Vision
“SKUAST-K as Centre of Excellence
for building knowledge based bioeconomy in bio-
resource rich Hill and Mountain state of J&K”
Mission
“Societal Biotechnology
for securing livelihood, food security and clean environment
through sustainable production of food, feed, fibre and energy
in hill and mountain agro-eco system of J & K”
VISION AND MISSION
 To produce Next Generation Leaders
 To help the state to get ready for the technology driven
Biorevolution or Gene Revolution
 To enable us to engineer the animals to grow and reproduce more
efficiently, thus increasing productivity,
 To produce livestock having:
 resistance to disease;
 higher quality nutrients,
 ability to accommodate extreme environments
 to produce biomolecules of value in human and veterinary
medicine.
This is likely to provide solutions to many of the challenges we
face now
WHY HRD PROGRAM
IN ANIMAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
OBJECTIVES OF THE HRD PROGRAM
 HRD in Animal Biotechnology to take up the challenges of
the 21st Century for food and nutritional security through sustainable
farm animal production vis-à-vis poverty alleviation in temperate and
cold arid regions of the country
 Create state-of-art infrastructure for teaching and research
activities in Animal Biotechnology
 Stimulate research activities in Animal Biotechnology
and related areas to address the region specific problems vis-à-vis our
rich animal biodiversity and climate change
 Strive for University-Industry Alliance as an
opportunity for industry sponsorship of research in the long-run,
and in return for technology development and transfer to the private
sector
 Encourage entrepreneurship in biotechnology and related
areas to benefit from one of the fastest growing industry (35% growth
in the last few years) and to contribute to the socio-economic growth of
the state.
 Embryo biotechnology: Multiplication of elite livestock through
reproductive technologies for augmenting livestock productivity
 Functional Genomics:
 Allele mining for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance.
 Milk Genomics: QTL mapping for yield and quality of milk
 Wool Biology: Map genes for pashmina yield & quality
 System biology approach to study:
 Growth , Yield (milk, wool, egg), and adaptability in our livestock species
 Characterization & Conservation of indigenous livestock biodiversity
 Diseases diagnosis: Development molecular diagnostic techniques
 Molecular epidemiology of micro-organisms involved in severe outbreaks
of diseases in animals in the region
 Enzyme technology for improving feed efficiency of livestock and poultry
 Value-addition of animal origin foods using biotechnological approaches.

  • 7.  To produce Next Generation Leaders  To help the state to get ready for the technology driven Biorevolution or Gene Revolution  To enable us to engineer the animals to grow and reproduce more efficiently, thus increasing productivity,  To produce livestock having:  resistance to disease;  higher quality nutrients,  ability to accommodate extreme environments  to produce biomolecules of value in human and veterinary medicine. This is likely to provide solutions to many of the challenges we face now WHY HRD PROGRAM IN ANIMAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
  • 8. OBJECTIVES OF THE HRD PROGRAM  HRD in Animal Biotechnology to take up the challenges of the 21st Century for food and nutritional security through sustainable farm animal production vis-à-vis poverty alleviation in temperate and cold arid regions of the country  Create state-of-art infrastructure for teaching and research activities in Animal Biotechnology  Stimulate research activities in Animal Biotechnology and related areas to address the region specific problems vis-à-vis our rich animal biodiversity and climate change  Strive for University-Industry Alliance as an opportunity for industry sponsorship of research in the long-run, and in return for technology development and transfer to the private sector  Encourage entrepreneurship in biotechnology and related areas to benefit from one of the fastest growing industry (35% growth in the last few years) and to contribute to the socio-economic growth of the state.
