • 40. Teen Pregnancy And Birth Rates The increase of pregnancy that ranged from 30 percent to 50 percent between 1971 and 1979 was due to the large increase in premarital sexual activity for young white girls(Kohli, 1995). Studies found an increase in contraceptive use among sexually active teens from 50 percent to 70 percent users between 1971 through 1979 (Kohli, 1995). This increase in contraceptive use was not enough to outweigh the increase in premarital sexual activity. This only increased the rate of pregnancies in teenage girls. There has still been a decrease in actual teenage births as a result of an increasing amount of pregnancies being terminated from abortions (Kohli, 1995). According to Clemmit(2010), although there is still a lot of hype surrounding teen pregnancy and birth rates, teens have been less sexually activity, they have been using contraceptive, and getting fewer abortions more recently than they did in earlier decades. This shows that the current generation is using prevention techniques that were previously not being adopted by teens. To illustrate, teen births and pregnancies have been declining in the United States since the late 1950s. Although that might sound like the problem has subsided, the teen birth rates remain much higher in the U.S. than in many other industrialized societies, such as Canada and Western Europe. To illustrate, in 2007, Germany 's rate was about one–quarter the U.S. rate, France 's was one–sixth and the Netherlands ' one–ninth(Cemmit, 2010). The issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Such names that come to mind are Jamie Lynn Spears, Bristol Palin (daughter of Sarah Palin), and even the late great William Shakespeare was a father at 18 (Dillon, 2008). This just proves that it's not just the lower class of people who are subset to the consequences of being human. The high and mighty rich who are supposed to set an example can make mistakes that change their lives as well. But I do compliment the men and woman who do have children and drop out the spotlight to give their children the correct and proper attention they need and not have the media worrying about what goes on everyday in their lives. Recent studies have shown that pregnancy rates have declined from 117 out of a 1000 to 64 out of 1000 teens over a teen year period (Nihira, 2012). Not only has it declined but it is becoming brought out more to the public attention how many children are coming out they are pregnant. A couple of reasons why it is declining attributes to the rise of parents giving a more clear "birds and bees" talk. All parents have to go through the talk with their children and depending on if they explain the consequences of growing up to soon most will never know until it occurs (Czarnecki, 2008). • 44. Pregnancy Rate Of Pregnancy During Adolescence Every day we see young pregnant women in households and on the streets, sometimes in schools, in shops and elsewhere. There are many factors that lead to increasingly early exercise of sexuality in adolescents and thus to early pregnancies. Pregnancy during adolescence is a topic of great interest in all sectors of society, and across the world. Adolescence is a period of life in which the individual acquires the reproductive capacity, psychologically passes from childhood to adulthood. Journal of Adolescent Health conducted research on pregnancy rates, outcomes of birth and abortion among 15–to 19 years old and 10– to 14–year olds in all countries (Gilda, 2015). The hypotheses of this research is that pregnancy accords in teenage girls between the ages of 10 to 19 years old, 95% of these births occur in low– and middle–income. The research conducted by Journal of Adolescent Health, shows statistics of over 21 counties of pregnancies, abortions, births, and the Pregnancies that end in abortion (%). This Tables show a contrast with females 15–19 years old, and females 10–24 years old, Rate per 1,000 females. The average birth rate among teens in middle–income countries exceeds more than double that of high– income countries, and the share of low–income countries is five times higher. The proportion of births that take place during adolescence stands at around 2% in China, 18% in Latin America and the Caribbean and over 50% in sub–Saharan Africa. Half of all births in ... • 46. Teen Pregnancy Rates Have Reached An All Time High Did you know that today teen pregnancy rates have reached an all–time high in the United States? According to a healthcare organization called, Family Planning Plus, about 750,000 American teenage girls get pregnant annually, to date. In consequence, high schools around the country have taken a decision to step up and take an action in decreasing the rate of teen pregnancy. Becoming a parent permanently and profoundly alters a teenager 's life. Most of the girls forget about their dreams of happy marriage, and become mothers at an early age. College is almost always out of the question, graduating high School becomes a goal most teenage moms do not achieve. Today, there are many types of birth control found in schools across the country; however most parents and administrations are having trouble accepting the distribution of contraception in educational facilities saying that it enables students to have intercourse and is also against religious beliefs. From my point of view, schools should have contraceptive supplements available to young adults and teenagers because it can lower the risk of teenage pregnancy and abortion, prevent sexually transmitted diseases, and help teenagers be comfortable making responsible decisions. According to the article entitled, "Untangling the Health Disparities of Teen Pregnancy," young girls having babies is not new, as a matter of fact, teenage parenthood was higher in the 1950 then it is today, but things were different. The author of the article, Eric Nicholson, is extremely critical of Texas' sexual education program and voices his criticism with heavy use of sarcasm. This September 28, 2015 article was prompted by Texas' recent decision to provide low–income teenagers with access to free birth control. The author praises the decision and is hopeful it will help reduce Texas' high birthrate which "puts Texas in the company of such bastions of progressive public–health policy as Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma." Mr. Nicholson also notes that five Dallas ZIP codes recently received a loan from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help combat teen pregnancy. While he is optimistic that these changes will reduce the teen pregnancy rate, he also points out that "expanding access to contraception and improving education ... are hardly groundbreaking techniques in the fight against unintended pregnancy." For Mr. Nicholson, these are nothing but first steps which should have been taken long ago. He then proceeds to discuss five ways in which Texas can do even more to combat the high teen pregnancy rates in Texas. He first suggests that rather than deferring to parents on matters of sex and HIV education which inevitably means many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. Teen Pregnancy Rates By Jacqueline Sedgwick 's Article,... One major problem in America's society today is teen pregnancy rates. In fact, "teen sexual activity, pregnancy, and childbearing are associated with substantial social, economic, and health costs" (Sedgwick). However, this problem is not one without a solution. The rise of teen pregnancy rates can be prevented and reversed by providing better access to birth control for teens, eliminating the negative connotation that accompanies abstinence, and implementing more efficient sex education in public schools. One solution to preventing teen pregnancy would be to provide better access to birth control for teenagers. In Jacqueline Sedgwick's article, "American Adolescents and Emergency Contraceptive Pill Access," she argues that the American teenage pregnancy and abortion rates are higher than any other nation due to the irregular or improper usage of birth control. Many American teenagers are unaware of how to properly use the contraceptives and mistakenly find themselves in difficult situations, but with more knowledge about birth control, teens will be able to properly protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. According to the article, the federal court order the US Food and Drug Administration to make emergency contraceptive pills available to teens over the age of seventeen without a prescription (Sedgwick). Allowing easy access to birth control will enable teens to be prepared and inhibit them from unintended pregnancies that are likely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teens living in poverty have a greater likelihood of becoming pregnant than teens living in affluent communities. What causes this disparity? Social and environmental factors are in large part responsible for the disparity. The adults in lower– income families are often less educated, have a criminal history, hold low–income jobs, or are unemployed. Lower income communities are plagued by gun violence, gang inhabitance, and the availability of drugs. This trend can be linked to neighborhood income inequality and lower educational opportunity for these demographics ("Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy / Reproductive Health / CDC," 2015). In my Voicethread post I addressed the idea of generational poverty for many families in urban communities across the country. Adolescents and teens that have grandparents and parents that live in poverty are more likely to experience poverty in their adult lives. Low–income families rely on multiple forms of government aid, including food stamps, rent assistance, and other governmental subsidies to decrease their financial burden each month. Cyclic poverty is among the most difficult patterns to overcome. Decreased economic prospects for young girls in urban environments steer them towards teen parenting (Kempner, 2013). Watching their parents 'get by' is enough motivation for vulnerable young women to take the plunge into parenthood. However, parents that seek education and personal betterment often seek safer environments in which to raise their children, breaking the cycle of poverty for their families. The Problem Of Teen Pregnancy Rates Introduction to Nature and Scope of Research In reviewing the literature of multiple studies and reports, I found that there is significantly more data and research in regards to the problem of teen pregnancy and the associated problems that are attributed to adolescent childbearing than there are specific to the effectiveness and efficacy of second chance homes. Second chance homes help teen mothers and their children comply with welfare reform requirements under the 1996 law (Housing and Urban Development, 2016). Second chance homes can also support teen families who are homeless or currently residing in foster care (Housing and Urban Development, 2016). In addition, research has shown that over 60% of teen parents have experienced sexual and physical abuse by household member requiring the need for alternative housing options (Housing and Urban Development, 2016). Assessment of Effectiveness of Current Policy and Limitations of existing Research I would find it hard to say that the second chance home policy is effective simply based on the currently decreasing teen pregnancy rates. Since PRWORA was enacted in 1996, there have been several major policy changes that could also be affecting the decrease in teen pregnancy. Two examples would be the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to extend the constitutional right to privacy to a minor 's decision to obtain contraceptives and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 which gave all insured minors access to free ... Unfortunately, these programs do very little to stop the increasing rates, but now have only pushed teens to continue in their sexual behaviors, along with denying them the tools to properly protect themselves. Even though research has disproven that abstinence–only programs work, comprehensive programs are still not being used in school. This is because there is an ... Even though these two STDs are treatable with antibiotics, for the majority of people who contract these infections do not experience any symptoms and it can go without treatment for many years. If left untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea can leave the person with devastating consequences like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infertility, and other health problems. HIV is another epidemic among adolescents, so much so that young people ages 13 to 24 make up the 1 out of every 4 new HIV infections each year (CDC). Young adults diagnosed with this infectious disease are forced to carry it with them the rest of their lives because as of now it is incurable. HIV is a serious disease that if not treated properly can cause the person to become extremely ill and can even cause death. Herpes is not far behind HIV, with one in every five adolescent and adults become infected and two–thirds of that number are young adults under the age of 25 (Teen Help). This STD is also incurable and secretly lives in the body, leaving the person to only guess when an outbreak will happen. Because "many adolescents underestimate their infection risk and they have mistaken ideas about what protect them from STDs and what does not," (Brückner 277) many do not take the proper precautions necessary to protect themselves. This leaves "[o]ne third of all sexually active young people [to] become infected with an STD by age ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today In 2017 The Rate Of Unplanned Pregnancies Has Decreased Today in 2017 the rate of unplanned pregnancies has decreased significantly from years ago, but currently there is no progress being made. Michigan is also nationally ranked 21 out of 50 states in teen pregnancy rate, this information verifies that some of the current measures that are being taken are working because the numbers are not higher, but there is always room for improvement. Verses if there were not access to these helpful resources or maybe not as easily accessible, people would not think twice abut having unprotected sex because they would know that they don 't have any other options. Every young girl who is sexually active is at risk for teen pregnancy. Children of teen parents are very likely to become teen parents themselves, this shows higher correlation in places of poverty and low income families. Unplanned teen pregnancy is more than just an unexpected expense than to just the parents, it is an expense to society. In America according to the National campaign, each year 9.4 billion dollars in taxpayer money is spent on teenage childbearing assistance. (2016). These costs include many things for both the child and the parents needs as well. The norms, values and beliefs of families also play a large role in the current social issue. Some families who were teen mothers themselves might be more or less educating to their child based on their experience. Also a large factor is that some religions do not believe in birth control or sex before marriage, therefor the parents of the children do not allow them to take contraceptives and then they accidentally get pregnant. At the core of the debate is one unmistakable fact; people really don't have to get pregnant Out–of– wedlock births really are a matter of choice, a lack of foresight, and sheer irresponsibility. There were 614,000 pregnancies among 15– to 19–year–old women in the United States in 2010, or about 57 pregnancies per 1,000 women in that age group, according to a new study by the Guttmacher Institute. That's a 51 percent decline from the peak rate in 1990, and a 15 percent decline from the 2008 rate, when there were about 68 pregnancies per 1,000 women in that age group. • 70. Teenage Pregnancy Rates And The United States Even though teenage pregnancy rates have decreased in the U.S. in recent years, the rates are far behind European countries. Studies have shown that U.S. teenagers have (a) high rates of sexual intercourse at a younger age, (b) high rates of sex without contraceptives, (c) high rates of pregnancy, (d) and high number of multiple sex partners in comparison to European countries like Sweden, France, Netherland (Bell, 2009). One of the main reasons for high rates of teenage pregnancy in the U.S. is the continuation of ineffective abstinence based education (Bell, 2009) and not allowing teenagers to make abortion related decisions. In the U.S. Eighty two percent of the teenage pregnancy is unintended and 37 % of total unintended pregnancies result in abortion. Teenagers choose to abort babies because of shame, staying focused on career, unstable financial status to support babies and not getting emotional and economic support from parents. Twenty two percent of pregnant teenagers choose not to tell their parents (ACLU, 2001). Teen Pregnancy Prevention Intervention (TPPI) was initiated with the objective of reaching teenagers to create awareness and help them make safe sex choices and prevent pregnancy through comprehensive sex education. However, the policy of after school program has hindered in providing effectiveness of sex education because most of the minority students are not able to participate since they have to go to work and help their parents to support their family. ... Since The Rate Of Unwanted Teenage Pregnancies Has Been Since the rate of unwanted teenage pregnancies has been steadily decreasing over the past forty years (Patten, 2016), many young women will not be faced with the difficult challenges and life– altering decisions that a pregnant teen is presented with. Even though global teen birth rates have been steadily decreasing over the years (as seen in figure 1), the birth rate United States still prevails as one of the highest out of all industrialized countries, as one can see in table 1 above (Hamilton, 2012). These include, but are not limited to: a lack of access to contraception, a lack of supportive partners, and a lack of education about contraceptive use (Brazeal, 2015). Teen Pregnancy, Abortion Rates, And Hiv Statistics America is known for being a superpower, and this is absolutely true when it comes to leading the Westernized world in teen pregnancy, abortion rates, and HIV statistics (pink). In 1999, about half of US high school seniors said they'd had sex within three months of the survey taken (pink). 71% of Americans said they'd had sex by the age of 19, and the typical age of first sexual experience was reported to be 17 (purple). According to the Guttmacher Institute, teen sex statistics have been steadily decreasing since the 1980s (purple). Contraceptive use between the ages of 15–19 has increased from 48% in 1982 to 78% between 2006–2010 (purple). Nearly 615,000 teenage women become pregnant on a yearly basis (purple). That is 6% of the teenage population– a record low in 2010. This number was down 51% from 1990's statistics (purple). The states with the lowest teen pregnancy rates were New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Maine (purple). Most of these pregnancies were that of unwed mothers. Women living in poverty are nearly four times more likely to become pregnant than those in better socioeconomic situations (red). Teen fathers were two times as likely to be black than white. • 78. Teen Pregnancy and Graduation Rates Teen pregnancy is surprisingly decreasing over the years. According to Farber, "the most recent studies have shown that there has been a decrease in the rate of pregnancies among all teenagers and among sexually active teenagers (16). Although this issue seems is decreasing this is still a problem faced by many teenage girls today. Each year, 7.5 percent of all 15–19 year old women become pregnant (Maynard 1). Not only does this issue affects the pregnant teen but it also affects the economy. Teen pregnancy affects graduation rates. For instance, once a teen loses their virginity to someone they love and they break up it can cause them to feel that their life is over. There have been reports of teens that have attempted or successfully committed suicide. Sexually active teens are more than twice as likely as virgin teens to be depressed or attempt suicide (Fisanick 48). If a pregnant teen commits suicide, she is not only harming herself, but her baby as well. As a product of the teen committing suicide her life is lost and an innocent baby will never see the world. Setting back the rate of teens having sex can also prevent the spread of STDs among adolescents. Teens involved in sexual restraint are most likely aware of the various diseases. Others that are not tend to be the victims of these countless STDs. The side benefit of abstinence is that there is no chance of contracting STDs (Mucciolo 24). The spread of STDs among teens can put them in danger and lead them to death. As of today 4 in 10 sexually active teen girls have had an STD that can cause infertility and even death (Office of Adolescent Health).
