Teachers from the New Tech Network participated in an activity where they worked in groups to create rubrics. Each group started by writing the proficient column of a rubric. They then passed their rubric to another group who added the advanced column. Finally, they passed the rubric again to complete it with the unsatisfactory column. The groups then shared their completed rubrics and discussed lessons learned from the process. Next steps included sharing the rubrics more broadly and potentially compiling them into a draft document for continued discussion.

2. Overview of the Activity Meeting of the Minds brings together subject area teachers from the New Tech Network by region. For the activity, teachers clustered into 3 groups. They began by writing the PROFICIENT or EFFECTIVE* column of the rubric. After 7-10 minutes the rotated rubrics and tried to create the ADVANCED/HIGHLY EFFECTIVE column for another group’s rubric. After 5-7 minutes they switched one last time to complete the UNSATISFACTORY or LESS EFFECTIVE section for the third rubric. We came together as a group and debriefed the process and discussed observations and take-aways. * We changed language after day 1 from the more critical (Unsatisfactory, Advanced to Less Effective, Effective and Highly Effective) Participants uniformly agreed this made for a better activity this in and of itself has some interesting implications…
