Emergency Medicine
Emergency Medicine (EM) is a relatively new specialty within
medicine that is expanding at a phenomenal pace throughout
the globe. Within the international community, leaders in
medicine, health economics, public health and government
have recognized the need to develop a system the responds
to acute medical and surgical emergencies. Emergency
Medicine is unique in discipline and an independent specialty
with a body of knowledge and skills to care for training
programs are available at a limited number of institutions,
but an enormous need still exists to train many more
emergency physicians to meet the nation’s large demand for
emergency healthcare providers. The MEM program at Aster
MIMS, Calicut had its beginning in 2007, subsequently similar
programs were started at Aster MIMS, Kottakkal, DM WIMS
Wayanad, Aster Medcity, Cochin and Aster CMI, Bangalore to
meet the growing demand. All these institutions are certified
with NABH Excellence in Emergency Medicine.
Aster DM HEalthcare has recognized the need to train
highly skilled physicians to treat patients presenting with
acute medical conditions. The Ronald Reagan Institute of
Emergency Medicine (RRIEM) at the George Washington
University (USA) have partnered together to collaborate
with the medical faculty at Aster DM HEalthcare to launch a
comprehensive three year Post Graduate Masters Program
in Emergency Medicine. The program will train 30 students
per year, and prepare them to practice in the complex and
challenging arena of emergency medicine at the highest
level. Through an on going presence of faculty from RRIEM
at Aster DM HEalthcare, the students will have continuous
guidance and education in the specific topics and skills that
constitute the field of emergency medicine. The faculty will
provide lecturers, seminars simulations, and clinical teaching
to the trainees. The quality of the education program will be
maintained through continuous assessment of the training
faculty and the overall masters program.
Medical Council of India (MCI)
recognised Emergency Medicine as primary specialty on 21st
July 2009. It is a great step
in the history of Emergency Medicine in India.

The Speciality-World Prospectus
Emergency Medicine (EM) continues to grow internationally in
scope and activity and services an essential role as the safety
net for patients in many countries. In recent years,
urbanization, aging, economic changes and worsening
healthcare problems have led to an increased awareness
and need for emergency care throughout the world. EM has
become more important due to its ability to meet not only the
day to day treatment needs, but also to provide planning the
leadership for disaster preparedness. There are now more
than 30 countries that have recognized EM as a specialty and
many of those countries where it is not yet recognized, are
pursuing such specialty recognition and developing residency
training programs. Many of the countries that are in the
early stages of developing the specialty and their residency
programs are reaching out for guidance from those countries
that have been successful.
Curriculum Implementation
One of the essential components of an effective academic
training program is a solid curriculum plan that provides the
faculty and the residents with the specific criteria for
theoretical and clinical education. At the international level,
The 2003 Model of the Clinical practice of Emergency
Medicine: A 2-Year Update can serve as a valuable resource
for any country that is implementing an EM training program,
and it has already been used to help structure residency pro-
grams in multiple countries such as Turkey, Korea, Singapore,
Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Poland and Iran. The model has also
been translated into Spanish, and academic institutions in
Latin America have been able to use the translated model to
integrate EM training programs alongside traditional training
programs such as surgery and internal medicine by sharing
the translated document with colleagues from other
specialties. Specialty societies such as the American College
of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Emergency
Medicine, and SAEM could support EM-oriented distance
learning projects.
International EM Masters
Masters programs in EM allow EPs to learn a special aspect
of the field in more depth or to quality for a certificate of
added qualification (Subspecialty certificate). International EM
Masters can offer unique opportunities in both education and
research. Specific educational opportunities include
international clinical and administrative experiences for EM
residents, fellows and faculty.
The American College of Emergency Physicians, American
Academy of Emergency Medicine and SAEM potentially could
collaborate with the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency
Directors, International EM Masters Programs, and other
stakeholders to develop standards for international EM
fellowship curriculum.
Post-graduate Masters Program in Emergency Medicine (MEM)
The post-graduate masters program in emergency medicine
at MIMS will consist of a three year curriculum that will be
divided into 36 clinical modules and cover the breadth of
emergency medicine. RRIEM and MIMS will provide faculty
coverage and program supervision for the masters program.
At the successful conclusion of the program, the graduating
doctors will be able to practice independently within
Emergency Department as well-trained physicians, and they
will receive a “Certificate of Completion” from the RRIEM at
George Washington University-Washington DC, USA.
The Course is recognized in more than 30 countries
worldwide. The programme is not recognized by IMC.

  • 3. 4 5 Emergency Medicine Emergency Medicine (EM) is a relatively new specialty within medicine that is expanding at a phenomenal pace throughout the globe. Within the international community, leaders in medicine, health economics, public health and government have recognized the need to develop a system the responds to acute medical and surgical emergencies. Emergency Medicine is unique in discipline and an independent specialty with a body of knowledge and skills to care for training programs are available at a limited number of institutions, but an enormous need still exists to train many more emergency physicians to meet the nation’s large demand for emergency healthcare providers. The MEM program at Aster MIMS, Calicut had its beginning in 2007, subsequently similar programs were started at Aster MIMS, Kottakkal, DM WIMS Wayanad, Aster Medcity, Cochin and Aster CMI, Bangalore to meet the growing demand. All these institutions are certified with NABH Excellence in Emergency Medicine. Aster DM HEalthcare has recognized the need to train highly skilled physicians to treat patients presenting with acute medical conditions. The Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine (RRIEM) at the George Washington University (USA) have partnered together to collaborate with the medical faculty at Aster DM HEalthcare to launch a comprehensive three year Post Graduate Masters Program in Emergency Medicine. Through an on going presence of faculty from RRIEM at Aster DM HEalthcare, the students will have continuous guidance and education in the specific topics and skills that constitute the field of emergency medicine. The faculty will provide lecturers, seminars simulations, and clinical teaching to the trainees. The quality of the education program will be maintained through continuous assessment of the training faculty and the overall masters program. • 4. 6 7 The Speciality-World Prospectus Emergency Medicine (EM) continues to grow internationally in scope and activity and services an essential role as the safety net for patients in many countries. In recent years, urbanization, aging, economic changes and worsening healthcare problems have led to an increased awareness and need for emergency care throughout the world. EM has become more important due to its ability to meet not only the day to day treatment needs, but also to provide planning the leadership for disaster preparedness. There are now more than 30 countries that have recognized EM as a specialty and many of those countries where it is not yet recognized, are pursuing such specialty recognition and developing residency training programs. Many of the countries that are in the early stages of developing the specialty and their residency programs are reaching out for guidance from those countries that have been successful. Curriculum Implementation One of the essential components of an effective academic training program is a solid curriculum plan that provides the faculty and the residents with the specific criteria for theoretical and clinical education. At the international level, The 2003 Model of the Clinical practice of Emergency Medicine: A 2-Year Update can serve as a valuable resource for any country that is implementing an EM training program, and it has already been used to help structure residency pro- grams in multiple countries such as Turkey, Korea, Singapore, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Poland and Iran. The model has also been translated into Spanish, and academic institutions in Latin America have been able to use the translated model to integrate EM training programs alongside traditional training programs such as surgery and internal medicine by sharing the translated document with colleagues from other specialties. Specialty societies such as the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and SAEM could support EM-oriented distance learning projects. International EM Masters Masters programs in EM allow EPs to learn a special aspect of the field in more depth or to quality for a certificate of added qualification (Subspecialty certificate). International EM Masters can offer unique opportunities in both education and research. Specific educational opportunities include international clinical and administrative experiences for EM residents, fellows and faculty. The American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Emergency Medicine and SAEM potentially could collaborate with the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors, International EM Masters Programs, and other stakeholders to develop standards for international EM fellowship curriculum. Post-graduate Masters Program in Emergency Medicine (MEM) The post-graduate masters program in emergency medicine at MIMS will consist of a three year curriculum that will be divided into 36 clinical modules and cover the breadth of emergency medicine. RRIEM and MIMS will provide faculty coverage and program supervision for the masters program. At the successful conclusion of the program, the graduating doctors will be able to practice independently within Emergency Department as well-trained physicians, and they will receive a “Certificate of Completion” from the RRIEM at George Washington University-Washington DC, USA. The Course is recognized in more than 30 countries worldwide. The programme is not recognized by IMC. Placement opportunity: The course offers excellent placement opportunity in India and abroad .
